Absolutely. I never understood this oversight. And Streep should have won. I think that Streep would not be the first person who came to mind for this role and she was just perfect.
I love what Carrie Fisher says about this scene: First, that contrary to popular belief she and her mother never had sing offs at parties, because "My mother would bury me." Second, Liza Minnelli called Carrie to say that this WAS her life with her mother growing up.
You should watch Bright Lights. There is actual footage of Carrie being called up on stage by Debbie when she was fifteen to sing. It happened. No mistake.
@@llewmills6406 But it wasn't a Sing off. I love Bright Lights and have seen it many times. I think her point was that they weren't quite this competitive.
Shirley MacLaine is my favorite in this film. Meryl Streep was fantastic as always. Superb actor. However my heart goes to Shirley with just about anything she touches. Absolutely adore her. And this performance of I'm still here is the best version of them all!!
The song reminds of us all of how we manage to overcome all the stuff life throws at us. I am older now and I understand what the song means. To make it through the tough stuff and be strong about it. Shirley Thanks for the great song about never giving up and hanging in there.
That's what happens when she walks over and cradles "Carrie's" (Meryl) face and says she "got through all last year"...it's an epiphany, a revelation, and you can see the the power of it in Carrie's (Meryl's) face.
Scott Frankel, the young pianist here, has had an amazing Broadway career. Most recently he wrote the music for "Grey Gardens," which was nominated for ten and won three Tony Awards.
I love the songs from "Follies", and "I'm Still Here" is my favorite of all. I actually first hear Shirley MacLaine sing it in "Postcards from the Edge" and it stuck in my mind, which is how I discovered "Follies". This is really a great number for career actress/singers "of that certain age" that have proved to be survivors of Broadway and Hollywood to put their own life experiences into their performance, which has led so some really stellar performances. But I continue to return to this Performance again and again, MacLaine was just perfection in her performance.
Shirley MacLaine is such a talented lady! She should've won the Academy Award in the supporting category for her hilarous performance in this movie. I can't believe she was snubbed. The scene in the hospital is hilarous as well.
See was brilliant in this.... I love when she sings this.... and when she tells Meryl.... "IT TWIRLED UP" .... LOL I LOVE THIS MOVIE.... thanks for putting this clip on here... It makes me smile every time I watch it
I took this performance for granted when I first saw it. Now, years and many other versions later, I have to say it's the best of this song i've ever seen. The vocals aren't always spot-on, but the emotional range, the movement, the life she brings is unbeatable.
I will forever remember how Debbie Reynolds died from pure sadness and pain the very next day after her daughter Carrie Fisher died. I cried my eyes out and I still do every time I think about them. Rest in peace, Kathy Selden and princess Leia Organa!
Shirley really owned this number in the movie (and it's a hell of a number to own :) ) Makes you wonder - wouldn't it be gravy if Debbie Reynolds sang it one day?
She gives it her own spin, and it's terriffic, but I still prefer Elaine Stritch on the Sondheim 80th Birthday concert. I've seen it sung by so many different people including Dolores Gray and Eartha Kitt, and it's amazing how what is essentially a repetitive, almost patter, song can be done so differently.
What a performance and what a timely exit Debbie,to be with Carrie your lovely troubled daughter. Love and Peace to the family and fans..So so sad. But I hope you are both in the great gig in the sky, singing and dancing and having a happy time now in a galaxy far, far away......
@jjj29871 - Scott Frankel is playing the piano. Sixteen or so years after this film, he wrote the music for the musical GREY GARDENS. GG was nominated for Ten TONY Awards and won three of them. There's another great YT video with Scott accompanying Donna Murphy in "Hit Me With a Hot Note".
Even though this may or may not be about Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds life. I think they sure did love each other and they came to terms with that and that is what makes it wonderful.
Shirley MacLaine great in this movie. For those of us who know some of the inside stuff: Shirley's role was based loosely on Debbie Reynolds, and Ms Streep's loosely on Carrie Fisher.. Mike Nichols directed he great cast. The House used for the sets is the home of Connie Stevens who was Ms. Fisher's former Stepmother. Connie wanted to star as Honey in Virginia Woolf but Nichols would not even let Her. Connie charged a Queens Ransom for Nichols to use Her House. Ah revenge is sweet.
I love backstory & behind the scenes stuff! Thank you! By the way, the house was originally built in the 1930s for Sonja Henie! It is also rumored to be haunted!
Nichols' 1st movie, he was hired by the Burtons based on his stage success, he was NOT the 1 calling the shots & movie$ not only pay big $$$ for locations they totally restage them for filming, lights, sound, etc. Name 1 role Steven's ir remembered for, she is totally inadequate & miscast in Mr. Jericho, to name the ONLY 1 I can recall, just as she was WRONG for Wolfe.
I didn't remember how like Debbie Reynolds she looked.... great performance saw her one woman show in London must be 20 years ago or more... and she was fantastic....
I love Shirley’s presentation of this song with Bob Fosse moves. Great performance!! 🎬❤️🎬
Shirley should have gotten a Best Supporting Actress Oscar® nomination for that performance. It is definitely one of her best. Agreed?
Bobby Rivers Agreed Hands down man.
Absolutely. I never understood this oversight. And Streep should have won. I think that Streep would not be the first person who came to mind for this role and she was just perfect.
She was campaigned in lead and it led to vote splits with Meryl
She is extremely talented! Triple threat, indeed!
@@richardmayora5310 no way against Kathy Bates !

