I think it's interesting that while Sana is one of the least fluent English speakers in the group, her pronunciation of English lines in Twice songs is one of most natural sounding.
I love her verse "a whole new world" in the song got the thrills.

That’s like Miyeon. Soyeon, Yuqi and Minnie all speak far better English but only Minnie’s English lines ever sound cleaner/more natural.

As we all know, Sana is already bilingual.
In fact, when she first came to Korea, she didn't even speak a word of Korean. She didn't even know the simple greetings!
If you speak Korean, and have ever watched "SIXTEEN" series, you can see that her fluency in Korean in the first and last episodes had improved dramatically.
That's how much Sana has tried, but she's never expressed that she has made.
And she has the best Korean speaking skills among the three Japanese members.
Most Koreans can hardly notice that she is Japanese when they close their eyes and only hear her voice. It's almost impossible at the moment.
Just as English is a difficult language for Japanese and Koreans, Japanese and Korean are difficult languages for English speakers.
Word orders, sentence structures, ideas of idioms, etc.. Everything is a completely different language.
And TWICE is still one of the busiest idol groups in the world.
Even if Sana really wants to learn English, it will take a lot of time.
I hope she doesn't feel ashamed of herself.
I agree. I also think that her tutor was wrong to demand from her to only speak English with her. If she has zero English skills, how is she supposed to speak in English only for a whole hour? Proper tutoring from the ground up requires gradual use of the language you are learning, not immediate.

Yes, absolutely right. Anyone who wants to learn a foreign language needs a minimum of basic skills.
I believe that Sana's case was caused by a misjudgment of the agency, not by herself or the teacher's fault.
i personally think Mina has the better Korean language skills, but she's leaps and bounds quieter than Sana
as someone who can speak both japanese and english the two languages are extremely different and hard to learn!

heartwarming to see that even her voice and laughing alone makes me smile and makes my heart flutter. It's like a phone call with her. She's so endearing that it's confirming me every day why she is my bias. I love her to death and would never blame her for not learning English 🥺 she already speaks 2 languages fluently since a very young age, which a lot of people in the world can't even brag about! I hope the Twice members aren't so hard of themselves. For having seen their progression in the last years, and attended their concert in 2022, I feel like Mina, Dahyun, Tzuyu and Chaeyoung have improved their speaking and understanding so much. That's gold already!

Omg...Sana speaking English made my day. Tzuyu, Chaeyoung and Nayeon can speak some English, right?
Chae, Tzuyu, Nayeon and Mina can speak a bit of English. They’re not super fluent and most of the time they practice or read their answers for interviews, but they’re the most fluent in the group. You can notice a big improvement when you compare the most recent interviews with older videos, so I think they’re taking lessons.
Edit: Now that I remember Tzuyu did confirm in a recent interview they’re taking lessons
All members take English lessons. Another confirmation from a previous concert in the US when Jeongyeon mentioned she would like to apologize to their English teacher as she did her ending speech in Korean and not in English.
Nayeon, Mina, Dahyun, Chae and Tzuyu have improved a lot in English. They had recent US interviews where they spoke in English. Nayeon probably has the better accent of all, look for videos of Nayeon saying 'I Agree' in an American accent
Mina, from her background, is the person with the best understanding of English.
But Tzuyu is impressive it's the fourth (or fifth?) language she dedicates herself to learning

I'm just so proud of these ladies for their hard work. As long as they could understand the main points of the message, I wouldn't mind that they don't speak it. Imo it should be a two-way understanding and communicating. It should also be up to fans to learn to understand the girls' language.

I'm proud that she's putting in the work to learn the language along with the rest of the other members.
Korean and Japanese are difficult languages to learn for us English speakers, and vice versa. So her and the other members struggling to learn the language is understandable but yet give me even more of a reason to admire her and her commitment to keep going

i'll get english major just to teach her for free. 1:40 dont feel embarrassed not being able to speak english, not every human can speak and learn english that easily. instead put interest on it like reading book its the basic way to learn it took time but thats the thing to learn. ill just share my experience how i learn english, its simple internet is full of english if i cannot understand word im reading of course i use google to explain it to me. im in the internet everyday soo i learned alot. Soo sana dont feel bad about it, its ok. lab u.2:40 ohhhhhhhh thats why. the teacher is soo wrong about that. HOW THE HELL A BEGINNER CAN TALK ENGLISH WHEN SHE LITERARY THERE TO LEARN!
That was my point as well. BEGINNER level does not include FULL IMMERSION that only lasts one hour. That was SO dumb of that teacher. They need to be reviewed for that stupid method.

