711 here. There is a controversy about when Palm trees were introduced to Las Vegas. It has been commonly reported that palm trees are not native to Las Vegas or Nevada. One theory is palm trees were brought to the Las Vegas Valley in the early 20th century Mormon pioneers. However, the Moapa Piaute have oral history stating palm trees were in the Las Vegas Valley before the Mormons. 100 kilometers or 62 miles northeast of Vegas in the Moapa Valleys there is a native palm that have been growing in that area for 50 million years. This palm species was native to parts of the Western US and Canada but now is only found in warmer spots in the Mojave Desert. No conclusive answer on when the palm ree was introduced to the Las Vegas Valley.
