I think this whole comment thread needs to look up the phonetic spelling, as both are considered correct and if you look at the origin of the word, the way Linus pronounces is historically correct as English did not originate in the Americas believe it or not. "a·gainst /əˈɡenst/"
If you think about that, imagine the pro level integrated graphics like the Iris Pro 580. I can imagine in 5-10 years integrated GPUs will be what most people are gaming with.
Performance per liter holds 0 value , its a crappy graph just to sell on origins "huge performance" when in reality its nothing special. They just put normal hardware in their own case.
OBJECTION! The SilverStone Sugo SG05-Lite Mini-ITX case was available 2013 with 10.78 liter. The slide at 3:24 states that the 2016 machine with 10.6 liter hast 10 times more performance per liter than the 2013 machine. But, while it is true that there was no So. 2011 ITX mainboard available in 2013 ( afaik ), there were So. 1055 ITX boards and the i7-3770K achieves 672 points which is a third of the values I find online for the 6950X and a third and a half for the 2123 points you got. And yes the SG05 was able to fit the MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming 3G just fine So on said graph the setup above would have 57 to 66 instead of 20 points. Maybe there were other things that I missed that disqualify it as an "enthusiast" grade setup and I only did it for the one value to check it. The huge gap made me a bit suspicious. If you just wanted to set the scope for the best available CPU to fit inside then yes your values are correct, but for the best performance per liter you'd have to select an So. 1055 setup. Though, you could also have tested with a Dan Cases A4-SFX which would have pushed the ratio more to your stats again, but I don't know if it can even dissipate the heat from an 6950X with a 48mm cooler.
+LinusTechTips Yes, I also said so in my comment. Still there were So. 1055 solutions that would have provided more performance per liter. ( Read the whole comment :3 )
Preproto they didn't compare it to the performance per litre of bigger modern systems either. But yes. There have been SFF cases before and they basically suffered the same issues as these. You cannot add optical drives, IO is limited and expandability is not a thing for them. This is IMO only interesting for people who do wish to use them as HTPC / expensive console and do mind the looks of it. I don't see the point of a tiny case on my desk, the PC is under the desk regardless. And if I want a clean desk an AIO is the better option
SFX cases did exist in those years, but Mini-ITX motherboards for the enthusiast level chipsets did not. They could have stepped down to a consumer grade board, but then it wouldn't be the most powerful system possible at the time. Therefore, the only options were mid-tower cases that support full size ATX motherboards!
Well if only one of them is small... this is a pointless comparison and as George said only so people who don't know will buy it. Apples to Oranges my friends.
Craftman2917 It's cool to think about - imagine if, in 10 years, desktop machines with full desktop cards could fit in a pocket - shit'd be crazy (crazy awesome)
This sponsor is the worst you have had in a long time. A few months ago, you created a itx build which would destroy this. But they just made you ignore your own work, good job to bowing for the money LTT
This was kinda bad. I don't really mind sponsored videos too much but this one rubbed me the wrong way. Absolutely no balencing opinions just positive, positive, positive.
SnaG I feel like it is fair, the hardware is anything you could buy on your own. The combination of the hardware in an case ORIGIN designed. It's also used to make a comparison to other computers in the past to make a point.
+matttzerminator you can't even buy the a4-sfx right now. It's a very small indie project and not representative of what people are actually using. I love crazy diy builds as much as the next person, but MOST people don't crowd fund limited production runs :) -LS
After watching the coverage on the A4-SFX I started researching small form factor PCs and ultimately wound up buying someones pre-order of the A4-SFX and I'm super excited. Seems like a lot of people think this is some kind of "sell out" because they are showing off the sponsors PC, but honestly I think people need to lighten up about it. Instead of just doing a review about how neat, this new system is, they had a creative idea to show how far SFF PCs viability has come. If you don't like the case don't buy it, but SFF is a niche within another niche and this "mainstream" option will sell way more volume by sheer name recognition of Origin over the A4 or Ncase and that's just fine. If you think it's silly to buy an "overpriced" complete system, fine go build your own and design a wicked SFF case, but not everyone has the time to do that and just want a tiny powerful PC and this is likely what they will end up getting.
