Anthony Michael Hall (Breakfast Club, Halloween Kills) joins us this week to discuss his ascension into stardom in the 80’s with Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science and his evolution of getting involved in new projects and different roles nowadays, such as his character in the new Halloween Kills. Anthony discusses fond moments in prior roles and with previous costars, including his relationship with the legendary director John Hughes. We also talk about experiences with Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick, and working with Jamie Lee Curtis on the new set of Halloween Kills.

I’ve always noticed that everyone has mixed opinions about Chevy, but nobody ever has a bad word to say about John Candy. The guy was a true legend and a great person.
Candy is a Canadian legend.
He didn't have mixed opinions about Chevy. He had a clear cut opinion and described his personality. It was just different than John Candy's personality. That's how life works.

Hall probably doesn't like negative gossip about others especially given his past.
For most of us, how we treated others in life is the legacy we leave behind.
The wealthy leave behind buildings with their names on them and artists leave behind their work, but for most of us the best we can hope for is to have people carry us in their hearts.

Anthony Michael Hall was so funny in Sixteen Candles. Unfortunately it's not a very good movie, and has aged poorly.

Had a chance to meet Anthony Michael Hall at a CON a few years ago. He was literally alone at his table.. believe no one realized he was there yet. Happy he has been able to maintain his career into adulthood. He is a great actor and has always been one of my favorites.
He's ALOT more well-spoken then I would've thought.. I love it!
@@kentkatchem I thought the same thing at first and then remembered how well spoken he was as a teen and I guess that carried over to adulthood.
At a lot of these cons, no one cares about the guests unless they're from a sci-fi or fantasy movie or show.
Looking at him now, I wouldn't have known it's the same actor from his early movies or SNL.
Concur with jedijones. Unless you're famous for being in some type of OG or current superhero, animated series, or pop-culture show/movie, NOBODY cares at those type of events. Best example I can give years ago when I use to watch Collider and one of the hosts talked about going to SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) and seeing none other than Ernest Borgnine "alone" at a table. As the host addressed it, this was a guy who won a Best Actor Oscar (and also nominated for four Emmys and was in Airwolf). Yet if Peter Cullen (whose a national treasure BTW excluding his work on Bayformers) were at the same event, the line would stretch as if Christian Louboutin himself were selling his signature heels for $100 a pair to every Kardashian wannabe in the greater LA/SD area. it is what it is.
He doesn't get a lot of credit for Dead Zone but he was really good in that.
Loved Dead zone. Shame they didn't end it properly.
Loved the show as well. He played Johnny so well. And his chemistry with the actress that played Sarah and the guy playing Stillson was great

I got to meet Michael years ago at a convention and he was the nicest dude. I'm really glad his career has stayed on track especially as a child actor. He's done well for himself
On the set of his early movies nobody could believe how innocent and nice he is. Here we are 40 years later saying the same thing.
Vacation is still one of my all time Favs... alot because of this man... Loved every sec. of this movie from start to finish.. :)

I'm the same age as 16 Candles lol I grew up with John Hughes movies and I know plenty of millennials who know about Anthony Michael Hall if anything it's because there's a major love for The Breakfast Club among my peers
What millennials don't know who this is? Every millennial I know knows who this is, then again I was born in the early 80s. We all grew up on his movies.

Check out the movie Out Of Bounds(1986) ....great underrated action/thriller movie he did
Ferris Bueller was written for him, but he wasn’t able to do it. His career would have gone a different direction if he got that. He was also great as the bully in Edward Scissor Hands, which was a departure from his “nerd” awkward teenager parts he usually played.
An underrated actor. No doubt about it. 👍
Saw the first Vacation movie at the drive-in in San Diego when I was a kid, great memories.
John Candy. Immense talent wrapped up in the body of an over-sized teddy bear. He made his name to Americans in light-hearted comedies like "Uncle Buck" or "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles" and greasy, sleazy characters like Johnny LaRue or Harry (the guy with the snake on his face) from Harry's Discount Sex Emporium on SCTV. Drama too, like his role in "JFK". A very kind and generous man who loved his hometown of Toronto and that city's CFL team, the Argonauts. A loving and devoted family man. He is deeply, deeply missed.
He was just coming into his own he died too young.

