I love listening to KRS-One. I'm 43 years old and grew up listening to hip-hop, and I didn't realize it until way later that, on some level, it served as a medium to the larger world. Growing up in Utah, I didn't see or experience a lot of what mcs were describing....so it opened my eyes and mind to others' experiences/perspectives, and I love it for that.