it makes because he wants to showcase a product in an unique manner to gain ad contracts and also steal some followers from jayz2cents with "performance per liter" title. (kidding, or maybe not. take it as you want. just like yo mama!)
So what is the point? Comparing fullsize towers with significantly larger volumes to a case as small as the Chronos' doesn't make much sense. All it shows is that by having better hardware in a significantly smaller footprint, an arbitrary unit of performance goes up.
THANK YOU , it was as idiotic as it gets , that graph was crafted to make this pc seem something special when in reality it's not , just high end hardware put into a case, no custom made motherboard to make it smaller or anything , you can probably do a better job building one yourself and saving 500$ or more.
George k Pretty much my point, I could remove the hardware from this case and put it in something like an Enthoo Evolve ATX or worse yet a Air 740 and instantly the "performance per liter" takes a MAJOR nose dive to the point it is somewhere along the lines of the several year older PC's or hell put the most budget PC you could build today (FULL PC, no cheating with a raspberry pi or other similar device) using NEW parts in the Air 740 and have numbers close to that of the 2006 PC in all likely hood, or alternatively I'm willing to bet with as small as the typical CELLPHONE is the "performance per liter" is HIGHER on the phone then this build, SIZE MEANS NOTHING when you are looking at PERFORMANCE and it was clearly done to make this thing look better then it is, don't get me wrong it's a GREAT build, but these parts would perform just as well if not BETTER if placed into a larger case that would be less prone to thermal throttling.
At 2:37, the text showing the years of each case doesn't match the corresponding config. The corsair C70 and NZXT H440 are swapped, the H440 being the 2013 build not the 2010 build
I'd be curious how much power you could cram in a trashcan mac pro's design. Two 1080s and the 10core maybe? More performance in half the size of this case with the PSU still internal. That's kinda the restriction with standardised parts.
The Original Clorox Bleach MSI Vortex is bigger, uglier and has some PCIe lane issues. That said, temperatures are mixed. If you run everything at once on the Mac Pro you hit some pretty high temps however it gets better temperatures than the Vortex if you are running a balanced load, or just maxing the CPU. Depends what you're after The vortex for me is like saying I should buy the Level 10 GT if I like the Level 10. Arguably they look similar and the GT could do the job, but, it doesn't have the same internal design and damn it is uglier kinda defeating the point.
Note to editor: When Linus is talking about Cinebench, show the Cinebench scores, when he's talking about CPUMark, show the CPUMark scores. It's really disorientating and inconvenient if it's shown jumbled around relative to what he's talking about, not in 'sync' so to speak. And don't fly through the scores so fast, give it a couple of seconds. And when you show relative performance, you might want to highlight/show what it is actually relative to.
How is this a comparison of performance per liter when you're comparing high performance pcs of the past in standard sized cases vs a high performance pc a company has managed to cram into a small form factor? You're just assuming pcs of the past were unable to be made in small form factors which is a stretch.
***** any incorrect use of a word = incorrect grammar. Refering to the extra 3 liters as a whole "package" can sound okay but they're plural which means that they should use "seem".
I think so. It might not be, but if it did happen recently, it wouldn't surprise me if it's because people kept calling them sellouts for mentioning any brand at all in any video.
This lil guy's built like a brick shit house. Super strong and kind of dense for its size. It also fits nicely in a duffel bag with accessories. I got mine equipped with a GTX 1080ti, an I7 8700k and 32gb of RAM. As far as I can tell (and I've had mine for some time now) thermal throttling hasn't been an issue at all due to it's small form factor. Noise isn't an issue either. Is it the most cost efficient portable PC? At around $3,379 with soundbar and shipping included, probably not. But hey if you got the cash and like the customization options, why not? If not and you still want the small form factor but don't mind the lack of customization you can always pick up a Corsair One for a bit less.
I'm sitting here with an i7 920 and an Asus rampage 3 extreme. All I have to do is get a good cooler and overclock the shit out of the i7. 75,9€ for the cpu and 142€ for the mainboard.

