Starfleet Academy: Intro

- Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the PC-equivalent of the SNES game. The missions aren't 100% identical, but there are some similarities.
Getting this working correctly was a pain in the butt. It works on Windows XP, but the in-mission audio skips around. It's even worse on a virtual machine of Windows 98.
Fortunately, a special SVN build of DOSBox can handle Windows 95 and the game fairly well. Игры
All credit to Mike Shirak for this sequence. I Directed the cut scenes, and Rusty Buchert Produced the game sequences. The filming took 4 weeks, and the entire project took two years to complete.
@Gordy No - they were all shot together in the same way as the TV series. No composition other than the backgrounds.
From one Trekkie to another, thank you and your team for all your hard work, Martin.
yes but how was it directing Shatners hairpiece?
@@purefoldnz3070 "Hairy";-)
@@martind1000 hair raising hehe
I love how well they wrote Kirk here, and you can tell that Shatner loved stepping into his boots again.
He took a lot of persuading;-)
@@martind1000 Somewhat virgin territory. by this point he had done voice work for 25th and Judgement Rites, but doing a full performance on camera for a game... At that time I can see the trepidation. He always tried to keep his image consistent.
Now, it's like hey, what's the big deal? The lines have blurred so much we have Star Wars TV shows using game engines for their visual effects. But it all started with games like this, and Wing Commander.
I was going to comment this very thing. Kirk’s speech - now that has been written by a good writer who knew what and whom he was writing about.
I mean he starts off by right out stating “it’s often said that I commanded the best; the best ship, the best crew..”.
I myself cringe a bit because of the pure arrogance that comes from saying “everyone says I’m the best” (he doesn’t say exactly that, I know), but that’s exáctly something that Kirk would say.
And then the point he makes about managing your crew and what leadership is about hits its mark too, followed by a classical Kirk closing statement.
Yeah to the person who wrote the dialog: you did good!
This is one of my favorite opening sequences from any game I've played. Perfectly captures this era of Trek.
I remember this game. I played this game hours on end everyday throughout college. Some days my classes were StarFleet Academy instead of boring chemistry.
Shatner was so good here and his lines were movie quality. I’m glad he didn’t phone it in for a computer game lol
Haha, if you look good at the cadets during the applause scene you see that some of them have been 'copied', they even seem to jump back time sequences.
Guess those darn Dominion shapeshifters were already infiltrating the Alpha Quadrant in the 23th century.
Well, Odo tried to assassinate the Federation President once.
You're right - the reason was budget - to fully populate the Academy Hall with real actors would have cost a lot of money. Example: to costume and makeup a single Klingon cost over $5000 at the time....
03:42 _"To challenge you to boldly go where no man has gone before."_
*San Fransisco*
LoL
Good luck...fair weather...and never forget risk is your business...
Good quote as any from the captain.
Hahaha, my good friend, Bill Shatner....
So this is set in 2288, 1 year after the events of Star Trek V, but 5 years before 'The Undiscovered County' (according to the official chronology)
Yeah they've aged too much for that.
I used to help my dad play this when I was a kid. We were really bad at it and kept getting yelled at by the commanding officer for crashing our ship. Good times
"I'm sure you're heard a lot about the SF computer simulator."
*Clapping*
Why
Cuz they saw "Star Trek II"
Because at that moment, Kirk and Sulu walked in.
Why not?
Takei and Shatner really put their all in this. Actors doing their characters for video games often phone it in but this felt like a movie.
I remember playing this state of the art game back in the day, thanks for the upload.
They don't make games like this anymore.
a bit late ...but what do you mean..story wise, gameplay wise...?
So true
Its amazing how much games have regressed in all aspects except graphics. Modern games are released unfinished with major bugs, broken up with DLCs, and often filled with microtransactions to justify its existence and continued development. The art is long gone in the AAA realm.
@@florianfrueh3282 At the very least, a game with full-motion video of well-known actors, and not CGI-based bots. I know it's pricey, but even the AAA game makers don't do this anymore.
@@andywolan It's not necessary. In-game cutscenes created with the game engine are much more versatile and do not result in a break between the game world and cutscenes, as would be the case with filming with real actors. Besides, they are good enough.
After seeing this intro I had to have this game. I have actually bought it 4 times since the original and still have one copy in a box unopened!!! I LOVE this intro and LOVE this game!!!!!
Thank you so much. This brings back so many memories!
Sulu is wearing the wrong rank!
He was just promoted, that very day, and hasn`t got a new uniform yet.
I bough this game when it first came out for PC on 6 CDs.
I'm enjoying replaying it on Steam today with no need for discs!
I can't get this or SFC to play right from Steam.
@@Arthezius It's also available on good old games.
I played this on Windows XP back in 2002, and it worked just fine.
I wonder if Kirk and Sulu actually filmed this together
Yep. Remember reading a "making of" article in the L.A. Times just when this game debuted. The two actors couldn't stand each other and made no pretenses about it outside of their filmed scenes together.
