Reagan may have been stronger than Nixon in the south and west, but he would have been weaker than Nixon in the East and Midwest. • @neecicoleman1690
      @neecicoleman1690 3 года назад +17

      What leads you to believe that Reagan was racist? He knew well that it was a serious issue but he felt that it was most effectively dealt with by legislatures and that wasn't the office he was running for. If he really was racist then why was he the only Governor to send a black person as their personal representative to meetings out of his state? 50 people had the opportunity to do that, and Reagan was the only one to take advantage of the opportunity, which was really more of an advantage for the representative. If you want proof of his belief that racism was most effectively handled by legislation then go watch his debate on Town Meeting of the World with Robert F. Kennedy and read a few of his conversations with Barry Goldwater. The man wasn't racist, and I don't give a rip that he said "monkey" because that's taken out of context.
      In the 40s-70s the term monkey was used to describe someone you didn't like regardless of race. It was in the 90s when it became a racial slur. The two African Ambassadors to the UN were socialist, and God knows that Reagan hated the socialists and communists, so he referred to them as monkeys. The comment about shoes was in reference to the belief that communist and socialist countries had a largely poor population because of unfair, unnecessary and cruel actions by the government. That remark was meant as criticism of the governmental ideology, not the two ambassadors themselves.