I thought you were to compare small form factor PCs from the past, but you ended up using standard ATX PCs, as if there were no ITX motherboards in 2010. So, I think it's a bit unfair, saying that today's PCs are better in terms of perf. per volume, because you could have used a 4770k with an ASUS Maximus Impact board, and that would have been a lot smaller, hence more competitive in the tests.
You must realize that the majority of the viewers are more accustomed to FPS and are more familiar with it. It's like a youtuber with a mainly American audience using the metric system.
It can't be stressed enough how far mini-ITX motherboards have come in recent years. I think one of the biggest innovations is putting the VRM on a perpendicular daughter-board. Not an inch of space is being wasted these days, while with older mini-ITX boards they were very limited in how much horsepower they could push before becoming very unstable. Improved SFX PSUs are obviously another major factor in why small form factor PCs are so much better now. One of my favorite builds is a Silderstone gaming machine I built for my brother a while back. It's about the size of a shoebox but it can still hold its own well against even a water-cooled desktop like mine. If you don't care about expansion cards, multiple HDDs, Blu-Ray burners and all that jazz, Mini-ITX is a great option.
Why nor find sff chassis from back then? There's no control in this experiment, especially when you compare three big cases with the new sff Origin PC. What was the point of that metric?
When it comes to NVIDIA GPUs, one of the contributors to the performance-per-litre increase is the architectural evolution from the RIVA 128 [fixed function sans HW T&L] and the GeForce 256 [fixed function with HW transform and vertex lighting] to the Pascal architecture [programmable GPU capable of general purpose computing and unified memory].
I could not tell wtf I was looking at 2:58 had to go back and look at it fora while on pause. Weird optical illusion made me think the camera was on top left of the case instead of bottom right.
The $40 SilverStone Sugo SG13 you covered before on LTT (that I now have as my 6700k/RX480 build) seems way better than any of these other cases. Not only is it tiny in terms of volume, the more cube-like shape than these taller and thinner boxes makes it a lot more practical/portable. I've been carrying mine in a backpack when flying around Europe recently, I doubt I'd have gotten any of the cases featured in this video onto a plane...
I notice a lot of enthusiast gaming builds recently have a liquid cooled CPU cooler but not many do GPU anymore. Is it worth it if you aren't going to mega overclock the GPU? My MSI 970 with the twin frozer set up always did good with thermals with the standard MSI overclock. Getting ready to do a new build and was throwing around the liquid cooling idea but I'm not sure it's worth it outside a self contained CPU cooler. Thoughts?
Hey Linus, I know you put the in the paid content thing so good job there, but really was putting it in tiny text, in white, on a white background, really the best way to do it lol .
Linus you should totally do a vid experimenting with at load cpu temps with high end cpu's through the last decade with a consistent cooler, would be an awesome vid!
Something is wrong here... 2:39 I see the years. From left to right, Corsair C70 Vengance (2013), Antec P182 (2006) and NZXT H440 (2010). But then it changed. 2:41 Now Corsair is 2010, NZCT is 2013 and Antec is still 2006. Also, I'd like to see 2013, 2010 and 2006 SFF builds, not full size, in order to compare performance per liter. Otherwise, it's just nonsense, imo.
hi i watched this after gamer nexus review where they recommended origin address the thermal issues by putting holes into the window. i see that yours has the holes. is that custom or did that come from origin like that ? planning on getting one of these systems.
Hey Linus if I want to build a new computer and I get the OS running on the computer can I connect my old hard drive into the computer also already have an operating system on that hard drive so will it interfere?
Computer size matters to two kinds of people. The mobile user, and the enterprise user. The mobile user cares about weight and size for travel, and the enterprise user cares because he only has so large of a room to hold so many servers. Tiny desktop PC's is all about form more than function which is a very niche consumer base.
linus question here that has nothing to do with this video but would u recommend the Asus mx27h monitor it says 5ms response time is that good enough i play ps4 mainly if not then whats a better monitor? i want an ips panel btw anything better that u recommend would be good
lol i customized some version of this chronos build on the origin homepage... the fact that it costs around 80% more than when i would build it myself... is breathtaking...
Hey linus, my desktop isnt working. Whenever I connect it to a monitor, it says no signal but the computer turns on my fans spin and my mother board light turns on. I know the monitor is not the problem as I connected my monitor my my laptop and it works perfectly. Any fixes or tips?
Remove the plug from your PSU and hold your PC's power button down for 1 minute. This will reset your settings. Plug your PSU back in, turn your PC on and the monitor should work. Let me know how it goes.
I want to build a mini ITX rig but I can't decide on a case. I have my eyes in the Silverstone RVZ02 because I really like the dust filters and tall thin rather than short wide dimensions. If anyone has a good recommendation for a thin mini ITX case with 2-4 dust filtered ventilation spots, please let me know! I quite liked the NCase and Dan Case but they have no dust filters which really bugs me. Thanks for reading!
Can someone explain to me why all of those "super duper small or l33t pre-built" pc's GPU's have STOCK cooling? Why???? Is it form factor or is it some background deal we can trace?
cryohellinc the stock cooling isnt meant to be the best cooling solution. the purpose of the blower style cooler shroud is to intake cool air in one place, and exhaust it out the back, sacrificing cooling, for the ability to put this hot air out the back, rather than in the small form factor case, which would result in affecting the temps of other components undesirably. it's simply the best for this situation
I got a small form factor PC. it's really good in my opinion, but I could hardly fit a 1080 in it and I can only use 1 graphics card. I think a small form factor PC might be better as a secondary PC that you use for recording with an elgato and video editing
interesting, but this is all done on 2016 software right? Would be interesting for each of them to be running the OS of the time and benchmarking tools of the time, although then the scores might not relate at all.
Hey Linus, I have been watching almost everyone of your videos for around a year now and love them all!! I am from Toronto and always get very excited when I see a product or website you are promoting only to find out that it is a US company and all of the pricing is in USD!! Can you please do a segment on best bang for your buck Canadian retailers?!?!?!? :D (or something of the sort :P)
I dont care at all for small PCs, my current PC is in a core x9 case from thermaltake. What I really do like is the comparison against older hardware. I would like to see more of this.
I'm sure Linus has spent the majority of his adulthood cramming his tiny hardware into highly questionable boxes.

