I want to talk about the iPod. Why it became a cultural phenomenon, helped to save Apple and give birth to the iPhone… but also… why it absolutely had to die.
And I want to focus on three very specific decisions that Apple made, decisions that led to the iPod’s incredible success, but also… it’s inevitable destruction.

MorningBrew wont let me join for some reason...I'll try again later. As for what music player I use, I still use an iPod touch, lol. It's useful for my commute in my old car and even older truck, neither has a modern enough stereo and they aren't worth an upgrade so I use a BT adapter and the iPod. My phone stays where it belongs in my pocket.

I kinda want a dedicated music player again tho… so my phone doesn’t get tied up pulling music duty, staying close to BT speaker, passing around so everyone can take a turn DJing, music interrupted by phone calls and notifications. Plus you can have mega storage for off-line playback.

@@Tognar I bought a Samsung A52s for that purpose for $360. 128gb, there is a slot for a micro SD card, it supports Bluetooth LDAC, digital out on the USB-C port, and it has a 3.5mm headphone jack. I kept the apps to a minimum and "Do not disturb" is permanently enabled. And I have a data only SIM in it to stream music when I'm off WiFi. Apple music does have an Android app but that's not my daily driver. It beats my other phones, tablets and MacBook Pro as a streamer.

The click wheel iPod being available as a Windows device was my entry into Apple. I got one for free through one of those weird 'get your friends to sign up' pyramid schemes way back when. I loved it so much, I only wished I didn't have to carry that and a cell phone around with me. Then I bought the iPhone 3GS. Then an iPad. Then a Mac mini. Now I'm considered an "Apple Guy" by a lot of people. But I started off as a Windows devotee ... I had even worked at Microsoft!

As a musician, I got (still use) so much use out of my iPods when I was living in Japan, riding the trains every day or biking around my town. I used it for work or to relax in every country I've travelled to since 2006. Still rocking my 5'th gen iPod Classic, I had a 7'th gen (120gb) when I lived in Tokyo but it got stolen when I came back to the states.
I had iphones for years but I went to android about 4 or 5 years ago because I felt they were a bit lacking and overpriced when I could do all the same stuff through Google and have an actual storage cloud system inlike iCloud. Just so much more apps that I need are available and they have more advanced functions, I can upgrade the size of my (multiple) SD cards. Currently rocking a Samsung Galaxy.
I was going to buy another 7'th gen iPod and modify it to play FLAC, WAV, DSD and other lossless file types with either a modded DAC internally or with an external DAC like back in 2006/7 lol! Now, I'm looking more to the Surfans F20, FiiO M11 or one of the Astell & Kern models. Thanks for the in depth history on the iPod Rene!!

I saw this video posted this morning just before I needed to start work. I had barely enough time that i could have watched it, but i would have needed to watch it on my phone and then really hurry into work. I held out until i was home in front of my 5k, 27" screen. I had been looking forward to watching it all day. And man, Rene, it did not disappoint! I still, still, after watching the clip dozens of times, get chills down my spine and tears in my eyes when I see Steve announcing the original iPhone. And hearing Jony Ive talk about how the team intentionally designed the iPod to have an iconic appearance, one that needed no logo or branding to be immediately recognized, also gave me chills. I feel like this is why Apple is so reluctant to make major year-over-year changes to its devices, unlike other companies. I feel like this is why the upcoming iPhone's hole punch and pill display was chosen. If Apple was replacing the iconic notch, which it always embraced despite any negative rhetoric, it would be with another iconic design. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for another great video, Rene. It was worth the wait for sure.

    1. Apple’s transition from iTunes to Apple Music [& other services]
    2. Apple’s history of acquiring companies to introduce great products without building them from scratch [like you mentioned with iTunes, like Beats Music for Apple Music, like Apple’s acquisition of Logic & later what became GarageBand & so on]
    3. Times Steve Jobs deferred to other great minds to bring about great new products at Apple [learning iPod was contracted into existence is soooo interesting. Is there more of that? What other products or product attributes are the result of those respectful arguments as you put it?]
bonus topic. Apple’s impact on music industry & creative industry through facilitation of digital markets & offerings of creative tools [especially GarageBand iOS & the AUv3 protocol]

  • @Sacto1654

I think Apple is preparing to introduce ultra wideband (UWB) wireless connectivity for the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max (the Beats Fit Pro may go in that direction, too). The result: essentially Compact Disc (or better!) quality audio transmitted wirelessly to headphones with very little latency. That's why the iPod is being phased out.

