- You’re probably familiar with the use of skulls for Day of the Dead celebrations, but have you ever wondered why? Or have you ever thought “why are Mexicans obsessed with death?” Obsession is a strong word.
We knew the basics: put up an altar to invite ancestors and deceased loved ones’ spirits to visit us in the land of the living once a year. But, there is so much more to this beautiful tradition than we previously thought. There are stories behind the intricate details and symbolism: the skulls, the marigold flowers, and La Catrina Calavera.
In this video, we dive deep into the origin story of La Catrina Calavera, the elements of an ofrenda, and background on Day of the Dead’s history - all while celebrating in the Aguascalientes Festival Cultural de Calaveras.
We chose Aguascalientes to celebrate el Día De Los Muertos 2021 because it is the birthplace of Jose Guadalupe Posada. Jose Guadalupe Posada is the artist of the famous "Calabera Garbancera" who later became a staple to el Día de Muertos.

This video was great! It was moving, entertaining, and fun. I also want to say that I like how intentional you both are about where you go visit. I feel that you both look beyond the touristy things and landmarks of the places you visit. You dive deeper into each place’s history and people. You guys….this video made me so emotional. My Papa was from Aguascalientes. He never went back after immigrating to the US. I am going, finally, in March to visit his querido Aguascalientes’nnnn. I thought I knew something about dia de muertos (I even visited a panteon in Puerto Vallarta on Nov 1, 2019) but you added a whole new dimension. You obviously researched this topic carefully and shared the information in a very interesting and helpful way. To top it off, you made it personal by telling us about your own recent losses. Anna Ware I would like to say something about the origin of the icon of the Mexican Day of the Dead: "La Catrina" by the famous Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada.
The image of a female skeleton is dressed in European outfit from his upper class time. She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the Mexican pre-revolutionary era. So "La Catrina" has become an icon of this Mexican Day of the Dead.

Guys! This was a great video! We have also been living in Mexico for a few months. I have been very touched by Dia de los muertos because of so many losses that I have experienced as well. You gave me all the information I need to have a great alter next year. I find that this is a very cathartic way of dealing with death that celebrates the lives of those we have lost. I was so touched by the memorial at the end as well! I hope we run into y’all in Mexico soon!

Never has anyone explained day of the dead traditions so completely , I feel like I now have a deeper understanding of what it means - I think it’s a beautiful tradition and your explanation of the what takes place during those days was very informative. Thanks for clarifying the misconceptions there is behind the Dia de Muertos. Many people oversimplify and believe that it is a celebration of death but quiet the opposite, it is an acknowledgement of life. It is a remembrance, a tribute and an honor to those who have departed from this earth in going on to a different world.
Instead of trying to explain to people what the significance of this tradition Is, I’ll just refer to them this fascinating video👍

Everything about Dia de Muertos seems to have been thought out in great detail. It is interesting to know that every state can do things just a bit differently. I appreciate how respectful you are thru the whole video. Thank you for sharing pictures of your loved ones, some too young, I was in tears between the pictures and the music. Very touching.
thanks, Cindy. One of the pictures was my father, He was probably one of the younger faces you saw, sitting on a bed on the day of my mom's baby shower when she was pregnant with me. He passed at the age of 53, just last year. Making this video 10 months after his death was an opportunity to continue processing my complicated grief. Nice video. Aguascalientes is where my family is from. My family has a history with the catrina. Posada was an apprentice to the Pedroza printing press. Guadalupe Posada and Trinidad Pedroza were known as jokesters, but they took their satire too far and in 1876 got kicked out of Aguascalientes because they made fun of a man named Jesus Gomez Portugal who was a Cacique (local boss). Many Pedrozas still live in Aguascalientes, but we are no longer in the printing business, the Pedroza family is now known for cheese production. I always find it funny that something that started out as satire has gone this far, but if it helps Aguascalientes I am all for it.

Espero poder visitar Aguascalientes en esos días un próximo año, donde vivo no se celebra tan fervientemente, prácticamente solo se hace concurso de altares entre las escuelas y secundarias y comer pan de muerto jeje, y lo que realmente acostumbra la gente es ir al panteón a visitar a sus difuntos y si acaso llevar alguna ofrenda

You missed to mention that the Mexicas only placed the altar only for four years as this was thought it was the time it took to spirits to travel all of the 9 levels of the Mictlan. The altars was thought was helpful to restore their strength to keep on with their journey.
