I always interpreted this song to be about someone with depression & PTSD or other mental/emotional struggles, causing him "yellow eyes," based on the saying: "all is yellow to the jaundiced eye." The world can still seem dull, bleak, and terrifying when you struggle with mental illness---even when you truly, deeply, love someone and thus try your hardest to overcome it and make it work. In this sense it feels like he wants to find purpose as well as true love, but his painful memories and fears get in the way; since PTSD can make it nearly impossible to separate trauma from reality (especially when one lets their guard down and has to face deeper, buried emotions). So, the person runs from the relationship out of fear, while under the guise of stoicism and dissatisfaction, and/but also to protect both himself and the person he loves from even deeper hurt. Ultimately, he is reliving a toxic pattern that he may never break out of because he's afraid of being vulnerable, despite his profound loneliness. The video illustrates how it also hurts both parties; breaking both of their hearts, and turning each into cold, hard shell of who they once were
