I'm from Alaska and the flag actually has a great story. An orphan named Benny Benson won a contest to design the flag when he was 14. 8/5 stars was extremely fair.

@@felixhenson9926 Alaska is the northern most state. It's state motto is "North to the future". Pair this with the general theme of the American flag being the "Stars and Stripes", and you can understand how logical it is to use Ursa Major (or the Big Dipper) on the state flag as this constellation is commonly used to find the North Star. Indeed the North Star can be seen in the upper right hand corner. It's very symbolic for a place nicknamed "The Last Frontier" to feature navigation on it's flag too. In addition to all of this the latin name for the constellation is Ursa Major, which means "Great Bear". Not only does Alaska have three different species of bear (brown bear, black bear, and polar bear), but it has 98% of America's brown bear population specifically. One of the subspecies of brown bear it has is the largest brown bear in the world (that we know of). It's called the Kodiak bear, and together with the polar bear (which Alaska also has), it is one of the two largest living bears in the world.
So yeah, all of that combined is why.

As a Marylander, I was both horrified and amused. Here, the Crabs run wild and the Old Bay flows a-plenty. If anyone even suggested altering our hideously beautiful flag, they would be thrown into the harbor. We don't even know whats in the harbor. Good luck.

Keith, my wife and I love your guys content. When it came to the state of Hawaii's flag, we appreciate that you said your opinion. My wife, being of Hawaiian descent, and I agree with you about the colonialism of the official state flag (especially given the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy by American businessmen and Hawaii only becoming a state because, at the time, the only people allowed to vote were American citizens living in Hawaii, not the Hawaiian people) but your opinion of the red, yellow, green flag, we think, stems from you from not understanding the symbolism of the colors and what the symbol is in the middle so we thought we would explain: green represents the 'aina (which means land), red for the koko (which means blood, as in the blood of the Hawaiian people), and then yellow represents the feathers used in the sacred capes of the 'Ali'i (which is the royalty). The symbol in the middle is of two canoe paddles crossed behind a kahili (which is a royal standard of the Hawaiian monarchy - which is like a European coat of arms but it's made of yellow feathers on a long pole carried by a servant of the King or Queen either ahead of or behind them (or both) in a procession). A flag with palm trees and leis and roasted pigs isn't culturally representative of Hawaii - it's more representative of tourism and colonization - but we get what you meant.

It’s not that he needed to understand the symbolism of the flag, the flag just needs better color balancing. Color harmony. The colors can stay the same but they’re all the same intensity and it can be jarring to the eye.

Keith the "aztec" vibe on the NM flag is a Zia symbol!! It represents the 4 directions, 4 seasons, 4 stages of life, and also the 4 obligations of the Zia people that it comes from!!
For Arizona, the "orange" is actually copper for being the largest producer of copper.

They did, but a library in St. Paul is using the design for their library card. So it lives on!
I saw someone make a comic that it’s still the loon but instead of laser eyes it’s now firing a later from its mouth. The white star is the eye of the loon, the dark blue is the loon with an open mouth, and the light blue is the laser lmao.

I’m from Arkansas and we learned about the state flag and diamond mine probably in 4th grade and then again in 8th grade during Arkansas History class. I’ve never been to the crater of diamonds (it’s more of a dig site than a mine) BUT it’s one of the only sites in the world where the public can dig and is entitled to keep whatever they find! A little girl recently found a 3 carat diamond there!

The Calvert & Crossland is the absolute best visual trainwreck in the entire roster. Maryland, represent! We know our flag is the vexillological equivalent of a horrific necktie, but we simply _do not care_ -- it is glorious in its own way and no other state even holds a candle to its awesome aesthetic.

That was one of Grey's worst videos. He's just way too serious about the dumb flag rules. Though he does acknowledge that New Mexico has the best flag which is objectively correct
@@pyrotechnic96Interesting, it's one of my favourite ones of his (the best one being of course "Hexagons are bestagons"). 🙂 I like the rules, it brings structure to the video I like that it's not just "vibes" which is what Keith's judging felt to me like. I appreciated how CGP Grey explains the reasons behind the designs (I would have never known what the orange/copper star meant in Arizona's flag, for example).

The symbol on the New Mexico flag is a Zia! It has a unique history relating to one of the pueblos in New Mexico, definitely worth a read!

"Battle Born" is on the Nevada flag because we became a state during the Civil War. We supported Lincoln as president so they rushed our statehood to ensure he would be re-elected.

I grew up in South Carolina and the story behind the Palmetto tree is actually pretty cool. The American soldiers in South Carolina used palmetto logs for forts during the Revolutionary War because they're bouncey/springey and helped cannonballs bounce off.