is it just me? When I think of 10 years ago, I think of 2000 not 2006. lol time flies
최영재 i feel the same way! 2008 doesnt seem that long ago, for example
최영재 dude same, when someone says "remember 3 years ago" I think of 2007 lol
When someone says "10 years ago" I still think of the 90s.
nfsm654 same!

... so let's take a look then, at what we're putting it up agayhnst
He's making a joke about Linus's pronunciation...

online geeks never fail to amuse me lool "canadianism" damn

So the integrated graphics in my 6600k were better than a full on gaming pc in 2006... makes you think what power will be in the future
IggyDoesStuff ikr. The integrated graphics on Skylake are pretty darn impressive.
Nick Nock Fun Fact: Broadwell CPUs have the most powerful integrated graphics
just the gpu
just looked up performance of that , and man it's impressive.
If you think about that, imagine the pro level integrated graphics like the Iris Pro 580. I can imagine in 5-10 years integrated GPUs will be what most people are gaming with.
I have no idea what the fuck happened in this video.
Intel+Origin: Make a video making us look good.
Linus: Look how much better Origin is compared to a PC from 2006.
Basically it was a buy a ORIGIN PC they are great look at these stats we have oh and we where paid to make this video by ORIGIN PC
Performance per liter holds 0 value , its a crappy graph just to sell on origins "huge performance" when in reality its nothing special. They just put normal hardware in their own case.

How come that at 0:30 the front USB-ports appear to be blavk 2.0 ports and five seconds later they're 3.0?
Mac Doodles that's just the lighting in the B-roll, they never changed colour it's just harder to make out.
Execuor Ah you're right. Watched it on my phone the first time so that didn't help either, thanks for pointing that out.
Tisk tisk tisk. English grammar mistake at 1:10. "The extra 3 liters *seems* to have been put to good use"
***** any incorrect use of a word = incorrect grammar. Refering to the extra 3 liters as a whole "package" can sound okay but they're plural which means that they should use "seem".
Geoff Peterson your missing the point, lighten up bro