Full immersion is the best way to learn any language -- it's how she learned Korean, granted she was around it 24/7 which makes a HUGE difference -- but for short tutoring sessions you need to already have the basics down and they sent Sana in with next to zero skills. No wonder it didn't work. That method would be more effective with the better skilled (and less social) members like Mina or Tzuyu.

sana is so adorable! it’s really hard to learn and retain a language when you aren’t actively using it to communicate every day. but her english is a lot better than my korean! haha ❤ i think if she had the opportunity to learn and practice english everyday that she would learn very quickly, since she’s so smart.
They say English speakers have a harder time grasping Asian languages, and the reverse is true for Asian speakers learning English. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I guess the rules are completely opposite and it takes time to wrap your head around it. Plus English is renown for having rules that contradict itself, as well as having multiple words sound the same but mean different things. I know all Asian languages are different and have their challenges to learn, but if a lot of them operate under similar rules then it would be easier for Asians from another culture to pick up on a new one, right?I don't know, maybe I'm talking out my ass.
I think for Sana in particular, learning English might be easier if she did something like a Rosetta Stone course along with Jihyo, Dahyun, or someone she enjoys spending time with. It would turn it into something more fun rather than a seemingly impossible challenge. Plus, if it's a TWICE member, JYPE will have two learning the language. For what they need to know, just being able to understand what's being said to them, and to be able to say what they want is enough. They don't need to be an expert, or some literary professor.
Lastly, it might also be easier for the foreign members to learn a new language over the Koreans given they their brains are already trained to switch up languages. That said, during the TWICE tours I noticed that Dahyun seemed to be understanding and being able to respond quicker over some of the others. I think Nayeon showed some promise to. Mina has a heads up on already knowing very basic English, but I haven't seen her advance much from where she was years ago. I actually think Dahyun is more passionate about learning it over Mina, lol. In interviews, I noticed that Jihyo is good at faking English (in that she can read it well), but whether she understands what she's saying I'm not sure. The Set Me Free promotion saw Chaeyoung and Tzuyu trying to speak more English as well, though I feel they were like Jihyo and were more memorizing words rather than learning.
It's crazy to think that TWICE has three languages covered, but are missing English - yet they've hit it big in the West. It must be ironic for JYP, who's always wanted international-speakers in groups ever since the failed Wonder Girls push in America. Chinese and Japanese normally would be enough, but I suppose no one could predict that America was the next big market back when SIXTEEN was in production. Maybe (back then) they thought Mina's level was enough?

Don't bother to listen to any lazy illiterate jerks who love to be ignorant and yell "TL;DR!!!" They will call names and all of that, just proving their ignorance and making it clear what narcissists they are, thinking that only they count as people.
The teacher's way to teach may seem cruel or useless, but it's the best way to get students actively speaking. They should definitely accept their Korean responses, help them translate them to English and then repeat them

Poor Sana, she had a bad teacher. That's not the way to teach a language. It's about the student's needs, and if she needed the teacher to speak in the language that she knew the teacher should has given her that opportunity. Many language teachers think that the only language that should be spoken in class should be the language they are teaching, but there are students who do not learn that way, so teachers must understand that it is not wrong to use the student's mother tongue, or other language that they are familiar with.
I totally agree. She is a genius in language. The teacher should teach the way that fits Sana best. It is the teacher's responsibility to break down the challenges and problems of the student and find ways for student to overcome their specific problems. There is no generic way to learn a language that works for everyone.
Sana can give me list of only 10 words she knows in English and yet I will still find a way to tell her how much I love her a million different ways

She’s not that good but she’s getting there. If she gets a good teacher, she might be able to speak fluent english in just a couple of months. You can hear that unlike other idols, her english has a clear accent and you can understand it well, she just needs to widen her vocabulary.

Yeah, In reflection, that teaching style might have ruined Sana. Sana said she didn't even know basic English then. As we age, there only a short period during development that we can absorb information fast, Sana used that in learning Korean at the time so. Still, she can still started again Now, 5 years later, she'll be fluent. There a bunch of free and helpful courses on RUclips, it could be done with some dedication and effort.

Something I've always admired about Twice as a whole is that they put the Work in. They've worked on their "weaknesses".
At first they were admonished for their "simple dances", BOOM a few years later and they're hailed for their formation.
At first they were critizised for "always lip-syncing", BOOM even in 2018 they sang with live mics in their Concerts.
Really the only thing people can say is an obvious "weakness" for them now is that their English is lacking. But considering their work ethic, I wouldn't be surprised if at least a couple of members start feeling comfortable with Only English interviews fairly soon.
Nayeon already has pretty good pronouncation, so I don't think we should demand that Sana (for example) should learn a 3rd language. I really think that Twice will prove that they're a group that overcomes weaknesses by practice practice practice.

As a Korean and English speaker, I swear her English is in Korean accent. While it’s true Korean people and Japanese people have somewhat similar accents speaking English… being around Koreans struggling to speak English my whole life, I wouldn’t be able to tell she’s Japanese if she spoke to me in English.
At 26, it's MUCH more difficult to learn a new(-ish) language than at 16 or, ideally, 6, but it isn't impossible. The main issue is it takes more dedication and concentration. Twice simply isn't given the _time_ for that. They need 6+ months.
Sana's English tutor wasn't "bad", just WAY above her level + not her style -- would've been a better fit for Mina or Tzuyu.
Stupid how people keep telling their idols to speak in their language rather than learning theirs.
I don't see the point of the teacher speaking only English to someone who's just a beginner. You need to have some sort of basics before you do that. That's like me knowing zero Korean and trying to learn by watching a Korean show with no subtitles.
