The beauty of Bill Whelan's music is it can be adapted to any genre or culture. I've heard many renditions of Reel Around The Sun including classical, jazz, rock and now 'oriental'. This is MAGNIFICENT and I'm sure Mr Whelan will agree.
As a fan of the Riverdance from China, tears just burst while listening to this... Erhu and Pipa! So proud of the cultural combination and appreciation!
As a fan of both Riverdance and 12 Girls Band, I really appreciate this as it is such a great arrangement and interpretation. I only wish that they would've brought in traditional Chinese drummers for the beats. Now THAT would have been EPIC.
I love the "V" formation in the opening shot. It shows the individual parts each erhuist must perform to bring the piece together. This concert was exceptional in every way: staging, lighting, setting, costumes & ultimately performance. Brava, ladies!
Barbara Cataldo totally agree - the videographer was great as she/he knew exactly when to switch to a performer and focus While everyone like ZS or YY, I think Zhan Lijun made a big difference to the band - I like all their performances and collected about 80 videos so far - definitely want to know what they are up to now, as it has been 3+ years since I saw any updates
Madukar Madippatla- Where in the world were you able to find 80 videos of this group? I consider myself a big fan of the original group but have only be able to find 10 videos. You're very lucky to own so many.
Barbara Cataldo - I subscribed to 12 tongtech, edux17, dizierhupipa and Tam Hoang also to collect most of the videos - I agree this concert is their best - I also have their Live at Budokan DVD and Eastern Energy CD so that I can listen to them almost everyday - fantastic group featured in Time Magazine as 12 Roses
Very entertaining presentation .. how long are the time taken to skillfully play traditional music instrument Chenese, especially virtuoso 'pipa' played by the lovely Miss Zhang Shuang musicians ..
Riverdance did a show in Beijing, all that is missing the dance troupe from Riverdance to do their taps to the music hopefully they will do something with these talented asian women. HAVE THE Riverdance dance troupe on stage doing their taps.
At 3:03, it sounds so much like japanese/chinese/Korean Music, more so then Gaelic. To me, that is pretty amazing :)! Nevertheless, this group is phenomenal :)
Yes that instrument and erhu also sound sooo typically “Chinese” to me, perfect. Ironically, it’s not even traditional Irish music, but modern musiccomposed by Bill Whelan, for a stage show, in the genre or the vein of trad Irish, so it’s no wonder it really works; the scales, the arpeggios, the drones are what really make it effective.
I got that this piece was a Irish folk song, and with the instruments, I didn't know which nationality they were from, hence me just writing all three down, I didn't want to say they were from Japan when they are from China, Im sorry if I didn't clarify well.
I found this channel that featured some Alive 2 music - they are all minute or less in length but gives you good glimpse of how good the group and mastery over their instruments - ruclips.net/p/PLB1F2757FB1A71B67

I’ve never heard any music like this. Any music they playing is greater than art.

This was always my favorite song from the Riverdance CD. So awesome to see it performed this way.
jakashadows indeed. :)

Erhu can make any tune sound “Chinese” due to its natural tone, but this really works perfectly!

优酷……
Su nombre en español sería "Carrete alrededor del Sol" o corrijanme porfavor.
Wow ! just incredible, the erhu has only 2 strings while the violin has 4 strings. Guess they have grease lightnings fingers. Lol.

The Erhu is better than the Violin. It has a human voice quality to it. Sounds like an angel's voice:-)
Why are there thirteen women on stage?
There's actually 13 members but usually there tends to be 12 on stage at a time unless it's big arrangements like these.
Baker's dozen :D
