Is there historical evidence that the cross cut was intended as a sign of the cross?

Yes, there is but not as cross understood as typical + but rather as x.
I studied the subject and there was some traces in polish- german dictionaries from around XVII century. I needed to look into foreign materials due to the fact that there's almost no literature revolving around fencing in polish from that period and plenty in germanya. Germans were always interested in polish saber fencing techniques and some evidences survived there.
