I've got an older Express 5:50 combo that I love. Really great tones, highly functional, and built like a freaking tank.
Still got it?
Great Demo! Bought this amp a few months ago and I can only say wonderful things about it! I am extremely impressed with the versatility of this amplifier, it really can cover any tone I could possibly imagine! My favorite sounds come from Channel 1 set on Crunch with a light overdrive which can be cleaned up rolling back the guitar's volume, and Channel 2 set on Burn with the gain in its lower region to get those sweet singing Robben Ford/Larry Carlton style lead tones! Totally recommend it to anyone who like myself wants a great value extremely versatile amplifier! Well done Mesa/Boogie!
How does this do in terms of Marshall blues breaker or plexi style tones? Sounds like it's capable of doing lots of tones!
Christopher Miller Do you still love this amp?
This demo sold me. Best demo and playing for this amp.
This demo sounds way better than the Mesa demo. I was unimpressed until I saw this video. I just may have to go check this amp out. Although I have some serious gas for a RA-100 or an Electradyne. Great video!!
It's a Vox. It's a cool guitar because the pickups can be run as a humbucker, P-90 or a single coil like a Fender. Very versatile.
Yeah, you almost never hear power chords or cowboy chords in professionally produced demos. And it's even rarer to hear the gear demonstrated in a band context. The gear sounds great with a player like Mark noodling around, but how it sounds playing rhythm guitar with a band is the #1 most important thing for me.
When Josie comes home, so good, she's the pride of the neighborhood, she's a raw flame, a live wire, she plays like a roman with her eyes on fire!
No it only takes 6L6 Power Tubes. The amp is built really well and is super versatile. They really improved the clean channel and the overdrive channel was always great.
Just purchased one on the strength of this demo
Mark Lucas is a phenomenal player, but i can never tell if any of the gear he demos would fit me well. The obscure jazz runs, though super impressive sound nothing like what i would play or use this amp for. I find that to be true for all his demos. I will always watch for his talent, but i feel just a bit unsure of if i like the gear or not come the end of the video.
Mark- Thanks so much for this demo. Best I've heard yet. Splendid licks my friend.
Great job on the demo! Your playing was tasteful and your tone was great!
Nice demo and playing. I have the 5:50+ head and play it through an Avatar 2x12 cab...this amp is downright amazing to me. It can do practically anything you need it to do with the 4 modes (2-channels) and EQ. For those out there on the fence about buying this amp: I've compared it to many other high-end amps, including my Marshall JVM 210H, various Dr. Z combos, hand-wired Marshall and Fender copies, the Fender twin/deluxe reverb amps, Divided by 13, etc., none of them are as good as this one, IMO. I sold my Marshall JVM 100W head and 4x12 Marshall cab to get this Mesa.
This guy Mark Lucas is a great player.
Geez lol I wish I would have seen this video before I went through the trouble to do my demo on the Express 5:50 plus this is extremely informative and well done!
Fantastic demo
you're a bad ass!! I'm digging the playing as much as the amp. more more
thanks , I enjoyed the demo . The amp is great of course , it's a mesa Boogie . what guitar are you using for this demo ?
David Scott The Guitar is a Vox SDC-55 model..
I need a new gigging amp after selling my Fender Supersonic Twin and this sounds very good and very versatile. Lots of good clean and overdriven sounds.
Why are you selling the super sonic if you don't mind me asking? I have a supersonic 22 and always feel like I'm on the cusp of looking for something new as well.
The main reason I sold the Supersonic Twin was because it weighed 84 pounds and I no longer felt able to lift it down the stairs in my house, in and out of the back of my car and to wherever I was playing. The reverb was also quite noisy at lower volume levels although this wasn't an issue when playing out of doors with the amp switched to the arena setting and turned up. Apart from that I've been playing in an acoustic duo lately so have less need for an amp like the Supersonic Twin which was very good for playing outdoor events but not suitable for studio use. I think your Supersonic 22 is in a different league from the Supersonic Twin and more suited to home use.
How is the versatility of your new mesa 5:50+?
Good points on the SS twin. The SS22 is heavy enough in itself, so I can't imagine adding more bulk.
The main reason I'm frustrated with the SS22 is that at lower volumes, it really doesn't open up very well. This may just be the speaker, but it sounds very bassy and muddy unless you crank the treble and the bass and mids are at 3' or so.
