    Substitute teacher here. I asked sixth graders (11yo) how they would use science when they got out of school. Nothing deep, mostly to keep them busy for a few minutes. Every single student was bewildered. “You mean like, this afternoon?” No, when you gradu… when you’re done for good.” The only kid with any ambition said, “I’m not going to use science; I’m going to stay home and grow weed.” (This is before it was legal anywhere.)
    Part of me is appalled, while part is thinking, “That’s botany, chemistry, biology…”

    I had 2 guys in my class drop out of highschool the day they turned 18 mere months before finishing... like, tough it out for a few more months and they give you a piece of paper, or quit now and to the rest of the world it will look like you wasted the first 18 years of your life even though you were a single digit of months away from being a highschool graduate which is atleast something!

    I knew a student that thought second hand smoke meant they smoked with a cigarette in both hands.

    So, you weigh the cat and carrier and then the carrier ans subtract the two. Thats not algebra. Thats basic subtraction.

    I was the total opposite. I knew all the material. I just never did any of the work. And to be brutally honest it was a combination of being constantly bullied and trying to fit in and just not feeling challenged enough to where I wanted to do the work.. I was that strange kid who actually read the textbook from front to back cause I was bored in class. Dunno if I went somewhere else if things would have changed or what. I did graduate high school from a charter school that had vocational program. i was 2nd in my class.

      All I can say is that Lawrence's father had better not expect his son to be around for him when he gets old because the kid will make his escape as soon as he can.

    Shocked about that 4 year old, both my daughters could read at the same level as a 10 year old at age 5 and do basic math. Now my daughters are 39 & 40 with children and working high paying jobs. The girls still love reading, the oldest one sends me a book list when her birthday or Christmas is coming up.

    To all the kids who don't think they're going to use any math... Good luck with any sort of cooking or sewing without fractions, conversion, measurements, or geometry. Because fractions and converting measurements into other measurements are used a lot in recipes, both in regular cooking and baking. Especially baking.
    And when I was in college, I wish I'd paid more attention in geometry, because I went to college for fashion design, which has a lot of angles, curves, etc.

    Success or no success rarely has anything to do with qualifications. If you gave the position to the most qualified people, so many large companies wouldn't have problems figuring out what's going wrong again. Most chats have no idea how the day-to-day operations of your company actually work

    Had a little something different happen. Knew a kid. Tried hard but rough home life. Constantly skipping to take one time jobs to help out at home. Overhead 2 teachers when I was in detention one day for getting beat up (teachers knew I didn't retaliate so they let me do whatever I wanted in detention)
    Teacher 1- If that kid can't be bothered to come to class I'm not gonna try to teach him.
    Teacher 2 - yeah you know kids like that are just gonna grow up to be drug dealers i don't bother with dumb shitheads like that I just give them failing grades so they'll drop out and I won't have to deal with them anymore.

    • @miraveta
      @miraveta 5 месяцев назад

      And the opposite. Teachers bending over every which way to help kids that had all the resources they could ever need but skip class to drink, get high, just cause general trouble for everyone. School sucks. I actually wish I dropped out cause hell I'm not getting a good job based on my education. I got the best job I've ever known by knowing a screw up that recommended me to a small business owner he knew. The owner thought I'd be a screw up too and I'd be good for a few weeks of cheap labor. 9 years later I'm still working for him. For less than minimum wage and sporadic hours but he knows I work hard and wants me working for him. He knows ill do favors and deal with shitty customers and ill do what I can to help the business. Hes a good boss even if he's a bit forgetful or strapped for cash when it comes to paying me. Fun guy. Hard worker. Renovated a whole new building for his business by himself and a few guys like me that want to help. Bitch of a job the previous owner didn't know what he was doing so the walls, floor, and ceiling and all the fixtures had to be ripped out and replaced. WHO THE HELL PAINTS BEAUTIFUL MAHOGANY WINDOWSILLS AND BENCHES WITH CHEAP RED PAINT AND PUTS THE DEEP FRYER RIGHT BELOW THE VENTILATION SYSTEM?!?!
      Side note : health inspectors may let the place down the road get away with blatent violations cause they know each other but "there's dust in the air vents thats a fail"
