Pity the old leather helmet with goggles is no longer up to sensible safety standards. Would look great with the WWI -era aviator’s scarf, might have got you in the news. ~8D
That route alongside fast traffic sounds a bIt hazardous. My first thought was the stronger protection available in road-racing motorcycle wear/garments. They have hard pads included for the spine and more. I have only read descriptions and seen them in race footage, but have no idea of pricing. Probably unreasonable in cost, but worse you might jinx yourself and have that choice tested lol.
The other idea may be workable now, or it might be a few years out as ‘drone’ tech gets better. Thought is to use a drone (or two) with live cam to get or keep situational awareness of imminent traffic, so you could pull over and get off the road in some instances. Not sure AI is good yet at judging BAD DRIVING, so maybe give that a few years too, then you’ll be golden (even more ‘golden’ if you take this idea, including and maybe especially about AI, and bring it on the market$ - I only need a few points on that deal, but would negotiate upward depending on any further (of my) contribution to the project). Here’s to us, possibly new business partners. ~8O 👻😎 $$♥
Edit to add, IMO the most effective - and by far cheapest - miteration for hazardous traffic might be lights/strobes. I’d say go as bright as you can. Maybe combined with some sensor system, like drone vid, or a personal radar/lidar unit, would allow timely use and save battery. Also make you less of a blazing curiosity/freak. Haha. Cheers.

In the hotter weather, the lining of the Jacket, and the Strides, comes out - as they do to go through the Washing Machine...
The outer layer is the main Wind Resistance, and the Plastic "Armour" plates for skidding up the road without getting Gravel-Rash are all in the Outer garments, over one's Shoulders, Back, Elbows & Knees.
At 45 Km/hr there"s a fair bit of Breeze to be either kept out for warmth, or used to evaporate Sweat, and I suppose that Globally there's a big market for protective clothes for wearing on Motorbikes - so if one can afford the Bike it starts to look Pig-headed to be quibbling about getting the best protective Suit, Hat & Gloves available ; and after that one has to wear it all, every time - rather than get covered with Gravel Rash for being in too much of a hurry to get dressed to ride the Bike.
But, d' y' know what ?
It beats the shit out of keeping, feeding, watering, catching, brushing, saddling/ harnessing and paying Vet's Bills on a
Horse which couldn't go to town half as fast as the Bike...!
So, I think I'm winning (?) !