The Express 5:50 appears to be very versatile, hopefully allowing you to find the sound you want from each guitar and for each song. You can choose between clean/crunch and blues/burn channels. Sliders provide the means to adjust the parameters of the tone in addition to bass, middle and treble etc. This amp also appears to free of background noise so it should be great for playing at home and for recording at low volume levels. so far I have just used it on the 50 watt setting. But in the end we're all different and you should try one for yourself at your local Mesa dealer.
Have the head version thru a lonestar cab pretty cool
What is this guitar? How would this compare to a Fender clean sound?
So he should just play Smoke on the Water over and over, or Stariway to Heaven. - I don't understand what you are asking for- I love it that he doesn't just crank the gain, add 7 pedals and try to knock the speaker out.
Big Ron
Got one, love it!
nice steely dan
Steely Dan at the beginning! FUCKING AWESOME
A question: what mic is this that you are using in front of the amp? Thanks.
Tks, man!
Very good review. Covered it all. Appreciated it.
Hey, Mark. Do you happen to remember what mode you were in for the intro? I tried watching in HQ full-screen, but still couldn't see the LED.
Thanks!
Is there a control on the amp that will function as a MASTER VOLUME that will govern both channels?
No. There is none.
Both channels have seperate eq, gain, volume, reverb and power setting.
The central volume control should come from your guitar or vol pedal. You could mount a volume pedal in the fx loop, that would work. If you have a eq, boost or volume pedal lying around somewhere, that would work. Imo any clean pedal having a volume option would work.
The Boost works on both channels. So if you look for a central vilume boost, thst wiil help a bit.
Have you ever had a chance to try Express 5:25 with 10" speaker? How is your opinion if so? Thanks!
True!
$1149.00 for the head. Any questions let us know or give us a call at 412-828-1003
Nice demo Mark.. Somebody knows the scales?
+Allan Ardon
heres a little friendly and very helpful advice.
i didn't have the resource known as youtube or the internet when i started so your at an advantage
the time you invest in this will make you a better and more competent guitar player able to sit in with any musicians and play well.this can further your progression towards excelling at guitar.
learn and memorize the 5 basic pentatonic scale in all patterns(and keys in A to G)
from the first fret up to the end of the neck.
(this is absolutely necessary to understand soloing over all styles
of music and will give you an awesome guitar vocabulary.)
now that you've mastered this ,research modes and after learning and memorizing them
you will now know aeolian, dorian, mixolydian, phygirian, locrean modes and anything else
and solo over ANYTHING
I have been keeping my eyes on this amp for quite some time now. My issue is the fixed bias. Can you swap the 6l6's for EL34's?
The 5 band EQ part of the Power section or Preamp section?
can you guys do a review on the new marshall dsl series? especially the 40c!
At least the guy can play. 95% of reviewers are not this talented.
Can You please make a video of the Lonestar classic 1x12? Thank You.
Is the riff from 3:38 from anything in particular? Sounds very familiar
James Freeman
Lagrange
How high was the gain set for this video?
How would the Head sound with 2 Celestion V30 speakers?
Great playing, but would it hurt for demo players to play some less..."sophisticated" stuff? I like the lead tones and the cleans that I'm hearing, but unsure if I like the overdriven rhythm sounds. I didn't hear any...not with any intense attack, anyway. It's all done with so much finesse. Many players don't have such feel, and many don't wish to play in such a context. Just a tip for better demos in the future!
how much for the head version in 25 watts ?
Then he isn't doing his job. The only reason Lucas demos these is so that NStuff can sell the gear. I love watching him play, but I have to agree with you.
whay mic are you using?
Each amp has it's own voice and timbre combined with a specific guitar. I'm not trying to over simplify this, but if you truly want a Fender clean, buy one. You can actually purchase a Fender Twin cheaper than a Boogie and have that "Bell" like Fender tone!
Yeahhhh steely dan
Love the playing. However, I wished you had used a guitar that's a little more of a "known quantity" than that Vox.
We sell it all, so we like to video it all... Thanks for checking out the video!
josie :D
nice amp..too bad its too expensive.
5:33
Why don't they make this in 212 anymore? This design just screams for 212 imho.
Buy the top and a 212 Mesa cab to your liking ...
Why you're demoing an amp with a guitar no one's familiar with?
Demo with a Les Paul, SG, Strat, Tele or a 335 for god's sake
This guy is too sophisticated to play blues, lol
