I Hope you enjoy today's video! I'm really excited to share more about my build process with you all today and hope you find it helpful! What else can I help out with??
I feel like this really helps me since my stepbrothers ask me to build houses and things for them because I’m the all knowledgeable older sister who is the best at Minecraft... and I had built a tower on one of my builds and now I realize that I put to many types of blocks and it’s really flat. Small videos like this I think are fun and give people a better perspective on things. Thank you!
Im the younger brother and my sister wants me to build everything bc i have the most minecraft knowledge (especially survival, she spammclicks her sword even tho i told her multiple times not to do that). I also struggle a lot with towers😂
Please show us how to build and connect roofs to each other! Its a thing I seen a lot of people struggle with including myself and would be great to see!
I find it interesting that as an artist, well not a professional or anything, I’ve noticed things always have a basic shape/silhouette. Like when I sketch a person. I start out with the simple shapes and then detail it, adding more clothes and accessories. I guess my point is it’s kind of what you did with the orange building. You started off with a box like shape and added some more things to make it detailed and look better. So yeah... Idk I just thought I’d mention this.
yeah, pretty much everything's gotta start off with a strong foundation (basic shapes, making sure ratios are correct) before adding all the stuff on top to make it look pretty
I’m an artist too and I left a comment about almost this same thing. Except mine was specifically about painting and values. If the values of something are correct (check it by snapping a pic in grayscale), then it doesn’t matter what kind of crazy colors you put on it. But obvs the better the color scheme is, the better the painting will be overall.
this is definitely what i struggle with the most! i can always figure out a pallette and style but it's so hard for me to come up with the structures and blueprints of a build. thank you so much fwhip, i know these tips will help a ton! :)
Fwhip has really helped me in the last few months by just putting out really cool videos so I can distract myself from 2020. My mental health hasn't been the best, so thank you for making something that I can smile about (:

I do have a building question: whats your process of building city builds (like medieval city style like you did in the survival world)? Furthermore, how do you build houses with purpose, and how does that affect what it looks like/the process (ie. A butcher's house/shop in a city)? I'm looking to build a city myself, and this would be so helpful. Thanks Fwhip, love the videos and I take huge inspiration from you!
This is a very detailed comment, seeing as you put a bit of time into writing it I personally think you should have your question answered. Have a like.
When building a house with a purpose, for myself I try to make sure the building LOOKS like what I'm trying to make without needing a sign on it. For a butcher, instead of needing a hanging sign saying "butcher shop" You could have an area next to it to store some cattle with a big door leading into the building to get them inside.. and plenty of space to get rid of the smells and whatnot.
@@fWhip Wow, thank you! I am endlessly amazed at the stuff you come up with, and most of it comes from common sense and real life solutions, since it's supposed to be somewhat realistic. Thank you for the reply! I'll make sure to do this and apply this type of concept to other builds.

I usually don’t put enough detail in the walls and I find it harder to build big builds like castles and just big houses in general but this has helped me getting the shape of the builds so it’s easier to add more detail

5:50 - I was just thinking that. "Looks like a McDonald's Happy Meal bag!". lol I think it's the tower, but the build reminds me of the nursery rhyme "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe". Certainly a classic storybook style medieval house. One thing I like to do when building attached towers, is build a longer building perpendicular, with a lower connecting roof (To give it more elevation change and interest), and the adjacent building gives another point of interest with the roof sloping in the other direction. Eventually, the center might evolve into some sort of inner courtyard, as if it were owned by a wealthy vineyard grower.
I’m an artist irl. This same “silhouette” principle applies to art as well. When painting something, the most important part is the values (the lights and the darks). Color is amazing, but if your lights and darks are wrong then it will always look off. Similarly, if your values are correct (check it by snapping a pic in grayscale), then it actually doesn’t matter what colors you use. It will still look good. Now if you do this and then use color theory and apply great colors, then you’ve got yourself an incredible piece. So yeah I totally get it that when building the main concern is the actual structure, not the blocks. Thanks for the tips!
I just want to say that your orange example building really looks like the Sauðanes Northern Lighthouse. So even building something with only orange might end up looking kind of realistic haha.
Going back in this game, I'm trying to step away from log cabins because that's the only thing I can do. This is a very good tutorial and a great explanation
I like that you take survival into consideration. So many building tips make for great builds that are nigh impossible to fit the rooms I need for survival inside without cramming them in after the fact and looking mismatched.
My build style is fairly similar to this, but I still got new tips and ideas I didn't think of I especially love my pointed Tower roofs and especially Gothic style ones, and I never thought of that cool trick you did with the ceiling. I've currently been working on trying to improve my interiors (I tend to start a new world with the idea to improve on a different aspect of the game, my last one I practiced and learned terraforming, now I'm learning the secret to good interiors. My biggest issue is finding a balance between not too empty and not too busy, and I feel like I'm slowly improving with it just from taking inspiration from others.

