Tractor Sliding Backwards Out of Control on Ice and Snow | Scary!

  • If there's a feeling I don't like getting it's the feeling of my tractor sliding out of control. Add to this the close proximity of a large tree and a building to my sliding tractor and that's a perfect recipe for disaster. With the winter weather hitting hard, I've been left a bit behind in my winter preparation and as a result, haven't gotten to putting on my tire chains on my tractor. Although I didn't think this would be a big issue, as you'll see in the video, it turned into a big issue quite quickly. With a clear demonstration of why these industrial tires on my utility tractor are not ideal candidates for snowy winter weather, I get back into winter preparation mode on today's episode as I install my Trygg tire chains. Check out the rope method I use in which I use my tractor to lift the heavy tire chains into position. With a bit of fine-tuning and some zip ties, I manage to successfully get my tire chains into position. To finish off today's episode I go back to the hill where disaster nearly happened initially and I test out the difference tire chains make. You'll be shocked how different the outcome it. Glad you're all here to watch. Here we go!

    tires like to spin on slippery rocks too and if the rocks are sharp the tires can get cut, so chains can help avoid that situation also.

    when I bought my L2501 Kubota, I thought that I wanted the R4 tires. My dealer told me that for my usage, I wouldn't like them at all. turns out, I think that he was right. He said that I would need to buy chains to plow snow and that they would not perform well in the hills. Especially in wet grass.
    I went with the R1's and have no problems at all. they perform very well on wet grass, off road, and in deep snow. this is my 1st tractor with front wheel assist and I am used to having to throw chains on all of the 2wd tractors that I have had through the years. Even if I were to get stuck, I still have the bucket to push myself out with.

    I chain up all four tires on mine, but like you put it off until it’s too late. It’s a hassle. I like to use bungee cords in an X pattern on the outside of the tire to keep the chains tight. Helps a lot. I don’t bother with the inside. Official chain tensioner‘s are nicer but bungees are cheaper.

    If you remember to drive only in RWD you can put chains in the front to (ATV-style is enough 😉) if you get challenges with the steering. You know that feeling when it goes straight when the road turns and the latch that keeps the breakpadels connected is engaged...
    You talked about tightening the chains. I was teached that on a "normal" rear tyre there should be so much slack that the fist fits between the tyre and the chain. At least when I plow snow at work, the tyres expands so much due to rising temperature that the chain almost ruins the tyres if it's to tight. I have heard of connecting chain-links that break due to the pressure of the tyre.
    The chain (at least the ones we use on the tractors) is hardened, so it snaps instead of stretching. Size and speed is different but I think that the principle is the same.
    I don't think that anyone is perfect, we only have different ways and wievs. Now that you winch and drag more wood, have you thought about putting some extra weight on the front end? Bolt on some iron 💪🏼? Still like your videos. You do what I would like to 👍🏼.

      @@sawingwithsandy I have 2-link ladder chains with Vbars on the front of my JD 2520. They alone make a huge difference in the winter, and especially with loader work. I have R4s on that machine and just the front chains alone allow the machine to get around alot better in the snow. They chew away at the snow in front and leave a rough surface for the rear wheels to better grip on. I also have 2 link regular ladder chains for the rear of that machine, but they are a royal pain to mount, and since i have added the fronts i haven't needed the rears. The studded diamond chains on the 3520 are overkill for most of what I do. But today I had to move some big wood with that machine and I know that without the chains on , it would have been a battle. I will also add that tire tread pattern makes a huge difference for the front diamond chains on the 3520. The tractor came with the newer style galaxy tires that have a curved tread, unlike the traditional angled tread on your tractor and my 2520. I found that no matter what I did, the chains would walk all over the tire and get lop-sided. I found a set of front wheels with Carlisle R4s (traditional angled R4), mounted them, and the chains stay right on the center line of those tires like they should.

    Obvious question would be why did you not just drop the bucket to stop from sliding backwards? Seems to be the most logical thing to do to prevent sliding backwards into a tree that also seems to be your biggest fear.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 года назад

      If things were looking like hitting the tree was imminent then I probably would've done that but I waited as it seemed to be sliding in the right direction and that way I didn't risk bending my tire chains which I was carrying on the grapple.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 года назад

      The backing over idea would work too I think. The only reason I like this way is I can make small adjustments as the tire chain starts onto the tire whereas when I am in reverse the weight of the tractor prevents me from making much adjustment

      @@sawingwithsandy That makes good sense plus those chains aren't exactly light. I only ever used the little garden tractor chains for snow removal equipment. By the way nice job on the equipment shed. And explaining the one nail method so the wood won't split. I paved my driveway after 30 years of it being gravel. Part of it has a fair downhill slope. I thought "this will be GREAT to get the snow off....no more rolling gravel up with the snow".
    So first few inches, I'm out there with the bucket pushing it off. Unfortunately, left a real thin coat on the blacktop, and NO WAY could I get back up the driveway.....ahahahhaaa.....slid all over the place. Scary as heck !. I ended up walking back up to the house, getting a couple buckets of wood ash and taking it back down and scattering out. Barely made it back up then.

    I was really disappointed in seeing your tractor in action on what looks like a very small slope. Are the tires loaded? I have much older 4X4 farm tractor with Ag tires.. I believe they perform much better I have a driveway with a steep slope and never had an issue of needing chains.. Years of plowing and blowing snow.
    This year could be a different story. I recently acquired a (new to me) tractor for blowing snow This one is 4x4 with industrial tires.. (the beauty of this one is heated cab.. older farm tractor above is open station.
    Great job installing the chains, just be careful and pay attention of the location of the valve step.. last thing you want to do is shear it off.
    As always awesome videos, keep it up

    • @profdave2861

      Sandy has said in previous videos that his rear tires are loaded with Rimguard. However, on ice, weight really doesn’t help a tractor much with industrial tires. Chains are a must on a tractor, especially in wet snow conditions where it turns to ice as it packs.

    • @critical-thought
      @critical-thought 2 года назад

      It is worth noting that Sandy was driving on trail that he has shown many times to be wet muskeg and otherwise boggy soil. Under the slightest pressure from a boot or a tire, the snow will sponge up that moisture, turning it into a soft version of black ice that is very slick.

    • @sawingwithsandy

    • @amerritt261

      The buyer should be given the choice. I'm sure you've noticed how fast they go bald. Regardless of the tires, when you're sliding forget about the brake. With the brakes locked you lose your ability to steer.
