    Nice analysis! It's weird how Rach is sometimes dismissed as sappy (even today), when his stuff is some of the most carefully and rigorously written music out there. Also love looking at how composers deal w the limitations of the keyboard - in this case, what to do when the orchestral melody goes beyond the C8.

      thanks! i personally feel that rach sometimes lacks that bit of subtlety compared to the german composers but there's no doubt that his music is masterfully created. big fan btw :-)

    Off topic but, everybody here should check out Rachmaninoff playing this finale himself. It's very interesting how the composer had a totally different conception of the music than everybody else. It's much faster and portrays a totally different emotion. He even writes vivacissimo in the score but most people play it much differently. I personally like a middle ground between his and the normal performances.

      thanks for the suggestion! it does remind me then of horowitz's which is quite fast as well and he probably got that from listening to rach

      He did It fast because he couldn't play It slower due to the fact that the recording time at this time could not be very extended, no by choice

      @@Ernestooooooooooo This is not true, they took many cuts in the recording and Horowitz’s recording from nearly a decade earlier is longer. Rachmaninoff was known to play his music much faster and less sentimentally. And of course he wrote vivacissimo and poco a poco Accelerando. Many people treat it like a slow movement
      Edit: I just found out that there's a live recording of Gieseking playing Rach 3 about 10 months before Rachmaninoffs own recording. He plays with no cuts, ossia cadenza, and with a sometimes drastically slow tempo. The recording is more than 7 mins longer than Rachmaninoffs. It wasn't a question of technology, if Rachmaninoff wanted to slower, he couldve.

      ​@@skylarlimexHorowitz and Rachmaninoff knew each other very well. Horowitz even called him his best friend after his death!

    Very nice analysis! As a layman when it comes to music theory, I wad able to follow through and then spot all of that when listening to the piece again.
    One tiny critique: it's criminal to not let the whole finale play through, especially after the penultimate climax of the piano and the orchestra!

    I love his use of voice leading through diminished chords between simple diatonic harmonies; so much musical storyline

    My favourite version of this piano Concerto is the one performed by Olga Kern

    I also love the A-pedal (3-bars) @3:18 in the piano (and orchestra part, though it seems to end half a bar earlier than the A-pedal in the piano part). It’s not really audible since there’s so much melodic movement above, and it is also not super surprising harmonically, and yet it remains one of my favorite pedals in all of music (perhaps due to the epicness surrounding the passage)

    0:37 out of piano range? That's the highest B on the piano. Did I misunderstand something? :)

      He means it would be out of range if the piano continues playing the melody. Which is why it plays two bars of supporting chords instead.

      If the melody continued in the piano, it would play a C#8 and D8, which are out of range.
