      It's also an allegory for depression. She had depression and other mental issues her whole life. The most horrible thing that haunts someone with depression their whole life is the thought of what could happen if it overtakes you. The person your most scared of is yourself and what you may do in the future if you can't control it or keep it at bay.

    Another of the myriad motifs in the series is the "Fixing" motif or theme. Hugh and Olivia are fixing the house. Steven is fixing people's haunting/ghost trauma by providing rational explanations for what they've experienced, even though he's wrong about it. Shirley is fixing the dead and helping grieving families heal. Theo is fixing children. Luke is trying to fix himself. Nell is trying to fix the family as is her father.

    What I haven't seen ANYONE put together is that her sleep paralysis was a sign of her demise as well because it's showing us that she also most likely didn't die immediately. Hangings can take time and, when "done incorrectly" (for lack of a better term) by falling suddenly like it shows, it is possible to essentially decapitate the head from the neck while still breathing, but losing all feeling and control over the body. It's such a phenomenal way to showcase how depression and suicidal ideation is in a way haunting one's self. Knowing Nell suffered the most undeserved horror, was more cruel-y goaded into giving the house what it wanted by making her see what she wanted (even if it seemed a kindness at first), and ended it that way is the surest tragedy in this story as it is for so many others in real life. This will always be my favorite Mike Flanagan creation and I hope he and more creators continue to make authentic and amazing interpretations of work like Hill House.

As he said, time and a place, and that wasn't it. The thing I love about this show is that all the characters are so complex. They all have their trauma and it's twisted them all in various ways. No black and white. They all feel very real and real people are messy and complicated and sometimes kind of awful. I mostly thought it was a literal haunting but this show does a great job of showing actual ghost hauntings and people being haunted by certain things. When watching this show you have to remember, we see WAY MORE than the characters do, which means we have more info, so while Steve and Shirley may appear to act like a-holes, they're reacting appropriately given the information that they have. The same grace should be extended to the psychiatrist treating Nell - I mean, this is a horror show where the supernatural is real, but in real life the way you treat someone's trauma is by making them brave enough to be able to withstand it, so if someone is afraid of, say, riding in an elevator, then you slowly push them to approach an elevator more and more overtime until they can muster up the courage to ride them. The fear won't disappear, but at least it will be managed, so him telling Nell that visiting the house and seeing it for what it is WOULD actually help Nell if this was the real world and not a TV show - the one mistake was not making sure that Nell is with someone when she goes to that house, preferably with her doctor, but he also didn't tell her to go to the house, he suggested that that's something that can be done, but Nell took it upon herself to go there without consulting with him.

    So many great reveals in this ep. The questions about her husband... that was devastating.
    I think it was good for us to see Luke while he was using. I still think Steve was out of line when Luke had 30 days, but I understand the anger. It just wasn't the right time to act like that. If that angry do not invite him over. I actually think Shirley was right to send him away from the wedding. We got to see how easily he walked over Nellie. Giving the pressure of that choice to her on her wedding day isn't fair. Of course she wanted him there, but she wanted the Luke she grew up with, not a high version.
    I am on her side throughout the Steve confrontation. Him writing that book pissed me off. If he had shared the experiences or believed them it would feel different, but he just used his siblings.
    I am completely on Theo's side during their confrontation though. Theo was a bit harsh, but not until after she was forced past her boundaries. Knowing how much she can feel when touching someone or something it feels no different than Nellie punching her when she grabbed her and forcing her hand down.
    I think it is interesting the different sibling confrontations and shows how some of our anger can be totally justified and some can be built up on our side. Every bit of this show is perfect. Flanagan truly thinks out his writing and I love it. That is true throughout his series. Haven't hit his movies yet. Excited to do that.

    I mean while I dont think I'd have written a book about it I have sympathy with Steve. Nell and Luke rely on him, he feel betrayed by his Dad etc. I became emotionally distant from my family because they risked dragging me under the water. When you're the one "coping" they'll cling to you and hate you for it. The barriers go up because you're protecting yourself from drowining. It is not healthy but its how it is.
    Steve is depressingly correct too.
    Lukes 'slick' friend did rob him.
    Luke has stolen from him
    Nell did flush her meds
    Imagine decades of dealing with that.

      Steven does have 'sight,' which means he's not only able to 'see' or 'perceive' the supernatural, but it also gives him insights into the real world as well. Unfortunately, he chooses to ignore what he's seeing a lot of the time.

