    Alder Lake is a revolution for music producers. It's crazy how much responsive a DAW or a system feels and the amount of overhead removed for the serial and real time nature of audio.

      If you want to remove latency you should disable Hyper-threading in the BIOS for any Intel CPU that supports it. This should make your audio/video work much better.

    She is speaking as if moving threads to other cores is such an easy task. It is not, all the prefeched instructions, all microops has to be trowed away and all cache request will be missed in the beginning. It seem to me that branch predictor will not be so accurate in the beginning of the thread execution.

    • @es-yy2cm
      @es-yy2cm 3 года назад

      That's been a problem since the beginning of concurrent processing, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Also it takes between 1 million and 10 million instructions to retrain the branch predictor. Thats like < 0.25 microseconds @ 4 GHz, and an OS time slice is anywhere from 10 - 100 milliseconds. Also, there are more cores now which means you have to switch threads less, reducing the switching overhead.

    Once the issues with P/E cores are worked out, I would like to see future processors with different mix of P and E, including some with few P and very many E cores. If you want ordinary uses to benefit from multi-core, how about a properly multi-threaded compression (zip/unzip). It should have to implement different strategies for single large files vs. many small files. Recognize and bypass files already in (potentially different) compressed format. Ability to use multiple available drives for source, destination and working space could avoid SSD bathtub effect.
