Lou is better at negotiating contracts than people give him credit for. Engvall has a lot of potential. The two worst contracts in the league are Seth Jones on Chicago (8 years 76 million dollars, signed until 2030 with a full NMC) and Darnell Nurse on Edmonton (8 years 74 million dollars, signed until 2030 with a full NMC until 2027). The Jones deal doesn’t hurt Chicago nearly as much as Nurse’s deal hurts Edmonton. Edmonton is about to be swept in the finals by Florida. Chicago right now has a ton of cap space and that’s what bad teams need to have. If you know you’re bad, don’t spend so much money.
I think THG summed it up best. You get the feeling Lou is getting sick of modern agents so he's saying " here's 7 years now get the hell out of my office!"
Engvall brings 2 things the Isles lack, speed and puck movement. Makes sense to me. He was also a big part of the Isles best line at the end of the year and the playoffs, Nelson Palmeri and Engvall.
Engvall filled the hole that Beuvillier left, a speedy winger for Nelson. And we got him for 1.15 mil cheaper then Beau and hes only one year older then Beau. If we were okay with spending 4.15 on Beau for a streaky half point per game player then the Engvall contract will be fine.
I agree but I still wouldn’t have given him a seven year contract. There’s no denying he was awesome with Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri (9 points in 18 games). I would’ve gone maximum four years. The salary cap should keep going up little by little every summer (It went from 82.5 million to 83.5 million this summer). The money that was given to Engvall is fine but the term burns my eyes.
Look. Like Steve said. There are guys who are high on and there are guys you are low on to. Sorokin is a sweetheart deal. He didn't want to leave the island. The island, the franchise, the fans have been great to him! Pierre has potential. And this contract has potential to look as a net-positive as prices escalate four players that might not seem worth it. I wish we had something new to add to the roster. I'm happy it is what it is for now.
The biggest problem is, we have locked up the same team that got pushed out in the 1st round. Now we know that there will be no big time puck moving defensemen or goal scoring forward signed to help go deeper next year. Is this the right strategy? Having faith didn't pay off last year. Why would it pay off a year later with an aging team? There is a ton of unrealized potential in this lineup. Time will tell if Barzal, Bo, Engvall, Fasching, Wahlstrom and Holmstrom can step up and make a difference.
Sorokin deal is going to age wonderfully I love it, Pierre’s deal isn’t bad at all. Sure it’s long term but at 3mil it’s reasonable. Mayfield at 3.5 for 7 years is rich for my blood, but with the cap going up I could hate it more. Varlamov for 4 years is a head scratcher tho, he’s already 35 and is now a backup. If the price isn’t terrible I suppose it’s fine but 🤷♂️. Good all around day for isles nation
hopefully now people can see the isles were winning in SPITE of Lou not because of him. he’s Chuck Fletcher bad lol. that’s still seen as a hot take (somehow) but I think people are FINALLY coming around
The engvall contract will 100% depend on the cap, if the cap goes up like projected, you can easily dump the contract in 4-5 years at the cost of a mid round pick.
I disagree. Way too much money for a goaltender. Vegas and Colorado just showed in back to back year that you can win the cup with average and cheap goaler as long as you have a good team around.
Ironically the leafs extended the guy who is the definition of big for no reason in David Kampf, watching him on the hawks was tough because he would refuse the board battles… hopefully he continues to grow his game though, it is trending that way
All NY Isles fans knew Ilya wasn’t going anywhere & he wasn’t going to ask for top dollars to stay. He’s been saying he doesn’t want to play for anyone other team for years now. Hell, he just bought a house on Long Island last off season. We also knew that Mayfield wasn’t going anywhere or he would have been traded at the deadline. It wouldn’t surprise me of Lou told Ilya & especially Mayfield that he was going to get resigned next year before the trade deadline, last season!
The Panthers gave Sergei Bobrovsky a 7 year 70 million dollar deal in July 2019. It looked horrible in the first couple years but it got so much better starting in 2021-22. They are now on the verge of winning their first championship in franchise history.
Continue to disrespect Engvall you guys I'm comments are so clueless xD Toronto was extremely stupid in trading him and Sandin and they will pay for it for along time
Genuinely spit out my coffee seeing the Engvall contract
What did you do when leafs sold him and Sandin on transfer deadline? Threw the whole coffee machine out the window?

Engvall was redundant on the leafs but filled a big hole on the islanders

How do they sit and immediately go “oh 7 years for a third liner that’s totally fine” after just shitting on graves contract which is 6 years 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼

Wahlstrom has to be the guy
I think Engvall just likes watching hockey as much as the rest of us, and on ice is his favorite place to watch.
Would love to see you cover the Bolt’s signings
They already did.

Giving a 29 year old 8x8 is always risky but at the very least, the Isles get 4-5 good years out of Sorokin before his play declines around 33.
@@RandomPlaceHolderName goalies if not hampered by injury can often be solid until around 35

Yeah, $3M ain't terrible for Engvall, but 7 years is hilarious.
