New to tennis stringing, and I've noticed that there so many fishing (my passion) knots that are much superior to what the tennis world is using. Parnell knot appears to be the same or a slight variation of the double Davy knot and that a slightly modified Palomar knot would do wonders for the tennis world; impossible to unknot and beautiful to look at when done correctly.
Hi Jim, You can prepare it beforehand by placing a scrap piece of string in the grommet before blocking it or you can get another longer piece of scrap string and make a loop around one of the strings blocking the hole. When you want to thread the gut into the hole, you just pull the loop which itself pulls the blocking string out of the way in order to threrad the gut. Either method works but the last one is the easiest:
Wolfy has been stringing his own racquets since 2008 with an inexpensive drop weight machine (US built), with satisfactory results. Now stringing for a number of tennis buddies who are referring other players, and so have decided to upgrade machine to a better (Dutch built) machine. Have been using double half hitch as finishing and starting knots since the beginning; have recently heard about Parnell knot. Query: is this just your finishing knot, and if so, what do you use as a starting knot?
Hi MrWolfy1959 , The Parnell Knot is a finishing knot, however, lots of people do use it as a starting knot and it works fine without damaging the anchor string (something that a double half hitch doesn't). I use a fishing knot as a starting knot, it has 3 loops and the string slides up through the 3 loops and in this way protects the anchor string when it is tensioned. The difference between a starting and a finishing knot is that they tighten up from opposite ends. The starting know cinches from the outside while the finishing knot cinches from the inside.
Richard, a general question..how do you deal with trying to get the "slack" from outside the frame when tying a knot. I try to tie my knot "loose", then pull up slack from frame, tighten half hitch, then tighten the knot to finish it. Obviously more slack you leave more tension loss, but is it that big of a deal?
One tennis stringer on YT says to add 5 pounds to the the last pull to account for what you will lose on tying the knot, so I do that. Just remember to re-set the pull right afterward.
Hi, I'm sorry but I don't have a video showing the starting knot, as we always try and use a starting clamp as opposed to a starting knot. If you join GRSA International, in the A-Z of stringing, there is a design showing the recommended starting knot
When I strung a starting knot, I accidentally pulled too much force which the knot kind of went through the grommet hole. Is this going to affect my playstyle?
Nicolas Ponder Please let me know what you think is missing, check out the ATW video as there is running commentary. This is actually taking it easy, so no speed of either kind LOL
Richard Parnell just out of curiosity, whats the advantage to this particular knot over say a double half hitch? Also a certain stringer by the name of Ron in Sydney was laughing at the fact that this knot was given your name :p
Vincent Chu A Double Half Hitch is the most basic of all the knots. It tightens itself directly around the anchor string and when you pull it tight you can strangle the anchor string and create a weak spot with the risk of breakage. The DHH can also come undone as it it is really two single half hitches, one on top of the other. On the other hand my knot has the two half hitches intertwined so that when you tighten the first half hitch you have a piece of string through it which will prevent it strangling the anchor string. When you close up the second part of the knot it cinches up nicely and won't come undone (I have been using it for over 20 years and have never had it come undone). I am glad that that Ron was laughing, as laughing is good for the soul, so he must find the Parnell Knot range of stringers clothes hilarious (parnell knot dot com) :P
Hahaha, I looked at it and couldn't understand why I was replying to a video I had posted. Then I realised it was me without being me :-) Take care Richard
Your surname is known globally among racket technicians for this simple but very effective knot. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words :-))
Thanks Richard, I've been using your knot for many years. It's neat and it never fails :-)
+DMcTyke exactly what I think :-))
This video summed up - I’m Richard Parnell and I’m going to teach you how to tie a Parnell knot. Step 1: Tie the Parnell knot.
Thanks for making this video. Very helpful!
About to tie my first Parnell knot in a day or two 🤞🏻
What makes this better than the Wilson pro knot?
That knot was shown in a USRSA newsletter back in 1980.
This knot gets opened sometimes.. I had experienced several times.. What I should supposed to do?
Thanks for the video!
Hello Richard. The second time you put the string through the first knot. Greatings from Richard
Simple and works like a charm. I double-knot mine to practice technique and identify my work.
Thank you, sir.
How do you deal with 2 poly strings blocking a hole on the outside of the frame when trying to feed a gut string through said blocked hole.
Hi Jim,

Richard Parnell Thanks for the help.
Use a tiny bit of wax or, in an emergency, use a tiny bit of hand gel. Put it on your awl and gently push through.

can you show the starting knot?

what's the song in the background?
wow thanks dude
Thank u so much
J'attendais by Celine Dion (Live a Paris) :-)
Thanks
you are the person who invented this knot? Wow!
When I strung a starting knot, I accidentally pulled too much force which the knot kind of went through the grommet hole. Is this going to affect my playstyle?
No, but it isn't technically a starting knot.....
It's the knot I use!
🙏🎉😎🤙
I love when people have been doing something for 30 years and expect us to see how it works when it’s our first time and they do it fast as hell
I know right, I hate it when that happens 😉
Hahahah, touché
be nice to slow down a bit.
just watch it at half speed mate :p
your speed is making you leave out many little things beginners would find useful. I'm not talking about the other speed you seem to be on. lol

This guy has no clue how to tie a Parnell knot.
HaHaHa ...... This is the best comment so far :-)))
Richard Parnell 🤣
I'll show him how to do the Ramsay knot. How audacious is he. Like someone else hasn't already done a knot like that?
It's like looking in a mirror lol
Hahaha, I looked at it and couldn't understand why I was replying to a video I had posted. Then I realised it was me without being me :-) Take care Richard
You too cousin lol
TOCAYOS! ahhahaha