I always loved Anthony Michael Hall! He always had heart. I was 10 watching 16 Candles and it was my fave. Movie. I left my 10th birthdat party early to go home to see 16 candles
Just one of the funniest guys in his own way in the 80’s. So lovable in all those old movies. Weird science, 16 candles, breakfast club… love him!
Enjoy listening to this guy. As a coach of young adults who sees them at at 13 through 20, his transformation from a kid to a man is one for the ages. He was on Bosch tv show, and my wife could not believe that was him.

I saw John on Yonge Street in Toronto when I was about 20 years old, I was driving south, he was driving north. Traffic had us both stopped side by side. I was smoking in my car and an extremely familiar voice just outside my window said "You know, those things'll kill ya"...I look over and it is John in an M6 BMW, looking every bit of Uncle Buck, smoking a cigar. I said "Holy shit! John Candy! I fuckin love you man!" He took the cigar out of his mouth, smiled and said "I fuckin love you too man" and then traffic moved on and so did we. Not many would appreciate what that interaction means to me, but I hold it with the highest fondness.

The first movie I ever saw Anthony in is Six Pack with Kenny Roger's. But man, he's a big part of my childhood. Some great iconic 80's movies.
Hall has such an engaging manner with his stories!

The guy has it all. Smart, funny, you name it.
My take on Candy is that he improved anything you added him to... lead role or cameo. Small part in Vacation, but he was great and it made the film better. Big part is Spaceballs, and again, he makes it better. Tiny part in Blues Brothers, but again, a great film made just a bit better because he showed up... Harry Crumb he essentially carried himself. Looking back, it should have been a bad movie. A lot of bad elements... but Candy cast in the lead, made it a funny film worth watching a few times.
So to me it looked like that if you were making a comedy and got John Candy in any role, you were 1/2 way to a good comedy.
As for Chevy and Vacation... I think I get it from interviews. Chevy is always snarky, always making little digs for a joke. Some people get really pissed off by it, some see it harmless teasing. Hall did not take offense to the puberty /masturbation joke, took it as a joke, and had no beef with Chevy... but some people would have lost their shit over that 'how dare you talk like that... to a CHILD!!!' I can see it now.
Chevy is a snarky comedian with real snark in real life. Perhaps even a Landsnark. Getting along with his sounds dependent on the thickness of your skin, and willingness to brush off the jabs.
When they did a sequel/reboot to Vacation, I refused to watch. First off, I am sick of reboots, but when I heard it was an sequel and they did NOT cast Hall as Rusty... nope. Never watched it.
The first film was rare comedic perfection. Every scene worked, every actor was great. It seem Christmad Vacation gets more attention since everyone watches it at least once a year, but as good as it is... my money is on the original film for best in the series.
And no other Rusty actor threw down with Chevy as well as Hall. He had better be proud of that film and his work in it.
John stole every scene he was in, because the man just had heart and it showed. Harry Crumb is still one of my favorite movies.

Candy was the greatest. I think if he’d lived he would have transitioned to serious roles like Steve Carrell or Robin Williams.
He did have a serious role as a NOLA guy in JFK, though he said he sweated with nerves the whole scene.

Not sure why they never bring up the movie six pack. It had Kenny Roger's and Diane Lane in it and they act like it never happened.
Ran into him a couple of years ago. I asked, “Has anyone ever told you you look like Anthony Michael Hall?” He said “Yeah all the time.” Nice man. I simply thanked him for all his awesome movies that were woven into my DNA. Great memories.

True story, my dad rented Vacation for us, but then fell ill and passed away, and we wound up never returning the movie, so we watched it all the time for years. I know it like the back of my hand. If it's on tv my siblings and I will text each other screen shots of "the family truckster."
If you only had been able to watch it before the funeral, you could have put him on the top of your car and driven around for a few weeks.
I loved his show The Dead Zone.

I was stunned. It’s probably because people don’t realize how far back his career goes.
I'm slightly older than AMH and I was surprised. I didn't know that. I didn't know he was acting at that time. The Breakfast Club is the first time I saw him.
I think the first time I ever saw him in was 6 Pack with Kenny Roger's. I think he was about 10 or younger. Johnny Be Good was a good one too.