@@ADDrecords Mike Nichols was the one that really pushed her to add more scenes with Doris for the movie. Carrie addresses that in the DVD commentary
The book is much more about her relationship with drugs. They pushed the mother daughter narrative more for the film.
Now that I am over 50 and have a better appreciation, I think Shirley is drop dead gorgeous.
The legendary Shirley Maclaine, one of rare singing performances, absolutely Brilliant!!!
Here in 2023 just to listen again!!😊
MacLaine was discovered in a Broadway musical & 🌟ed in multiple film musicals.
I love Shirley MacLaine in this but the best part, for me, is seeing how Meryl Streep's character reacts to her mother's performance. BEST.
Postcards From The Edge is an incredible movie. Meryl Streep’s closing number is so much fun!!
Shirley MacLaine is my favorite in this film. Meryl Streep was fantastic as always. Superb actor. However my heart goes to Shirley with just about anything she touches. Absolutely adore her.

The look on Meryl's face at 2:47 sums up their entire complicated relationship as mother and daughter. Simply brilliant.
I love Shirley singing from 2:44 to 2:50
Yep. Meryl can communicate so much with just nuanced expression. It's an amazing display of acting instinct.
@@rr7firefly how about the soul-soaring tone of Shirley ?
@@screenactorsguilable Yep. She's good. She transcends her limitations brilliantly.
Same with the look she gives right as the song starts. Gutwrenching, I think….

A brilliant scene in cinema history!!! Both Meryl and Shirley are absolutely perfect.

Thank you Steve, for changing the lyrics to support the movie.
I was wondering if they’d done that. I’ve heard the original song and there are maybe a handful of lines that are in both versions.
He definitely created lyrics for the movie. He put them in his book, Finishing the Hat.
He rewrote for Streisand & Rigg.
My very favorite Shirley McLaine Song. It gets no better than this.
One of the best movies I ever saw. The book was great too. Shirley should have gotten an award.
What a HELL of a performance! You go, MacLaine!
And Meryl Streep looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL here, as always.
Best rendition of the song! MacLaine and Streep are legends!
Check out Elaine Strich before you declare Shirley’s version “the best”. I say she finishes a strong second place!
This gives me LIFE!
A STUNNING WINNER,TODAY,TOMMOROW & FOREVER!!!!

"Lord knows at least I was there, and I'm here!" Gotta love MacLaine & Sondheim.