Kirk don't like running late. So, they take a shuttlecraft? Umm, transporters.
I know there's rumours of a Starfleet Academy TV show being made and I think it would be just wild if they producers of it somehow included Kirk's address from this scene into it as archive footage in the same way Zefram Cochrane's recorded speech about the Warp 5 engine build was included for the launch of NX-01.
Damn. I wish I still owned this game.
On GOG and Steam. Currently on sale on both.
Will S was very good, but without the team they would have fallen a long ways down! Thanks -I'll have to try the game one day!
always wondered why they didn't use the transporter if they were running late
Lovely speeches, true words until today. Thanks.
Rumor says that this game + Klingon academy will be on GOG soon.
Have to look out for that I enjoy replaying the classics there.
My most favorite of Star Trek pc games
It is no longer the Kirk in the uniform, but Shatner.
I don't play computer games, and I'm a little old, but this is VERY impressive stuff! They've come a long, long way in imagery.
I really need to find my CDs for this game...
So much soul!
True. I stand corrected, good sir.
I always found Fed starbases with the enclosed spaces and massive construction costs to be too much.
Will shatner is the only person suited for kirk
This game and Wing Commaner IV are the one I still love to play.
Though I do wish they would make a massive update to STA, so that it has updated graphics.
Look up "Wing commander Darkest Dawn" its a fan project made with Freespace 2 engine, but it became my favorite wing commander game after i replayed it more times then any of the others.
My favorite thing was if you tried to fire on Spacedock, you got a very stern talking to from the commandant!
this works on Windows 8.1 x64 (compatibility for 95) to my surprise...and if you want the joystick...you need the SFA 1.15 patch. Amazing a 1997 game has worked across all these platforms....where other newer games cant jump from XP to Vista or Vista to Win 7 or 8.
if you ever desperate to run a old game and compatibility mode dont work try VM (Virtual Machine) Oracle or something!
+Jonathan Maughan Virtual Box I meant!
Amazing how Takei and Shatner can slip in and out of their Trek characters so well - it's great to view them donning their uniforms. Certainly, Shatner's characters always have his EGO, but he does indeed deliver! I wish he'd lose just a few pounds - it would be healthier for him...
A bit funny since he's outlived almost all of his co-stars.
When a simulator gets more applause then Mr. Sulu AND God.....I mean Kirk.
Very interesting!
Run the game in compatibility mode for Win98. There are some graphical glitches, but it works.
@murryduck I have no clue. It sort of runs on XP. A virtual machine could work to simulate Windows 98.
I used a special build of DOSBox that could install Windows 95/98. It's a bit harder to do than most VMs, though... and it's buggy.
I would have thought that Starfleet Academy would have an Admiral (not a Captain) as a Commandant.
What is this!!! I've never heard of this before did you create it!??
Ahhhh I love it!!!
It’s a PC game from the 90s.
Awesome game storyline. Very envolving and original.
Omg, whos cutting onions? Damm ninjas!
I am trying to find something that was similar to this but was set during the Next generation. I remember my dad playing it and you could actually choose what starship to pilot. Does anyone know what that one was called? Edit: Never mind it is this one I asked my Dad and showed him this intro, and he said it was this.
Is Kirk saying that space dock procedure getting longer and longer a joke about TMP when Enterprise leaves space dock?
Captain Archers time line
I think he slimmed down a bit since then.
WOuld love to play this on my Linux box
SHATNER
kirks version original series for me
Damn, looks good. I only had the SNES version which was good but this blows my 13 year old mine. Also, George Takei merrits an Oh myyyyyy.
This must be in between Star Trek 5 and Star Trek 6 if Sulu is not the captain of the Excelsior yet am I correct on this?
Captain Kirk, you may take me to the stars anytime!
sfa ka sfc 1 and 2 were my favs.
Seriously, if they ever decide on doing another Star Trek TV series, they totally need to set it in this era of the Star Trek continuum, and focus on Starfleet Academy. Instead of a ship, the focus will be on a single class of cadets, and each season will be a 'semester' at the Academy, with a total of six (assuming they go through 3 years of study), with the show ending sort of like Animal House where they show what happened to everyone after they graduated.
That sounds pretty boring. Cadets don't usually go on dangerous missions and if they do, it's in the holodeck or simulator. And not everyone is interested in the interpersonal squabbles of young adolescents.
heh this is one of my dad's favorite games
If you could choose which universe to live in, would it be Star Wars, Star Trek (Captain Kirk version) Star Trek (Captain Picard version) Wing Commander, Independence War, Decent, Freelancer or another I haven't listed here?
+Brütal Löve I haven't played all those games, but might as well combine them all since Trek has multiple universes and Star Wars occurs in another galaxy.
+Brütal Löve I would definitely live in Picards!!!