I never noticed the small text at the bottom left corner saying "Contains sponsored content" before. Is that a new thing?
I think so. It might not be, but if it did happen recently, it wouldn't surprise me if it's because people kept calling them sellouts for mentioning any brand at all in any video.
CodeBit Actually, not really, they've had it for a bunch of stuff in the past, their projector giveaway video from Lenovo notably had this
For me I'd rather see that than an obnoxious transition to an ad that takes up a 3rd of the video.
Kei Angelus the ads let them stay objective and unbiased (well, more so than otherwise)
the whole video was an ad and i didnt sub to linus for this shit
Don't you know that size doesn't matter? It's how you use it.
The sponsored content is excellently integrated with a well made, interesting video. Thanks guys!
how does it hold up against the raspberry pie though?
What was the conclusion? I did not understand this video ! >_
I've built several ITX and SFF PCs but I always moved back to mid-towers because I just like having more options and no compromise.
Moral of the story: x58 and x79 are still kickass platforms to build a modern gaming pc.
Gaius Trollius X58 with a $70 X5670 running at 4ghz.. Hardest part is finding good boards at good prices
I have X5670 @ 4.05GHz and Asus P6X58D-E. I paid 65€ for cpu and 90€ for mobo
Gaius Trollius I got an i7-980X + MSI Big Bang XPower mobo for free a while back. It's still an awesome chip!
I'm sitting here with an i7 920 and an Asus rampage 3 extreme. All I have to do is get a good cooler and overclock the shit out of the i7. 75,9€ for the cpu and 142€ for the mainboard.
+Gaius Trollius 75€ for i7-920?!
2:30 look at the 3 monitors and the mobo underneath the leftmost monitor is mine aka intel dw35jo
Happy Thanksgiving Lienus! Hue hue hue
Epicnewyorker You're late.
Epicnewyorker not in canada
i see what you did there
But the Hue blew up someones PC......
no it didn't, The idiot "blew up" their own pc by using a wrong cable.
Linus, I am literally flabbergasted at how great of an idea this video is.
You did it bruh.
SHIT THAT THING HAS A TITAN X!!!!!! DAAAAAAAMMMMNNNNN!!!!!!
TITAN X(P)
:P
Sumeet Mitroo lol
Sumeet Mitroo
crap I missed up but still it is a titan
In case you didn't know the Titan X (Pascal, AKA XP) is the latest and greatest GPU money can buy. $1200

I know
That XFX 8800GTS @2:30 was my very first graphics card back in 2007. I wish i hadn't sold it back in 2009 to buy an 4870...
please donate this pc to me, it'll be better off with me rather than rusting in your warehouse
Simplicius A. lmao it was a paid advertisement so he has to send it back
+gravi1ty nvm then, was I wrong?
seems reasonable clarence, but gravi1ty's violently charged comment is admittedly very persuasive too. not sure what to believe.
He keeps some things and returns some things. Differs based on the client.
if it was on his contract then yes, he does. have you ever heard of something called a "review unit"?
Happy thanksgiving Linus media group, I'm using my amd cpu collection to cook most of my food!
I wasnt listening at this point; titan x or titan xp??
Titan X pascal
Ah good

How does LTT make such good videos? They put out one a day and they generally seem to get a lot of work put into each. Love this channel.
Nice video, Linus and crew, and I hope you know that we appreciate the hard work that the whole do to make LTT
Linus likes small things.
IF you get what l mean ;D
Eepu I get it...
Sam Roselli savage
he's into tight places. 3 kids deep into them.
at 4:26 you shouldn't have done 0.2 fps you should have done 5 spf (seconds per frame)

