      Yes, it's crazy that servers are still making $2.13/hour. I remember friends working as servers in college. If your manager put you on crappy shifts, you made little or nothing for the day. So if you got stuck working a few lunch shifts at a place that was very quiet at lunch time, you could spend 5 hours making almost nothing.

    I don't understand why it's even allowed in the usa that an employes can pay less than the legal minimum wage and say "whatever I'm short is made up in tips". No. Minimum wage from the employer, tips on top of that. Any employer that would try that in my country would have zero staff but a lawsuit happening anyway.

    Restaurants must pay workers a living wage. In other developed economies, restaurant workers are treated with dignity and earn fair wages, but in the U.S., too many businesses exploit their employees. These workers deserve a living wage. Tips should be a bonus for exceptional service, not a lifeline. Let’s show empathy and demand fair pay for these hard-working workers.

    I wish the congressman had actually answered the question about tips. From what others in the party have said, Haris saw that the tip issue was very important to voters so she wanted to adress it. However, she doesn't want to make all tips tax free, she wants guardrails so that people don't abuse the system. Trump wants to give the no tax on tips to everyone so that Wallstreet can change their model to a tip based system instead of commission. It would be the same money, but no longer taxed.

    How bout instead of no tax on tips. We just do no tips. Just pay your employees a living wage rather than passing that responsibility onto your patrons. I have worked as a tipped employee for the better part of my adult life. I stopped years ago because it is an unfair system that doesn't work. It allows company's to profit of their servers misfortune, creates tension between your servers and your customers, and forces workers to rely on luck and empathy for an income. Empathy that is unfortunately rare. Also sometimes people just can't afford to pay more than they already have and why should they have to? Or feel obliogated to?

    The best solution for tips is to do what the Europeans do: include the gratuity in the price of service and pay your workers a living wage. Standardize it so it doesn't become a form of PG prostitution. Workers in that sector suffer enough indignities as it is.

  • @epochchange6803
    @epochchange6803 18 дней назад +3

    The main difference between VP Harris's tip tax elimination proposal and Dump's proposal is that VP Harris knows that an increase in the minimum wage has to be tied in with the elimination of tax tips. You have to have an offset, and raising the minimum wage is that offset. Taxes on tips fund Social Security and Medicare, which have to be paid into. So just eliminating the tax on tips is not the answer, the minimum wage has to be raised in order to ensure workers continue to pay into Social Security and Medicare. Harris's plan will be a gradual phase-out of taxes on tips triggered by an increase in the minimum wage for workers.

    Tips are getting out of control in the US (especially with all the apps at restaurants and stores nowadays). NO country in the world has our tips culture. In Europe, tips are the changes (coins... not bills) return to the customer after they paid the bill, and it's not required. In Asia... no nation accustomed to tips or require it as an expected part of the service transaction.... especially in Japan, where tips are frowned upon and the service worker would be very offended if tips are rendered after their service.

I was the only one who gave the real numbers. The others always said either $1 or $0. Why? Cause they were making $5 an hour with bills to pay and kids to feed. They couldn't afford $40 turning into $36. I was a teenager (and scared of getting audited or I would have said nothing too) so an hour's pay loss wasn't going to break me. It would have broken some of the guys I worked with.

    Tipping goes back to the post-abolition of slavery days. Many businesses wouldn't/couldn't overtly employ former slaves. So many former slaves had no choice but to hang around businesses and hope to do their former 'slave' jobs, casually and unofficially, for 'tips' - in-lieu of actual wages. Anyone who is working a subservient job that requires them to rely on 'tips' from their 'masters', is doing a "black job". America needs to catch up with the rest of the developed world and stop the degrading practise of 'tipping' in-lieu of wages.

    I understand the need to win in Nevada, but wages are a far, far better policy. I also think hospitality workers considering voting for Trump over this issue should really be asking some hard questions like, "Will this affect my social security benefit in future years?", "Will this affect any EITC I'm receiving?", "Will this affect my ability to contribute to an IRA or other retirement plan, assuming I can even consider such a thing?" There's no way a Trump administration implements a policy as simple as a bigger paycheck without some unpleasant surprises to be discovered afterwards.
    As for Harris copying Trump... While I don't personally love the policy for a variety of reasons, campaign policy proposals are in the public domain the minute they come out of a politician's mouth. So sad for you, Orange Man. It was never original with you in any case.