Which one lets me fuck holograms the most and people don't frown upon this lifestyle choice?
+mokook and when I say fuck I mean some really dark shit
I chose Picard's Star Trek era.
nice
The Nr1 Game for me as a Kid. I loved it!
I got it to work in Windows 7 through the file "sfa3d.exe" then compatibility Win95
El mejor juego se star trek de todos los tiempos, inspirador, excelentes historia. Yo lo jugue y lo pase muchas veces.
Starfleet Academy Toga party
this looks amazing! too bad i dont have a disc drive on my computer...
The game is 5 discs. I loved every second of it.
Actually all they'd have to do is reformat it for modern OS, I don't know why they don't do that.
Sulu was captain or commander?
i rember when my dad bought this for me as a lil kid!!!
This is now available on GOG so hopefully the bugs have been removed.
Whats GOG?
Good
Old
Games
GOG dot Com
Interesting...
Wow nice video. It is done with panache(if this is right word for something done with a lot of work and money)
Is this the last appearance by Shatner as Kirk?
I got DVD-ROM version. It plays nice, but the movies don't work. Any Ideas?
If you're running it under Windows 7 or 8, that might be the problem. Compatibility mode might fix it.
Otherwise, you could try Windows 95 or 98 under a virtual machine.
A virtual machine? How does that work?
Alexander Sampang
It's software to emulate a computer system. It's useful when compatibility is needed, but may not work with all games (depends on how powerful hardware the original required).
Microsoft Virtual PC, Oracle Virtual Box, and VMware Player are three free ones I've tried out. I think Starfleet Academy works on one of them (though perhaps not perfectly). You'll also need a CD or ISO of Windows 95 or 98. Create a Virtual Machine, install Windows, let it update, then mount the CD/DVD/ISO and install the game.
(I don't know if these virtual machines can handle DVD-ROMs since I've only ever used CD ISOs with them.)
Alexander Sampang It's on GOG now; runs fine on Win 7 Pro 64bit - solved my issues with the old CD / DVD roms.
GOG?
You know since they build vintage game consoles to run old NES and SEGA and ATARI games how long is it until they make vintage PC consoles to run old Windows 98 games?
Kirk: "Sulu - You waited thirty years to blow me. Now`s your chance"
Sulu: "Oh my..."
The money interplay must have spent on their games, it’s no wonder they went bust
How is it that Shatner looks better now than he does here??
is anyone prepared to do me copy please
Who the fuck kicked Shatner through wardrobe? Looks like he had a fight with the uniform and it won
This scene was longer in the book. Probably got cut for budget
The book was Diane Carey's novelisation of this game; the game came first. She made up entirely that "Red Squad-esque" opening sequence. I personally didn't like it, even though I love Carey's TOS work.
I still have my copy of the game but don't ask me where. This is by far my favorite Star Trek game even thought it took a long time and the purchase of a joystick to complete.
They finally got Kirk out of mothballs for this one. He's been living in the NCC-1701 replica in the Starfleet museum because he's embarrassed that he can't get any work unless it's Star Trek related.
I love Trolls :)
If this game was not so buggy I could beaten it.
When Bill was on the green screen he acts like he thought that hall render and crowd were gonna be waaaaay bigger than they ended up.
I remember playing this when I was young... I was so bad at commanding a starship I think I never finished a single mission, just for my defense I'll add that it was one of the first few games I ever played.
Still remember it as being better than ST Legacy or many other new games.
If you're lucky Gog.com sells it with 100% compatibility version.
Yeah but - even the toupee and the makeup seems better these days.
Crazy.
watching this 2021 this games needs a reboot!
No. You need to create your OWN rather than destroying what came before! Be creative and stop copying the work of others claiming it as your own!
@@StarFleet_Tech1701 what are you talking about 😂 I'm not saying change the game I'm saying add modern graphics to this game so people can play it now a days and appreciate ky
This game needs a complete remastered look but the video cut scenes were so compressed. If they had the uncompressed negatives and make new graphics, this would be an amazing game for the likes of Playstation, Xbox, and Next Gen PCs.
William Shanter always moves like actor and not like military man.
+Michael Bowie How else can a fat, balding man like him walk?
Like me?
I don't know how you walk. I don't even know what you look like. You could be Dr. Claw for all I know.
I hate cats and as for Fred Welker voice...................
+Sota Steelwing Does balding affect movement?
or buy old machine from that era and play all old games
*sigh* so many uniform errors.... Granted it's pretty much one common flaw: division colors. Sulu should be white, the cadets should all be red.
5:56
This game was sorta prequal
Meh, i like more Klingon academy , they have both fun and study ;)
It’s too bad, in real life, William Shatner and George Takei couldn’t stand each other.
It ruins the stories when you see Kirk and Sulu interacting with one another.
Must have needed the money to do that bit of shit
Bill notoriously does anything for money.
