  • For the past three years Mtg has been oversaturated by outside IPs. This has made a lot of players a little too upset, but in this video I try to provide an alternative viewpoint on the situation which I haven't heard anywhere else yet. I'm interested in your thoughts!

Found you via algorithm so something you're doing must be working!
I think MTG has been a medium since the first set that told a different story than a previous set.
The game mechanics have always been generic enough to fit nearly any setting and personality. I think a a big draw of the game is that process of finding identity and expressing yourself via the identity of the colors.

Thank you and yes, that's true! I'd say that up until Mirrodin, Magic very much used to be a pretty self-contained thing, but gradually started showing its great potential with the ventures into never before seen planes. The capacity has always been there, as you say, the mechanics are broad enough to fit a multitude of settings and ideas, and I think that's exactly the reason why Magic is doing so well and has risen to the top of the tcg scene. And now we are seeing the full scope of the possibilities which in my eyes solidifies this idea.

Say what you want, Universes Beyond is an amazing idea. I've never played MtG competitively (though I've been playing PTCG competitively for more than 10 years now), nor am I a superfan of LotR but the combination of a card game I know basic rules of with a popular, and most importantly lore-rich, series made me come to my first MtG tournament. Yes, it was a small 2HG prerelease, and we ended 3-2, but it was so much fun reading all the cards, their interactions and the stories they are telling. Very much looking forward to Assassin's Creed and Fallout

I always love to hear stories like this amongst the negativity that has surrounded these sets! I believe every expansion has its target audience and said target audience just can't be the entirety of the audience, right. The beauty of Magic is that there's something for everyone - and that coincidentally adds to it being a strong standalone medium.
