A great way to string a racquet using the ATW pattern but making it look more aesthetic by limiting the runs of string on the outside of the frame. The Parnell block, a very useful tool that protects the string and the frame and in conjunction with the Parnell Pad means 100% protection for the frame. #parnellpadpro #parnellblock @richardparnellknot

Stringing a tennis racquet with 4 knots using the Parnell Loop
This method is almost the same as the Yonex Loop for badminton rackets except that it doesn't tension the two outside mains together (double pull) but rather adds extra tension on the two outside mains that are tensioned individually to make sure that the outside main is tight and the length of string to get to the tie off hole is minimized
How to string a racquet with the ATW Parnell, as used on the ATP tour
Stringing a racquet with the Around The World Parnell is perfect for racquets with 2 crosses below the outer main. The new Pure Drive for instance is a perfect example. This modification does away with the long run of string that goes from last main to bottom cross and back up to last short side main.

How to string a racquet with an ATW Universal By Richard Parnell
The Universal ATW (Around The World) method for stringing racquets, as used on the ATP Tour. This particular ATW works well with all types of patterns, although I think that it works best with the 16x19 patterns of the Pure Drive and similar frames. This the most used ATW on the ATP tour. The Wilson stringing teams use it at the US Open, Australian Open, Miami and Beijing and it is widely used ...

Yes I am a fan of ATW method myself also a stringer. And it really actually help the string to be more playable for 2 more hours. (usually i cut my string no more than 5 hours of play or 2 weeks). One question is for so many years when poly become the main trend, and also low tension, is it still necessary to do head to throad cross especially on Babolat pure aero and pure drive. Especially when we tension less than 40 lbs. Remind me if i was wrong that i clearly remembered back then we can download string pattern on Babolat site and they do really have a pattern with 1-piece for pure drive and pure aero (or aero pure drive) with cross just starts at throat. And also Babalat rackets always be more ellipse than other oval rackets so especially make it really do can be string throat to head. I am a fan of pure drive back then and follows aero pure drive then pure aero almost buy every or every next generation of pure aero and i really don't want to change to another racket. I was thinking to switch to pure strike that was born with head to throat and can make my weekly restring a little bit easier. But I already notice after i've been play PA so long i cannot hold a racket with traditional throat section anymore, i can even remember it spent me like two years to fully get used to the throat section for my standby position. I've been reduced tension lower than 40 lbs now so is it really matter for the difference of 2 piece/1 piece/head to throat/throat to head. Yes i find the old string patten www.scribd.com/doc/304688423/BaboLat-Stringing-Pattern
Rich, need more of these mate.
You are always the undisputed N1 !!!
G'Day, What determines if I can string 1 piece with out having to do a bottom cross right out the gate? Just string the mains and starting the crosses at the top then working down. Thanks
G'Day, if the mains end at the throat then you will need to use ATW for a 2 knot restring. If the mains end at the head you are already at the tip where you want to be so no need for ATW
@@richardparnellknot Thanks, That makes sense.
Thanks
Hi Richard. So to clarify. This 'modified' ATW is for racket with 4 x 2 (8) holes in the throat/ mains end in throat..... and the regular ATW is for the rackets with 3 x 2 (6) holes in throat/ mains ending in the head? And meassure short side/SS for modified ATW for 16 x 19 is: 7 mains + 3 crosses and 1 x distance to the stringer. And meassure short side/SS for 18 x 20 is + 1 mains. ?
This modified ATW is for patterns that the mains end at the throat and there are 2 crosses below the last main. Patterns with 1 cross below the last main can be done perfectly with a normal Universal ATW. The measurements you have mentioned are correct 🙂👍
Great stuff. I would have wished to see how you meassure the amount of string needed, before starting stringing.
Each person measures differently, but I usually use wingspan and hands. Some people use the frame to measure and just count out the string needed for the pattern.
Is ATW better than 2 string string job?
Hi Benjamin, that is a matter of opinion. I prefer using ATW over 4 knots as there are less variables, meaning that each string that goes to a knot will have a different tension than the other that are just tensioned and clamped. But that is my personal opinion and if someone else prefers 4 knots, their opinion is as valid as mine 🙂
@@richardparnellknot One thing I noticed is that starting in each end on the cross, with the ATW, then the strings kinda seperates a bit (valley and hill) for maybe easier weaving. Tha tplus the one ahead saves time.... and 2 knots also safe some time compared to have to make 4. DO you mainly do ATW for the pro's/ on the tour?
@@richardparnellknot The starting clamp I bought is slipping and therefore unusable. What starting clamp would you recommend?
I would recommend the parnell Tech clamps, they are the ones I use. They don’t slip and have lasted me ages with a lot of use. You can find them at www.parnellknot.com
We only do ATW if the player asks for 2 knots otherwise we use 4 knots 😉
You are using Syn Gut for the demonstration. Is that because its easier to string with? Is it good normally to play with in a Pure Aero (Aero Pro Drive) or better with poly/Co-poly?
I used a synthetic gut on this video as it was easier and also what I had at hand when I made it. Depends on your style of play and level for the choice of string. No racket has only 1 choice of string construction, depends on the player's style and swing. The syn gut is easy to play with, doesn't generate a lot of spin, but is easy on the arm. 😊
wow thanks dude

Hola disculpa!