As a native Tennesseean, I’m surprised Keith didn’t know what the three stars are. They represent the three different divisions of the state- middle, east, and west. The circle encompassing the stars represents the divisions uniting as one.

Oregon is the only state flag with a different design on the back from the front. The average score came out to 3.75.
Yeah, but if you're hanging the flag on the wall then you have a choice of if you're going to show the traditional seal or the cute beaver so it's functional, and adorable. I'm keeping the 5/5 score he gave. Haha

Utah’s new flag would have been his favorite for sure based on what he liked about the old one. The new design is so good.

I think that many of these flags (mostly the ones with seals) are recreated for Wikipedia so that they have vector versions. That explains why the Kansas flag, for example, looks like "someone's cousin" did the illustration or why some look like MS Paint. It's just someone trying to recreate it as a vector graphic as best they can, possibly based off of a relatively small or low resolution image.
I'm currently staring at a canvas of Maryland's flag hanging on my wall. It's on my car, too - in sticker form - in the shape of a heart. Our flag, Old Bay, and blue crabs are sacred to us Marylanders. Clearly, it's not for outsiders to understand. We learn to draw it in elementary school. We wave it everywhere. I haven't read the comments yet, but I expect you've pissed off more of us Marylanders, hahahaha.

Marylander here, listennnnn, i adore the medieval vibe our flag gives off.
Everyone else has either stripes or a solid color with a image on it. They start to blend together after awhile.
We stand out among the rest, for better or for worse. 🦀

@@jlwiseman98 sure historically flags have been boring and similar but the new ones coming out like Utah’s that’s coming out in March is beautiful and unique and isn’t boring. You could still pay tribute to the previous flag in just a more aesthetic way. But if every other person outside of Maryland thinks it’s ugly then it’s just ugly. It’s not just a “it’s not my style” type of thing. I’m sure there’s actual professional breakdowns as to why the Maryland flag is just overall bad design

Jokes aside, there are also people outside MD defending it as well, so no, it's definitely a personal taste thing and not universal.
If you wanna convince an entire state to change their recognizable and unique flag, be my guest. You'll be wasting your time, though. There's a reason it's never changed, and at the end of the day it's more important the people living in the state like it more then the people outside the state.
If it hasn't changed up to this point, despite many other states doing so, it must be doing something right.

Maine is getting a new flag. It passed quietly without much recognition. It’s the 1901 flag - the one you liked. The other one you saw with Dirigo was the Merchant/Marine flag.

I myself really hate the "State seal on a field" flags. "A drawing is not a Logo" I tell myself in graphic design, and in flags I say a complex little seal does not read across a football field, it's not doing what a flag is FOR.
Also Utah is going forward with a pretty awesome new design, sad you left it out.

edit: Story goes that the Spanish conquistadors saw Zia pueblo "glowing" in the distance during one of our beautiful sunsets and they mistook it for El Dorado, city of gold.

In 2020, scotus ruled that about half of Oklahoma should be jurisdictionally controlled by the Muscogee Nation, based on the fact the Creek reservation existed before the state did and that was never honored (surprise...). That mostly changes how criminal law works, but that's not new in that it worked like that in all other recognized reservations. Basically, serious crimes involving native perpetrators must be tried in federal courts, lesser crimes to be handled by the Tribal Gvmt. That also means past criminal cases can be challenged/reopened because they were tried in the wrong jurisdiction.

Arizona's "orange" star is actually copper, representing the copper mines. I love our flag, although our state leaves a lot to be desired. Great video!

here as a marylander to defend our flag 😤😤 it’s like broadway acting, way too much up close but it’s gotta be busy in order to be visible by the people at the back of the auditorium. yes the flag is horrifically over-busy up close but flying way up high on a flagpole it actually works, u just see a smudge of yellow and black and red and white out of the corner of your eye and you immediately know what it is. personally i think all flags should be as geometric and busy as maryland’s, plain stripes are so boring and detailed pictures are impossible to see from afar!! maryland pride forever 😤😤😤🦀

Your statement on a flag needing to be geometric and easily seen at a distance is the GOLDEN RULE of flag making. Hop one state over to WV and you can't tell wtf is on that flag. Sure it's beautiful when you lay it out flat on a table and inspect it from 3 feet away but 30ft up on a pole? You might see one section of the laurel on some white, and like an 8th of the seal. Looks like garbage irl. This is why all state seal flags are objectively bad and many have to put their name in bold, capitol letter to have any idea what they are.