Will linus respond to me if I am this early? ??
I pray for you

In around 2004 a friend's Dad had a Shuttle PC equipped with a 9800 Pro and it tore Doom 3 a new one. Awesome system, awesome card.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST ??? JEEEESUS where the fuck is the price I have to go to the deep web to find it
You can't afford it.
Psyco The comment matches your Pic.
Psyco small loan of million dollars plus some extra
Psyco you go to the website and configure it yourself. The cheapest price is around $1100
+George 1100 (sniperboygeorge plays) Braindead? An i7 6950X goes for $1,700 and a Titan XP for $1,500.
Why nor find sff chassis from back then? There's no control in this experiment, especially when you compare three big cases with the new sff Origin PC. What was the point of that metric?
Origin PC's are overpriced just like the overpriced hunk of metal that Alienware calls a "gaming PC"
Music At Home I agree that Alienware is overpriced but I have to say, it does perform well.
Abhinav Praveen though it performs well, you can get a just as good if not better for a lot cheaper
Thanakorn Sripratak I agree with that, as I did mention in my previous comment.
S E L L O U T
Otherwise, it's just nonsense, imo.
hi i watched this after gamer nexus review where they recommended origin address the thermal issues by putting holes into the window. i see that yours has the holes. is that custom or did that come from origin like that ? planning on getting one of these systems.
i still use that 2013 case for every build so far. Its my fave
For the Strage drive, did you use a Samsung 1tb SSD or used it for hard drive? And what is the name of the hard drive that you used?
Hey Linus if I want to build a new computer and I get the OS running on the computer can I connect my old hard drive into the computer also already have an operating system on that hard drive so will it interfere?
Computer size matters to two kinds of people. The mobile user, and the enterprise user. The mobile user cares about weight and size for travel, and the enterprise user cares because he only has so large of a room to hold so many servers.
Tiny desktop PC's is all about form more than function which is a very niche consumer base.
linus loves cramming his unbelieveable hardware into tiny enclosures
linus question here that has nothing to do with this video but would u recommend the Asus mx27h monitor it says 5ms response time is that good enough i play ps4 mainly
if not then whats a better monitor?
i want an ips panel btw
anything better that u recommend would be good
lol i customized some version of this chronos build on the origin homepage...
the fact that it costs around 80% more than when i would build it myself... is breathtaking...
Wouldn't using cm^3 or even dm^3 (if you don't want to convert) be more appropriate than liters?
What about NUC's, miniPCs (like the Brix), and Shuttles? What about the compute sticks?
No dedicated graphics card.
+agentcrm some gigabyte brix have dedicated graphics.
CreeperOnYourHouse Hmm, yes there seems to be a couple.
+agentcrm they would win the performance per liter competition, and that's ignoring Intel's skull canyon.
I really appreciate how the intro music volume hasn't been cranked up. Yes, so much that I had to make this comment.
How do u check out on the origin site I wana buy the neuron but there is no checkout button
3:46 Why the fuck did a 2013 rig beat the 2016 rig by 6 points?
YellowPeaches it was larger
Can someone explain to me why all of those "super duper small or l33t pre-built" pc's GPU's have STOCK cooling? Why????
Is it form factor or is it some background deal we can trace?
cryohellinc the titan x pascal is only available with stock cooling atm from what I know
PrismFoxes if we exclude titan, others have different options
cryohellinc the stock cooling isnt meant to be the best cooling solution. the purpose of the blower style cooler shroud is to intake cool air in one place, and exhaust it out the back, sacrificing cooling, for the ability to put this hot air out the back, rather than in the small form factor case, which would result in affecting the temps of other components undesirably. it's simply the best for this situation
I had the 2006 case! Brought me back.
I got a small form factor PC. it's really good in my opinion, but I could hardly fit a 1080 in it and I can only use 1 graphics card. I think a small form factor PC might be better as a secondary PC that you use for recording with an elgato and video editing
MEARE why would u want dual 1080's
Why the hell not! :D
I was thinking about using my older graphics card for my second monitor
You are going to do a un-build log on this one right?
I'll give you this, Linus: this was a really good sponsored video.
interesting, but this is all done on 2016 software right? Would be interesting for each of them to be running the OS of the time and benchmarking tools of the time, although then the scores might not relate at all.
Hey Linus, I have been watching almost everyone of your videos for around a year now and love them all!!
I am from Toronto and always get very excited when I see a product or website you are promoting only to find out that it is a US company and all of the pricing is in USD!! Can you please do a segment on best bang for your buck Canadian retailers?!?!?!? :D (or something of the sort :P)
i am pretty sure falcon northwest have a sli titan x fragbox,no?
Holy crap that's my case at 2:39 (the one in the middle), the mighty Antec P182!
i don't understand litres or cups. have you got it in fluid ounces?
Just contacted origin about getting the case and they won't sell it individually. Is there anything similar on the market?
I love Linus's videos cuz they help me compensate for my small ****
I dont care at all for small PCs, my current PC is in a core x9 case from thermaltake. What I really do like is the comparison against older hardware. I would like to see more of this.
your writers a doing a really good job for the past few videos
