Now THAT is how you make a video! Well done! I get so tired of people talking smack about any product and have no FACTS to back up what they say. Thanks!
Both your peripheral AF points may be out of adjustment, which does happen on occasion. To be certain I'd suggest you first make sure the center point is properly AF tuned. An improperly tuned center point may still yield acceptably sharp photos for the center but poor peripheral point results. If you still see the issue after verifying the AF tune I'd suggest sending your D800 into Nikon. I just posted a new AF tune technique you can use - search for "DotTune" here on youtube.
i bought 2 bodies, weeks from each other, after 30 years nikon, and i can honestly say, i hate nikon now, cause i dont need this crap, or return or anything else, when i can afford it , im going to leica, even though it is manual focus, it is sharp as hell, and since i only do landscape , nikon can kiss my ass. i have done all the firm ware updates to date. nevertheless, your videos are the best on the web so far, nice work,
Warren Kelly You comment on every video review on youtube about the D800/D800E/D810, you always say they suck, and that you are going to Leica.... 1 of 2 things are happenning here: or you are a troll paid by Leica, or your mom just didn't breastfeed you and you are mad with the world just by that...
Live view focusing is beautiful - wow. Thanks for the effort. I'm sure people will doubt it, but it seems like it is something that ought to be fixed, and not simply by a workaround with individual point tuning or reducing aperture to expand the DOF for focus. Shoddy. I still love that camera though (despite being a canon 20D user haha).
Thanks for the video. My camera is currently at El Segundo for the same issue. Fingers crossed. Many mixed results from others that have sent theirs in.
Experiencing this issue on a D800 I just bought used from a camera shop, first I thought it was technique, but after more experience it became clear the left AF is out of wack and especially compared to the Live View focus it is very inaccurate. The sensor itself is still phenomenal - and you can adjust the standard color cast if you don’t like it, like I did - but this AF is a real bummer. If you are in the market for a used D800 be sure to check this! Nikon is able to adjust the AF, but if you are out of warranty that can cost you. Be sure to test multiple lenses.
In any case I prefer this problem and avoid that AF point (1 between 51) in the D800 and have all my pictures ready, instead of having everywhere in the D600 dust/oil points and then correcting with spot removal in LR5 in all the pictures I take.
Thanks for the help, testcams! I followed your testing method and found something odd. LiveView focusing at all points is sharp. Center normal AF is sharp. However, both far-left and far-right normal AF are equally less sharp (than center or LiveView). Is this normal or do I have a different defect?
with my d800, pictures taken with AF and liveview are almost the same. pictures taken with left and right AF are also the same. however, pictures taken with center af is sharper than that of left and right AF. is this normal? thank you.
Hi there, are you familiar with "Photo SFXart Tricks" (search on Google for it)? There you will find a useful free video showing how you can make brilliant photographs. It made it easier for Joe to make photos that have that wow-effect when you look at them. I hope it will help you too...
lol and you wanna believe youtube? this can go on forever there is no end to it.. I just liked that symbol and used it.. I dont have any particular affection towards Egyptian culture... guess what I've been watching when I got your message /watch?v=U4kTNS18ses
I tried this test on mine using a 17-35 F2.8 @ F6.3 and it's blurry as....

On affected bodies it is usually noticeable with most lenses with a focal length below 50mm and a wide'ish aperture.
Awesome video!!! Brief, not too technical, very informative and easy explanation.

hi,
thanks for the video, is this issue with all d800 or specific patch? also have you face any dust/oil issue with this camera as in the d600?
Thanks for the video. My camera is currently at El Segundo for the same issue. Fingers crossed. Many mixed results from others that have sent theirs in.

Does this problem only occur on 24 f1.4, 14-24 and 28 f1.8? Or are 24-70 and 35 f1.4 also affected?

Same problem, I just can’t live without the Live view while I’m talking photos
I noticed the same problem on my D800E - Tested with the same lens - Nikkor 24 1.4 G ED
my d800 body has this issue
with my d800, pictures taken with AF and liveview are almost the same. pictures taken with left and right AF are also the same. however, pictures taken with center af is sharper than that of left and right AF. is this normal? thank you.
