What evidence is there about Buddhism flourishing during the regime of Shashank? I mean it could also be argued that even if it was thriving in the capital city, Shashank probably didn't want to inflame the Buddhists more than he already had(if we're to go by Huen Tsang's account) in order to prevent an uprising. My point is if this rare instance of religious oppression is mentioned in two separate accounts it must have some truth behind it. Also let's not forget that Huen Tsang was from a different country and a simple travelling scholar, so what possible impetus could he have about slandering a foreign govt.

Other than their antiquity, in no other factor they are supposedly more Indian than Buddhist Tripitaka and Mahayana Sutras. Moreover what Identity are you talking about, sir? Vaishnavism emerged out of Vedic traditions from Mathura region, Shaivism and Jainism were more ancient systems, Buddha in his lifetime alone had travelled nearly the whole of Northern India. This is not ignoring the fact that Kalpa Sutras of Vedas mention Eastern India in highly negative terms. Magadha itself is hardly positively mentioned in Puranic sources. It never perished completely. Indian Buddhism is still followed in Nepal and Sri Lanka (and somewhat even Bangladesh). Even in British India, Bengal had a significant population of tradional Buddhists.
However, it's true that the decline of Buddhism in India was because of violence. As the historic consensus goes, it was done by islamic invaders, particularly by the Khiljis. Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed Nalanda University to destroy Buddhism and spread Islam.

@@GyanPrakash-gj9wb That's false. This narrative is of pretty recent times. The biographies of Shankara never mention any significant debate with a Buddhist scholar. However, he debated ALL the philosophies of that time. In fact, the primary rival of Shankara's Vedanta was the orthodox Vedic philosophy called Mimansa (Purva Mimansa). His most significant debate is mentioned to be against Vedic ritualistic orthodoxy propagating householder life, with a Brahmin Mimansa scholar called Mandana Mishra.