This is really helpful, as a visual artist i should realize by now that if your having trouble with something (like me with building) you just need to simplify it to its most basic form
Highly appreciated for you to sharing the tips! If there's a question that I could ask; it'd be How do you tackle the builds on the hilly terrains? With the hilly terrains, it almost always limit myself to build the buildings around the hills instead of tackling it.

i love it, it would be something I'd see in a medieval movie about witchers, but, i don't see this as being possible in survival, maybe in a multiplayer server of some sort, but in survival, that would be just claustrophobic I'd hate to live in a place like this. there's too much detail and it's hard to move inside, so idk... tho, i love the exterior of it. really. good job man!
being in quarantine has really just made me sure uninspired but this video couldn’t be more perfectly timed! :) thank you fwhip, your videos are the best
As a 2d artist, a lot of this sounds very familiar... Silhouette, rule of threes', use of line and contrast, creating visual interest, triangles. How come I never thought to apply those principles to Minecraft? God tier tips my guy
6:49 oof my eyes confused me so much! lol after staring at that orange house for so long then looking at the other house, made the browns/tans of the wooden house look green to me! That was trippy.
Really interesting to see how others build. I like the outline idea - going to have to give that a try. Also, I definitely don't use creative world enough to try out new builds before going into the main world and then spending time digging up blocks whilst deciding what to use.

I always struggle on planning my building ideas but that video just helped me a lot :) tyvm
Ok I saw another video and mentioned in the comments you were "startling the line" of too much detail but it seems you perfectly understand this concept after the first two minutes. My bad. Tip if anybody is low on inspiration for a silhouette, build an interior floor plan first (build every room's basic box shape, which rooms does that building/house have). Make a random flow (that still has flows) and build a house around those rooms. If you made it sufficiently random you move the rooms around until you get a general house chape.
For me it’s what blocks I want to use. Back in the day it was a lot easier to build some nice stuff you were limited; now I’ll sit there for five minutes and think about which brown I want.
This was a super cool tutorial! I'm also lowkey dying to know what that quartz and prismarine building with the elvish-like roof was on the other side of your test world.
Thank you so much for this video, I have legit been waiting for a video like this from you for so long😩 I have troubles building from my own imagination. This will help me immensely, thank you so much again fWhip!
This may have finally explained those time lapse videos I see where something starts off one color then becomes different. Getting the silhouette down first

Wow! I am always so impressed by your videos! This video really improved my building skills. Thank you, Fwhip! 😊
honestly, this helped to keep me motivated for my big blue castle just because of the tower of the house XD
I feel a bit less hopeless about building after watching this video. A well worth-it subscription
i love it, it would be something I'd see in a medieval movie about witchers, but, i don't see this as being possible in survival, maybe in a multiplayer server of some sort, but in survival, that would be just claustrophobic I'd hate to live in a place like this. there's too much detail and it's hard to move inside, so idk... tho, i love the exterior of it. really. good job man!
3 minutes? A new record lol how did you know I needed help building 😂
being in quarantine has really just made me sure uninspired but this video couldn’t be more perfectly timed! :) thank you fwhip, your videos are the best
Im gonna try this idea of making the shape interesting. Maybe my builds will look better! You definitely earned a sub
As a 2d artist, a lot of this sounds very familiar... Silhouette, rule of threes', use of line and contrast, creating visual interest, triangles.
How come I never thought to apply those principles to Minecraft?
God tier tips my guy
This just goes to show that Minecraft is Infact an artform/hj
This was really helpful and I'm glad to be subscribed
That was literally the best building tutorial for minecraft I have EVER seen!!!! Wow!
6:49 oof my eyes confused me so much! lol after staring at that orange house for so long then looking at the other house, made the browns/tans of the wooden house look green to me! That was trippy.
Thank you very much for this video, you are one of the best builders I have ever seen! Also defining layout helped me immensely with color palette
I feel like the McDonald's happy meal was genuinely unplanned and it caught me off guard so bad.. 🤣🤣🤣 NOW I WANT FRIES
Ha ha :DDDDDDDDDD
Really interesting to see how others build. I like the outline idea - going to have to give that a try. Also, I definitely don't use creative world enough to try out new builds before going into the main world and then spending time digging up blocks whilst deciding what to use.
I always struggle on planning my building ideas but that video just helped me a lot :) tyvm
The most favorite that it show you is a Castle and your hardcore,
I liked your structures though,
You are a God Builder
Ok I saw another video and mentioned in the comments you were "startling the line" of too much detail but it seems you perfectly understand this concept after the first two minutes. My bad.
Tip if anybody is low on inspiration for a silhouette, build an interior floor plan first (build every room's basic box shape, which rooms does that building/house have). Make a random flow (that still has flows) and build a house around those rooms. If you made it sufficiently random you move the rooms around until you get a general house chape.
A Medieval or Fantasy theme is something I didn't know I wanted for so long.
Thanks fWhip, love ur vids❤️
pls do more videos like this. Its so inspirational
Thanks fwhip❤️
That was amazing. You made it look so easy 😅 I’ll definitely be watching this a few times. Thanks for sharing!
I agree with Alley Cat, small videos like this are great, thank you.
dang i just got started watching old videos and the change in voice is just WOW
For me it’s what blocks I want to use. Back in the day it was a lot easier to build some nice stuff you were limited; now I’ll sit there for five minutes and think about which brown I want.
Hi! It's Crafterj273 here! Perfect tips and tricks ..... :)
When I’m building I really like to fill up every single space like if there is a flat wall I will add a shelf or a painting with flowers
Can you do a video explaining how you do your interiors? I think this could become a mini series and it’s very helpful!!
Learnt a lot. Im in 1.17.1 and I made some cool designs with deepslate. Thanks!
I just want to say this honestly helped so much
Currently building a city this is very helpful thanks
these videos are just getting better and better!
This may have finally explained those time lapse videos I see where something starts off one color then becomes different. Getting the silhouette down first
next do a video on how to build in certain terrains and what landscapes to look for for building in survival
Ultimate video! always coming out something new every episode!
