I think more historians should mention, when talking about the Parthenon, it didn't just fall apart on its own or from weather or age, it literally EXPLODED. In the 1600s the Ottoman empire controlled Greece and used the acropolis as a fort, and stored gunpowder in the Parthenon. When Venetian attackers shot a cannon ball at it the explosion blew the roof off. The fact that it's still standing at all is incredible.
"Friends, Greeks, wayfarers ; In these times of discord fear is rampant in our society. I contend that the flipside of fear is understanding and those that travel will reap great understanding by meeting people who find other truths to be self evident and God given." Nice speech Rick. Short and Sweet and on brand. 😊🍿👍
That was a great speech Rick. I love your show. I am about to get my passport. And I plan on doing lots of traveling to Europe over the next several years. Your show is very insightful and entertaining.
Good for you! I don't know how old you are, but my international travels began at 17. My bestie and I shared the cost of camping equipment, bought backpacks, Youth Hostel passes, passports, and tickets on Pan Am, and hit the road. Don't forget Euro rail passes. And if you're young enough, ask for student fares for everything. Had a blast! I ended up settling in Norway for years, and kept traveling. Have fun🇺🇲🇧🇻🤗
I am from San Diego, California 🤙 San Diego feels more like a laid back Mediterranean vibe ⛪ And it is nothing like LA. The dry, Greek landscape looks so similar to ours... especially in east San Diego 🌲🔥
One thing that makes me sad is just how small the islands of Greece are. I really wish they were much larger. In the video where you climbed to the top of the hill to view all the islands around, I would never have done that because I prefer to be immersed in something, the mystery of it all. Just as some would love to have a home on top of a mountain, I would prefer to be nestled in a valley surrounding by trees and other things.
Hello Rick Steves, I’d like to ask you questions about traveling on ocean coast by coast. Do you know of anyone who has sensitive to smell chemicals and fragrances and find travel on boat any helpful? I’m at point where I run out of all resources.
2:35 What I find interesting is that when Rick is on the island and as the camera pans in a 360 direction there isn't a tree in sight. That would help explain on why all those relics/homes that they walk through look mainly built of random stones fit into position. I'm just trying to figure out how they were cooking anything and all that if there wasn't a tree or wood for miles in all directions.
The much larger islands of Tinos and Mikonos are very few miles across the water, and both have adequate tree cover for supplying cooking fires. The ancient Greeks would have thought nothing of running supplies to Delos.
Cushions, blankets or pillows for "seats" ?? I don't know, I'm answering as if I had to find a way to be comfortable. It's possible the stones benches had a smooth, polished finish way back then. Not bumpy or coarse from weather and time, that would surely feel more luxurious. That was a thought provoking question. Thank you. 😃💐👍

United Against The Rest Of The World?! What type of barbaric culture is that? She has no idea what Hellenic Culture is at all, only what she was told in a book. I love you Rick.

I am in love with Greek culture ❤️❤️❤️
Me too! I love old ruins. When I did my tour of Europe I went to Rome and never made it to Greece. This video is showing me how much I missed
Those acoustics!! Loved Ricks little speech there. Sounded familiar. NT?

Love Rick Steves. Would like to see more of his shows on t.v. - where are they???
CreateTV or he has hours upon hours on RUclips
His show airs on public television, like PBS. Otherwise you can find most shows on RUclips or his website. I believe even Amazon has several seasons.
@@chewie1644 Yes, we followed him there for years. He's terrific.
Well, the '' pandemic '' put a huge stopper for that.
He has talked about it several times 🙂

I also suggest visiting the most ancient city of Damascus Syria 🇸🇾

Love from Nairobi,Kenya
Me every time I see a new Rick Steve's video over 10 minutes 😀

How could they have EVER lived as comfortably as the movies show - in all that cement and stone! LOL!

Thanks God for the Thacians! :)
Surely Rick would have been the Greek God of Travel in ancient times
IT MUST BE RECONSTRUTED
Anyone here after AC odyssey?
Please respect historical sights no graffiti, touching, and trash.
GŌETHE SAID ONCE :
IT shoud be restaured
It's pronounced "Dee-los" not Delos.
Greeks are so badass the romans wanted to be them so bad. Ahahahah❤ that says alot
They are called: “ancient relics “, or “ “monuments “, by mist of the people, instead of : ruins!!!

The last thing an American is going to do is drink water that doesn't come out of a plastic bottle. Even in Delos. TASTE the ancient world? Nooope.😁
Ya gotta buy some decent shirts Steve
Tuxedo too.
The Acropolis was quite disappointing when I was there a few years ago.
why? 🤔
Del-fee. I like your videos but your pronunciation of locations has embarrassed me a few times.