  • @hopsonkim4952

    The thing about Steve is he’s pretty easy to hate but think about 2 things: 1) of course, his marriage is in the process of failing so he’s effed too, and 2) he also has just about the highest highs with everyone. Think about him at the wedding with Nell or in the treehouse with Luke; when things are easy, he’s an awesome brother. Now think how that’s gotten him beaten down over the years by a sister with depression, a brother who’s an addict, how controlling Shirley can be and how guarded Theo is. Even with his dad; how close they were and then how much he withdrew. Steve is the best when it’s easy and the worst when it’s hard.

    The actor that plays Doctor Montague (Nell's Psychiatrist) in this episode played Luke in the original film version of this story back in 1963. That was a nice little casting Easter egg, I thought, for fans of the original film.

    • @wilhelm-z4t

      Steven was such a sweet kid, who was very close to his father, but he turned into a bitter, somewhat condescending and arrogant adult. We all know he's in denial about seeing ghosts and about what happened "that night." He's also angry with his father for seemingly abandoning his mother and _him_ because Hugh lost custody of the children to busybody Aunt Janet. The latter also causing issues for the other children. However, Hugh acted very appropriately by prioritizing the safety of the children by removing them from the source of danger etc. on that night. It's also ridiculous for Steven to think the _entire_ family suffers from some sort of inherited mental illness. That's not how it works, for one. Yes, they all suffer from PTSD-like issues from their Hill House trauma, but they're also being actively haunted. Also, Steven has 'sight,' he knows more than he thinks he does.

    • @erikamendez6999
      @erikamendez6999 Месяц назад +3

      @@wilhelm-z4t 💯🎯 definitely agree with most of this! The only thing I would personally defer on is the idea that it’d be ridiculous to think everyone in the family could be suffering from mental illness. It’s certainly not always how it works, but from personal experience, it’s more common than people might think.

    This episode cemented it for me, this goes beyond a story and into the realm of thinking deeper about life and how we live it. Ive said it before to reactions for this show and on others by Mike Flanagan, the writing is astonishing, the actors delivery is so deeply felt and the way it is filmed is tremendous, he takes you right into the story, many come for the horror or the jump scares but episode by episode you become part of the family, the story and all the while you are absorbed and begin to think about what is going on beyond the obvious. It is masterful storytelling and I think Mike Flanagan is an absolute genius and a very deep thinker. On a lighter side despite having older brother troubles myself in life and not always having the best opinion of older siblings i do actually think that Steve gets a bit of a hard time not only from his family but also from us viewers cause he does make mistakes and he does act badly sometimes but he also is there a lot for his siblings and we don't mention those moments just his bad bits and at the bottom of it I think he really missed his mom but didn't know how to deal with it being a more logical, practical type so he put it all down to his Dad and mental illness.

    Ugh! "Dr." Montague. What a knucklehead! I think the dad's watch shows that Nell always was connected to her dad unlike the others. Also, another reference to clocks and time. Another important motif in the series. Five is an important motif in the series. Notice Olivia is wearing red. Red is another very important motif in the story. There's the parallel between the 5 diseased kittens and the 5 "diseased" or affected Crain children. There are the 5 stages of grief which are reflective of the children's persona: denial (Steve), anger (Shirley), bargaining (Theo), depression (Luke), and acceptance (Nell). Then there are the 5 psychic abilities (the 5 senses) which the Crain children manifest: sight (Steven), taste (Shirley), touch (Theo), smell (Luke) and hearing (Nellie). When Theo remarked to Steven that he was asleep for 99% of the last night's happenings, she WAS indirectly questioning how Steve knew what he wrote in the "Hill House" book because there was evidently more in the book than the other siblings knew. When Steve told Mrs. Walker he would write her story but change things, I think he thinks he's just embellishing the material. In fact, he's making it more real and true. Steven has psychic "sight." Everything he wrote in "Hill House" actually happened. Steve does see ghosts and more. Shirley's ability "taste" is manifested by her mouth, her sleep talk. We know how Theo's ability "touch" works. Young Theo also said the house was "cold." Little Luke said the house "smells" and little Nellie says it's "loud." They can smell and hear the ghosts. While Theo's gift is pretty cool, Steve's turns out to be coolest.

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek Месяц назад

      I wouldn't call Dr. Montague a knucklehead. His advice in a non-supernatural story would be 100% accurate and correct. Nell should go and confront the house - the source of all her trauma. It's not his fault that he doesn't know he's in a story with a haunted house and ghosts.