I guess, one of the main reasons I've ended up using Apple ecosystem, was my experience with Safari browser at Windows. Not that is was good (I've never used it as my primary browser), but I was so impressed how it renders fonts, it was so much better that the default Windows font rendering, that I was hooked.

I was a Palm user at the time the iPod launched. An iPod touch with high ress audio capabilities with powerful dac built it, something like what Sony is doing now with their high end Walkman players, that would be a perfect companion with their Apple Music lossless service. I'm an iPod guy. Grab me by the shirt and shake me into reality and tell me it's dead Jim. Apple marketing would have us believe that every new product kills the old. But as we've seen not every generation (iteration) of products makes the old version infirm and feeble. Apple stopped making the iPod for the simple reason is that it's not the money maker it once was. But in the aftermath of iPod frenzy where thousands maybe millions of us have old iPods sitting in junk drawers untouched and forgotten. There it remains until some curious soul rummaging for a Phillips screwdriver finds it and starts tinkering. Somewhere in the dark of night a eureka moment happens and an old iPod leaps back to life and sweet sweet music is heard once more. No phone call, advertisement, email notification or text message is there to snatch you away. It's totally off grid and there is beauty in this. It's the antithesis to listening to music on a cell phone. But Apple stopped making them. I don't care. There are millions of these devices out there that nobody wants and for $30 I will happily relieve them of it and upgrade it to beyond the original specs and make it better than when it was new.

I'm old enough to remember that air bubbles story as actually involving Sony's Akio Morita and the Walkman, not Apple. But I found many citations of it having happened at Job's Apple. Well I understand what your saying but the new Apple makes some difference decisions. There is no question that if Apple put Mac OS on the iPad Pro sales of iPad Pro would go up and sales of Mac would take a hit. Apple is aware of this and is unwilling to allow iPad Pro to eat away Mac sales. I for one would replace my current iPad Pro and 16in Mac with a 13 in iPad Pro that could run Mac OS.

    • @ReneRitchie
      @ReneRitchie  2 года назад +6

No. Steve thought the Mac was still too complicated for mainstream people. He wanted something even simpler that could push computing fully into the mass market. Apple already has a Mac. The iPad was and is literally meant to be for everyone who doesn't want a Mac. So putting the Mac on it makes zero sense. (Even if Apple capitulates and does it). The answer is making Macs so good no one even thinks about macOS on an iPad, right?

Also October 2021 was ipods 20th year and there was no mention which was another big sign that iPod was not goin to be made anymore. October 2021 made 9 years of using the same case design for the touch; the case only had color changes and removal of the dongle strap holder with the 6th gen. In its 10 years it has only had chip updates and eliminations of smaller drives. Also in the last several years people give their little kids their older iPhones or purchase new iPhone SE's for them.

Sadly, the need of an iPod is still there. It's just not big enough market for Apple! I still use mine when I workout and my nieces kids use them as they are just not old enough to get a phone yet.
Think of it this way you give your kids safety scissors for their first cutting tool, clearly giving them a razor sharp chefs knife would not be smart! That same logic holds true here as well! Besides, an iPod is a lot cheaper than an iPhone if it gets broken or lost!
If I was Apple I would license the iPod Touch out to someone to carry it onwards. Even if they only sold it online it would be smarter than letting it go fully.
Sometimes it's important to hold onto old tech this is one of those places.

    • @Nathan_Lundstrom

The ‘replacement’ for someone who isn’t old enough to have a phone is an Apple Watch SE and $329 iPad. They’ll get a bigger screen for their ‘screen time’ and the watch is capable of cellular connection without the expanded capabilities of a phone/data device.
An Apple Watch has internal storage to save music playlists, or cellular connectivity to play music when you’re not using internally saved music.