Why, whenever I watch these videos is the string they're working with perfectly limp with no memory whatsoever?
If my memory serves me well, it doesn't always, I was using a braided multifilament for this squash racket. Multifilaments don't tend to have much coil memory and I'm sure I took it off of a roll so... that would be the reason. In my other videos I also tend to use a multi or a very soft mono 🙂
hi can you do and add a video how to change the grommets on a puma boris becker winner or super racket? regards
DEATH by starting clamps...what a joke...stringbed is DAMAGED
Thanks for your input, so according to you every stringer who strings on GS stringing teams is doing it wrong? 🤣🤣🤣
If you have a bad and faulty starting clamp... you could be correct.
can you show the starting knot?
Hi, I'm sorry but I don't have a video showing the starting knot, as we always try and use a starting clamp as opposed to a starting knot. If you join GRSA International, in the A-Z of stringing, there is a design showing the recommended starting knot
I'll show him how to do the Ramsay knot. How audacious is he. Like someone else hasn't already done a knot like that?

Dear Mr. Parnell, I commented in one of the video Head posted of you teaching how to string a racket. I commented that the string bed stiffness will not be affected by how much length of string you pull. And you answered me. However, that video has been deleted and reposted by Head, so I could not read your full answer now. May I ask you to answer me again for the same question? And I have another question that I wanna ask you, I’m which way should I twist natural gut when I stringing? The same way how gut fiber was twisted so that those fiber are tighter with each other or the other way? Thank you very much. Best regard.
Hi, Please repost the question on the HEAD video and I will answer on there 😊😊 The video was repaired as there was an issue with the sound, that’s why your question disappeared 🤷
10:30 - 16:23 Audio stopped. What’s happening?
Thank you for this information Richard. Loved watching the tutorial and learning the tips. I have only ever really strung badminton rackets and it is good to learn how to do tennis, in this case, and squash as well.
Hi Richard! It's really great video. Just wanna ask where I can get the parnell block? Also could you tell me how to measure the strings? Especially for reels string, because we know every rackets has different head size.
Thank you 🙂 The Parnell Block is available from either www.parnellknot.com and there is even a bundle there with a discount or through www.grsa-international.com where there is an exclusive block in GRSA colours and the new double sided Pad. Either one works 🙂👍 Have a great day
Hi Richard I have been stringing now for about 12 years and mostly I string badminton racquets and also quite a few squash racquets but very few tennis racquets. I have always strung the crosses on every racquet no matter what type from top down as you suggest as that was the way I was taught to do it. However on some badminton stringing forums the consensus is that for badminton stringing the crosses should always be strung from the bottom up so not what I have been doing all these years. What are your thoughts on this? Is the advice in your video only applicable to tennis or would you say it also applies to squash and badminton or are the specialist badminton stringers correct and that in the case of badminton only the crosses should be done bottom up as the default method to use? I would love to hear your thoughts.
Hi Graham, Good question !! With badminton, the crosses are strung bottom up as a preference. As you know squash can be done both ways with top down again the preferred method. So yes, my comments on this video are mainly aimed at tennis or squash but not badminton.
@@richardparnellknot Thanks Richard. I think I shall have to switch my badminton crosses stringing method to bottom up.
Hello Richard, hope all is well. Do you like the Head machine as much as the Baiardo? Thanks
Yes, I do. I have a lot of experience with both machines and both are excellent machines and easy to use 🙂
Awesome. Last year I got a Baiardo and love it. Did you put the extra lbs on the 4 outside pulls? Thanks as always.
I see the answer to the question I asked. No, because you only add the extra kg for the knots. 👍
Is it incorrect to do a atw pattern, and have to weave the crosses from the bottom up? If so, how do I avoid that situation? Thank you.
@@jeffcoffey8970 Hi Jeff, The ATW is designed to string the crosses from the head down towards the throat on a racket where the mains end at the throat and you are using a single piece of string. Any racket that the mains end at the throat can be strung ATW, any racket that the mains end at the head doesn't need ATW and can be strung top down without any modifications 🙂👍
Thank you, sir.
is a blade whit pattern 18-20?
What do you mean by hard weave?
The hard weave is when you go over a raised main and under a lowered main while installing the crosses. This happens on every other cross during an ATW.

Hey Richard! Hope you’re doing well. I was watching Montreal and a rain delay stopped the action so I just poked around stinging videos and look what I found. Haven’t touched a racquet in nearly 6 years since we moved to Winnipeg. Good ‘seeing’ you!
What a great explanation...! Hi Richard, do you have any idea why when I string a Dunlop Black Widow string sometimes get twisted??? Mostly at the 3 last crosses. Thank you for your answer.
Hi @Khalid Khan, certain shaped strings do twist if you pass the whole string through and then pull across the whole string bed. If you pass a small amount of string and then pull that through and so on, then the last crosses through shouldn't twist. Definitely a way of stopping natural gut twisting as well 😉 Thanks for your kind words 👊

whats the best knot for badminton racket
Thank you! But, some of the newer designed frame grommet holes are larger than the old school racquet holes. Does that make a difference on this type of string twist lock method?
New to tennis stringing, and I've noticed that there so many fishing (my passion) knots that are much superior to what the tennis world is using. Parnell knot appears to be the same or a slight variation of the double Davy knot and that a slightly modified Palomar knot would do wonders for the tennis world; impossible to unknot and beautiful to look at when done correctly.
Hello Richard, another wonderful video, thank you. I am going to practice the ATW technique now. 👍
Hola Richard!!!
OMG! I come back to this video and you still blow my mind. Fabulous!
Thanks Jeff, Glad to hear that you find it helpful, happy stringing :-) we have some great online courses (with certification) over at www.grsa-international.com , check them out, might be of interest :-))
