  • After I got my Siglent SDS2104X+ all fully upgraded I had some fun trying to find a cost friendly probing solution that maximized the BW and would work effectively at those higher frequencies. In this video I look at what I came up with and why. The same thing can be done for any scope that can't directly take active probes.

There are quite a few DIY differential/active probe tutorials on youtube. An interesting project might be to construct your own and see how much it can compare to 2nd hand pro equipment.

That would be interesting. Especially to see if you could get both low capacitance and high BW.

How did you do the upgrade? Did you buy the upgrades from Siglent or did you find a "different solution"? 😉 As I have this scope on my short list, I am curious ☺

I found a different solution over on the EEVBLOG forum.

@uni-byte by the way Siglent 2104x+ is on the way. It should be 200MHz out of the box. 😀

@@ernestb.2377 Awesome! I guess you got the free BW upgrade? It actually makes it more like a 300MHz scope.

@@uni-byte I got the scope an hour ago and I can just tell I am really impressed. The unit feels just very good build. The UI is very intuitive for me. I can find everything very quickly without reading the user manual. Of course, maybe when I start to use some complicated functions I well need to look things up, but so far very good. I had to generate the key on Siglent site to activate the 200MHz BW. That was very easy to do. I could test it with DIY test pulse that I measure now at about 2ns rise time, and before the activation at about 2.4ns. But this is more limit of my test pulse then the scope (I am quite sure), as I have used the 74AC14 quite primitive circuit. One more thing I am a bit unsure about. When I took of the screen protection, there is one more film protection on the screen. I see a few very small air bubbles under it (when the scope is off). Would it be smart to keep that one, as I will be using the touch screen, to protect the screen. Or maybe on the long run the "glue" used could give some unwanted residue..??? In anyway one happy camper over here 🙂 Very very beautiful machine. 🤩🤩

@@ernestb.2377 That protection film is for protection during shipping, not during use. I would remove it otherwise the touch function might not work well. It's a great scope and it will serve you well. There is also a key generator available to run on python that will generate valid keys to enable all the options, even BW up to 500MHz. GO over to the EEVBLOG forum. Yuo can find it there.

The Siglent site shows (8/1/2023) that the 350 Mhz scope was supposed to come with the SP2035A probes (350Mhz). Seems like they shipped you the wrong probes.

Mine started life as a SDS2104X-P which is only a 100MHz licensed scope. I have since installed the licenses to get it up to 500MHz for 2 channels and 350MHz on all four. SO the 200MHz probes it came with were correct for what I originally bought.
