Köszönöm, my friend, for another interesting look at a pretty Ontario town.
The railway bridge was part of Canada's first large scale railway, the Grand Trunk [Grand Tronc] based in Montreal. The portion connecting Toronto to Sarnia (and thus giving access to the rapidly expanding American Midwest) and running through St. Mary's, was completed in 1859. The Grand Trunk Railway was very important in Canadian history, since it united a large portion of Canada and was significant in leading to Canada's Confederation in 1867. The railway expanded into many parts of the United States, and when the Grand Trunk became financially troubled, it was absorbed into the Canadian National Railways system. However, the American parts continued to exist separately. The portion going through St. Mary's had expanded westward into Michigan, where it retained the Grand Trunk name. If you are familiar with the rock music of the 1960s, you might be tickled to know that a very popular rock band from Flint, Michigan was called Grand Funk Railroad --- named after that railway line. They had six platinum and seven gold albums.
