When 9s are selling lower than raw, you might have a junk slab situation.

Junk slabs....... I like that term.
It's just a touch ridiculous that the 80s and early 90s are considered junk wax but if they get sent to psa for a slab and a grade.... poof...... now the worthless card is worth a lot...... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Junk wax and slab era been here for years. Just about every card that’s been massed produced will be not worth as it’s advertised as years go by. This is why everyone should just collect for whatever they like, the value shouldn’t be the focus all the time.

Thank you for doing these updates!!! You get information that is very insightful.
Personally, I prefer raw ungraded cards. I have a limited number graded because of how they display. I have experimented with grading so I can be better assessing raw card values. It is very entertaining watching these grading numbers grow. Slabbed cards take up a lot of space. I am continually surprised at how the grading trend keeps growing. At some point, it has to hit a limit. Not sure when, but I believe it is out there somewhere.

I don't think Beckett is in such a bad place. With next to zero effort they still got 650,000 cards. With proper upgrades to their process, they can easily remain profitable. I agree it's not an overnight fix, but they still have enough of the market to be in the space.

12:59 Visualising the Wemby Prizm phenomenon….
So a 23/24 Prizm Basketball case was 12 boxes with 12 packs of 12 cards = 1,728 cards per case.
From that, imagine just over 23 CASES of 23/24 Prizm Basketball, every pack being opened to reveal that every card in every pack was a Wemby #136, and every card then being graded ! 😮

Anything ultra modern in sports cards unless very scarce shouldn't even be graded tbh. Too many parallels and way too many slabs. Pokemon and TCG at least seem to be doing it right while Fanatics and Panini are printing like it's 1989. Collectors Universe is still the monster because of owning PSA and SGC. I'll keep buying raw cards bc I collect cards not slabs

I dont think it matters about the grading per-say. What matters is the card overproduced? Like Wemby. His cards are going to be useless (mostly) one day b/c there are MILLIONS graded. Also Panini is absolute trash. NOBODY cares about 63 parallels in one set. Those cards are 100% worthless unless it is /10 or fewer and even those wont be that special (imo). The rare cards, #'d RC's, rare inserts, vintage, etc are going to be the cards that are valuable in the long run.
I already started to sell off 75% or more of my collection. I am only keeping 50 or less cards. The rest have to go. I am **this close** to selling almost ALL of my cards and buying gold instead.

I agree with your sentiment! Way too many cards being produced and way, way too many being graded. I started consolidating a few years ago. I collect and am not in this to flip (deal) or invest. I am trying to get down to about 100 to 200 cards that I can easily display and enjoy. I believe the broad market is headed for a price collapse. There aren’t enough collectors to support the volume being produced or graded.

Hey, i only watched the beginning so far and i already just wanted to say i am a Marvel Collector and grader and i grade all PC cards and many others with TAG now. really like their service and the slab is best looking out of all slabs IMO. once more people try them they will get hooked too. only a matter of time. Lots of my friends in marvel are going over to TAG as well for PC. resale is still PSA but i have sold some TAG 10 slabs at the same a PSA slab would do which is great and interesting. They just have to get the tech to grade over 55pt cards. thats the big downfall right now. I cant wait until they grade die cut and over 55pt. Will get really interesting then. Cheers and love the content. happy new year

It’s not a junk slab era. We are in a super duper junk wax era. People are grading the ultra modern trash. They are printing more now than the late 80s early 90s. Ultra modern isn’t going to hold long term value (2018 to present)…. 2014 and before was printed much much less…. Only ultra modern raw goes more than a 9, which makes zero sense (it can only be because ultra modern gems at such a high rate)…

1990's TCG is the first 3 English Pokemon Sets (Base, Jungle, Fossil, Base Set 2), and numerous Japanese Sets. WOTC continued making Pokemon sets until 2003. Also they do grade MTG, and that's Alpha through Mercadian Masques. Foil Urza's Legacy cards have a ridiculous graded premium as they were the first official foils not including test prints, or the Foil Lightning Dragon that was Saga's prerelease card.

    9:32 Interesting stat.
In the ‘TOTAL’ category, basketball cards, thanks to the power of the ‘Wemby & Clark’ effects, went up a massive 56%. That increase pushed them up above Football into the #2 graded sport of the year.

With 20 million cards slabbed….. let’s say that any grading company extracts…. minimum….. $5 profit per card from every card graded.
That would mean that in 2024 alone, $100 Million in pure profits was made by grading companies. And that’s not even counting the upcharge fees PSA would’ve charged. 😮

Grading is a good thing. It authenticates your item, protects and encases it, and makes it liquid to see online (cuz it’s hard to buy the card without it in hand). People need to raise the bar on what SHOULD be graded in my opinion. People are grading too much ultra modern trash and cards that aren’t rare or big money…