Hi Rene, I read a story in MacWorld about how long Apple computers are supported. Apparently, software support ranges between 7 and 10 years. I think that Apple needs to support their computers as long as in the windows world. I have a windows laptop from 2011, which started with windows 7 and now runs windows 10. I get regular security and software updates and it runs all the latest third party software. Apple really needs to provide software and security updates more than 7 years. Have you had conversations with other Apple focused RUclipsrs about this? This would help bolster their green cred and reduce the amount of "obsolete" computer hardware in the world.

AT&T was the only service provider for the iPhone when it launched so that service was a requirement in the beginning. That's one of the reasons I was not an early adopter. I did buy the 1st gen iPod touch when it launched.

@@keithjohnson2863 I know that AT&T was the only service provider. I was just stating when it launched Steve said it was the best iPod ever and that there were people who wanted to just buy it outright and were unable to when you could do that with any other phone at the time. There were lawsuits filed because of that. Then around a year and half or 2 years later Apple came out with the iPod Touch.

Eventho' I love and loved the iPod, it was time. The iPhone can do what the iPod could, plus be a phone, home computer, etc. The iPod was a great product, but when the iPhone was introduced, it's exactly what Rene Ritchie said.

Love my iPod Nanos. I have versions 4, 5, and 6. My wife still has a pristine iPod original w/hard drive, and it is a beautiful piece of technology. I use my Nanos daily to podcast talk radio. IPhones are way too big and expensive for that purpose. I hate smart phones anyway. I use my wife’s iPhone when necessary. My $30 flip phone is perfect for me, and it easily slips into any pocket. It is a sad day.

I admire that Jobs would happily introduce new products that cannibalized sales of older products if he believed the new product was much better. I'm not sure if the same can be said of Apple today. I think the sole reason we don't have Macbooks with touch screens is that Apple wants you to buy an iPad and a Macbook. I'm guessing Jobs wouldn't have cared about that but instead simply wanted to develop the best possible product.

It's was Jobs' idea not to give the MacBook a touch screen. That's why they came up with the touch bar

It didn't HAVE to die, but it did die because most people now own an iPhone or an iPad and use those to listen to their music. Even Android phones and tablets have access to Apple Music. And that's not even bringing in Spotify, Pandora, and Amazon Music. So the iPod has become obsolete. Just like the portable cassette player and CD player before it. Yes, they still exist - you can find one if you look really hard - but they're very rare. I don't know anybody who actually owns one.

The iPod and its legacy died when apple removed the headphone jack to the iPhone. The iPhone should be the device where that iPod legacy lives but not anymore.

The whole piracy saying was wrong from the beginning... If people never pirated, they wouldn't have known it existed , and arguably, "try before you buy".
If I don't like a song, I just wasted buying it for no reason. I get these companies behaviours against such issues, but they were going down the wrong path
Why do you thing Apple Music doesn't care where your music comes from today when you upload stuff? Apple's finally relaxes..It only took them *30 years*
Besides, everything has to die at one point. Its like saying you gotta keep supporting this software forever... that will never happen.

It is my opinion: Ironically, the iPod had the worst sound quality of them all. Nobody cared less about normal sound than apple. It was just some junk, with no bass and too much high. A 10 dollar LG mp3 played better than the flagship iPod Classic 80Gb.

Apple killed the iPod by making the thing hopelessly complex. It was simple in the beginning, but by end-of-live was terribly complex, snarled up in Apple's destruction of the music industry and online music sales that ultimately benefitted no one. Apple Walmarted the entire music industry like building a Supercenter in a small town, killing off all the small local businesses, then pulling out for greener pastures, leaving a wasteland behind. Apple killed the music industry and took food out of the mouths of starving artist musicians. Now only the big catalogs make money, and nobody invests in new talent. And, btw, today's music stinks. iPod is a case study for every bad thing that can be said about Apple.
