The great thing about RUclips is that I can see the greatest concert of all time (in my head that is) Incredible String Band, Gong and Kevin Ayres and the Whole World as headliners. Bliss!
31 March 1970 Taverne de l’Olympia, Paris, France. Recorded and filmed for "Pop 2" TV program Why are we sleeping Kevin Ayers vocals, guitar, bass David Bedford keyboards Lol Coxhill sax Mike Oldfield bass & guitar, backing vocals Mick Fincher drums
It begins with a blessing And it ends with a curse; Making life easy, By making it worse; My mask is my Master, The trumpeter weeps, But his voice is so weak As he speaks from his sleep, saying Why, why, why, why are we sleeping! People are watching, People who stare; Waiting for something That's already there. Tomorrow I'll find it , The trumpeter screams, And remembers he's hungry And drowns in his dreams, saying Why, why, why, why are we sleeping! My head is a nightclub With glasses and wine; The customers dancing Or just making time; While David is cursing The customers scream! Now everyone's shouting, "Get out of my dreams!" Toujours d'actualité !!!!
@@lucobruco1180 Yes. Playing with Kevin Ayers he would go back and forth between the guitar and the bass. Listen for instance to his contributions to the June 1, 1974 album.
One of my fave Soft Machine songs. The album became my fave in 1970. One of the two first got redone remastered and released in JAHpan. I think this one..
Wow, great post, the type that makes me appreciate RUclips. Thank you. Always loved this Soft Machine song, got the album at the time, a true standout, love this live version too, Kevin Ayers ruled. Powerful song.
m i see him life in concert 1972 in munich in a club dawn town a great performance the guitarist and bass was from the irish band the taste he sang i never work for the yakee dollars and german marks too
i bow to your musical knowledge where i dont understand the musical content of this sog as i never did about leonard cohen so i guese so i guese its about poetry
Given his family background, I'm surprised Ayers was given the first name "Kevin". From the little I know about him, and listening to him speak, one would assume him to originate from a solidly upper middle class background but Kevin seems such a working class name!
[26 January 2022] I must confess, I always thought so too. If you just looked at his face (when he was in his prime) and heard his voice, before you knew his name, you'd probably imagine him to have a name like Cornelius or Julian or something like that.
Sorry, but divorced from its wacky context, this 'music' really IS the most awful adolescent rubbish. Thank god we've all grown up. I liked some Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt, etc. But all of it - all that post Woodstock British groove, Caravan, Van D GG, it was all 95% pose and 5% music. Who tf listens to it anymore? Crystal Palace 2, Fulham 0.
"Sorry, but divorced from its wacky context, this 'music' really IS the most awful adolescent rubbish." -----Totally agree. In fact, there was a point in which Oldfield could not stand it anymore (according to him), and began working on the project that should change his life. Forever.

this is great music. i am so grateful that none of these guys would be considered for that bastion of mediocrity called. the rock n roll hall of fame.

Kevin Ayers vocals, guitar, bass
David Bedford keyboards
Lol Coxhill sax

#classic. This genius left us far too young...
Love that organ sound
The Whole World was a fucking fantastic band.
Just amazing that we can see that... What a good version and seeing Kevin is so joyful and Mike Oldfield..that's the best band he ever had
Mike Oldfield was only 17 when this was recorded! What a talent.
julotto is he playing guitar??
@@lucobruco1180 Yes. Playing with Kevin Ayers he would go back and forth between the guitar and the bass. Listen for instance to his contributions to the June 1, 1974 album.
Check your math , he was 26yo. when this was recorded.
@@sangfroid4376 1970 - 1953 = 17. It seems Julotto was correct.

And we are still sleeping (while they slaughter us)
Incredible! Thanks for sharing, jim
I was a big fan back in the 70s, but never got to see him live. Never realized he was quite a tall dude until RUclips. 🙂

Great line this song title. Did Kevin say it first?
Grande Kevin
Roll-ups haha brilliant
Is that Lol Coxhill on Tenor?
I think so...it looks like him. There should be a campaign to make the genius of Lol Coxhill better known to the world.
For sure. The inimitable Lol.
Everybody's dancing..not watching; Supernatural Song!
so anyway this more or less rocked my socks off..
does anyone know what bass KA is playing?
Looks like a Fender Precision with the horns cut down.
I'm not a guitarist but that neck seems mighty long? 🤔
Typical scale length of a bass is 34 inches, so with a smaller body it will look very long.
That's Mick Fincher, right?
'?robert wyatt on drums?
Amazing bit of footage, is there more? I'd hit 'like' but it's currently at 666, so...

Correct. on a Farfisa Professional.
Kevin Ayers eclipsed by a superior Oldfield
Not the point.

Mike Oldfield playing bass at 17 before Tubular Bells.
Oldfield's Telecaster looks like he found it in a skip!
Looks like it's the Tubular Bells Telecaster, because you can see in the closeups it has a middle pickup added.
why
The studio version is much better.
Butchered this one, sadly.
