What a sound, I respect Mazzy for innovation into the sounds at the time. The eerie yet exciting backdrop instrumental. Can only believe, Roeback and Sandoval were influenced by 'The Doors' music.
Hell's Bells, one of Mazzy Star's finest ever performances -- so totally late-60s tripadelic acid folky rock -- and only 230 Likes with the only other comment whining about pedophilia. Cheez! People have no class and taste in this Brave New Century!
I've now listened to a whole lot of Hope from Opel through Warm Inventions and it's really neat to see how her band-mates and her work. I don't believe I've ever heard a song where she challenged her physical range. And I'm glad. Everything she sings seems at a comfortable key. IMV she's then able to impart tremendous inflection and depth to her voice. Meanwhile, the band complements the lower, more comfortable keys with disciplined, restrained and supportive atmospherics that make best use of Hope's vocal approach. Mesmerizing and hypnotic yet staying out of the ruts for, what...thirty four years. Still entirely fresh and unique suggests her body of work will have some long-term stamina.
The Black Sessions is without a doubt, the most intriguing thing they ever recorded! They seem to have lost some of the mystery and level of intrigue in their more recent work...
Only just got turned onto Mazzy Star/Hope Sandoval, she has a presence, true, but I wish she'd let rip sometimes, impart some emotion, as a contrast to the low key stuff. This song is very like The End, I think it's in the same key too, Dm, could be wrong.....DA.
No, alas. It was a radio session only. I remember that evening, I was listening the radio (France Inter, The Black Sessions of Bernard Lenoir) : a pure delight ! The whole set was marvelous, magical.
Pure genius. This is the best Mazzy performance I’ve ever heard. What a trippy masterpiece!
Even my 11 year old cello playing son is non-stop repeat on this! He imagines it must be what the 60's felt like!
Simply genius❤️

Extremely Doors-esque, which is always a great thing!

She is just being her true self, true to her own heart. Why should she deviate from that?
♥
