I met Haystacks Calhoun here in the late 1960's when he wrestled here in Missouri he wrestle Harley Race that night . I still have his autograph, he was a very nice man always had time to sign autographs.
Great video HAYSTACKS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES GROWING UP IN THE 60'S AND 70'S! SAW HIM MANY TIMES WITH MY DAD AT THE JFK COLISEUM IN MANCHESTER N.H. GREAT MEMORIES OF TIME SPENT WITH MY DAD! I THINK YOU WILL FIND HAYSTACKS WAS AROUND THE 6'4" IN HEIGHT! TO ME STILL ONE OF THE TOP BIG MEN THAT EVER GRACED THE SQUARED CIRCLE!
This gentle giant was the 1st to introduce me to wrestling. If there was entrance music to wrestlers back then, then this would be his theme. Thanks for the upload
Haystacks Calhoun is most definitely one of the greatest big men in the WWE and he should be #1 big man in the wwe. R.I.P the 600lb country boy big haystacks Calhoun. R.I.P
I was a teenager in Australia in the early 70's and used to go to to watch this wrestling. Other stars of that time...Tiger Singh,Haystacks Calhoun ~ great entertainment.Haystacks had a bet that Bulldog Brower couldn't slam him.BB threw a bag of flour in his face and then did pick him up and slam him ~ great strength!
My grandmother loved watching haystacks because everybody loved him and he was a great wrestler he was funny but she liked watching him entertain the fans R.I.P to the 600lb country boy haystacks Calhoun.
HE WAS MY COUSIN. HAD A DISABLED DAUGHTER. MISS HIM AND MY UNCLE ( HIS DAD) HE WAS A GRADUATE OF TEXAS A&M. JOURNALISM DEGREE AS HE GOT A SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP TO PLAY FOOTBALL. HE CREATED TOO MANY INJURYS.
it's 'Haystack' not 'Haystacks'. William appeared on an Art Linkletter show in the 1950's and lifted a bundle of hay and then called himself 'Haystack'
I think Promoters exaggerated Calhoun's true weight (like most sports do). He appears to have been in the 450-500 pound range most of his career. If you look at his girth compared to other behemoths like King Kong Bundy, Plow Boy Frazier ( Uncle Elmer), Earthquake, Vader, Viscera, Henry etc, his weight looks more in line with these wrestlers which is 400-500 pounds... Happy Humphrey by all accounts looked to truly be in the 600-700 range....
Okay the pro wrestling industry for decades has said that Haystack Calhoun was 6 foot 10, and 630lbs, but there is a picture of him with the legendary Bobo Brazil who is 6 foot 6 and haystack is alot shorter even barefoot....hmm I'm sure he isn't really 6 foot 10. But hey, he was an attraction for pro wrestling so they have to make him into a oddity or a imposing monster, so they embellished his height. But he was legitimately over 600lbs I believe. He was in no means at all a great wrestler who can put on wrestling clinic, he wasn't supposed to be, he was a huge draw in the 1960s and 1970s, and a attraction, pro wrestling has always needed there Attractions. He was a huge draw during his time and put butts in the seats, loved and respected by his peers. That's all you need and he made a name for himself and got in the ring with some of the greatest and became a icon and legend in pro wrestling. One the most legendary Big men in pro wrestling history. My He RIP 1934-1989. Just to let everyone know, there was a legit giant of a man who resembled Haystack Calhoun in WCW called or named "Giant Haystack" who was legitimately 6 foot 10 and 640lbs, who sadly died young and born in 1947 and died in 1998....just some references because people get confuced between to the two.
