When I was a museum educator, I was giving a live animal presentation of a three-toed box turtle to an elementary school group. One cute child raised his hand to say that his grandfather told him that when a box turtle goes inside its shell, it’s watching TV! That was just awesome.
E.T the black-breasted leaf turtle isn’t too impressed he didn’t make the cut 👀🐢😜. All jokes aside, great video as usual! I really wish black-breasted leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) were more readily available and affordable. They are truly the perfect pet turtle. They are so small (max size as adults is 4.3 inches) and can live in a terrestrial setup with a large shallow water dish or a shallow filtered pool area to chill and wade in (Paludarium). Plus they have googly eyes 👀🐢!
There are so many cool species I left out. Every Matta Matta will be giving me the stink eye from now on, snake-necked turtles for sure feel snubbed too🤣
I have never in my life wanted a turtle, until I saw those diamondback bean boys. They are precious. Also, the way the musk turtles swim is hysterical to me 😂
My mother in law has a Red Eared Slider named Titania. She intervened when someone tried to release her at the animal sanctuary she used to work at. Titania is now a big girl at least 10 years old. She has had bare basics of care and while she is doing okay, she is not thriving like I would like to see. I convinced my mother in law to supersize her tank and she is now in a huge black tote with a lot more room to swim. I am considering adopting her and would want to give her the best habitat possible and really improve her situation. Would you consider doing a care guide/ perhaps show some cool DIY enclosures for turtles?
Finally someone acknowledged the box turtle! My grandma is a turtle and tortoise enthusiast and I caught the bug from her early on. I have three different types of box turtles in my collection, I have a three toed, an Eastern, and a desert/Sonoran. They are all just wonderful and I love keeping them. They are so much fun to watch and feed, and they are pretty low maintenance as far as turtles go!
I have a Gulf coast boxie, my vet is amazed how tame she is and she says she never sees turtles like her. She says she's one of the tamest turtles she's ever seen. More like a tiny monitor in intelligence and behavior. She's not shy at all and totally handleable lol I Love her 🐢
At the petstore here yellow belly sliders are 25$. I wish they were more as a lot of care is needed for them and they just aren't knowledgeable when selling them. My yellow belly slider is almost 2 years old and she is awesome. I can't really hold her as she scratches me more than tries to bite but I still enjoy watching her bask and taking her outside when the weather is warm. Turtles are awesome! And I must say I keep my turtle in a 150g stock tank. (It's huge and takes up my kitchen but I love her 😂) Love your videos and look forward to the next one!
I had a snapping turtle that was rescued from our parking lot on a hot summer day as a fresh hatchling, about the size of a small coin. I raised her and handled her every day for years. Her and I would go all over. She got so used to people that she was like a puppy, with Petsmart being one of her favorite places. Usually trying to climb on my shoulder and then from a shopping cart (with padding) when she got too big, trying to get a look at everything. I had so much trust in her that even when she was big I would try to give her as much free roam time around the house as she wanted. She usually ended up exploring some then coming back to me, try and dig into my side a bit and fall asleep. Saying that though, I would never recommend one as a pet to anybody. Mine was a sweety but it took me years of spending hours with her every day for her to become tame. And all it takes is 1 bite to mess you up pretty bad for life.
Good video. I'd have elaborated that "forever" for the box turtle is "potentially 100 years." That's the biggest thing with turts (and torts) that people don't look at is the lifetime commitment. I don't think Turtles are great pets unless you are really, really prepared for the higher maintenance and lifespan. But you covered good choices for people that want to start researching. I have two red eared sliders, 2 diamond terrapins, 2 box turtles, and an ornate and black wood turtle. The wood turtles are the only ones missing on the list, and personally I'd put them ahead of sliders.
I definitely want a box turtle as I am not one that wants the water set ups. I do have 2 Leopard Tortoises, 20 & 21 years old. I am going to have to will them to a zoo.
@@caseysilva6919 zoo won't take em. Have to will them to a nephew or friends kids or something! I have a sulcata. It floors people to learn that the 3rd (sulcata) and 4th (leopard) largest tortoise species are so easy to get as pets.

The personality of the turtles is insane and was definitely my best lockdown purchase from last year 😂 Did my research before getting a turtle before anyone thinks i just got one cause I was bored, research 100% most important aspect of taking care of any animal 🐍🐢
You should introduce fruits, greens and veggies as soon as you can. Once they are hooked on bugs when you feed it to them when they are young, it’s hard to get them to eat fruits and vegetables as adults. Plus if you just feed them bugs when they are young, they won’t grow properly.
My mom's Christmas present to me last year was letting me rescue an African side neck turtle. She was not being taken care of very well in her previous home.
I had a red ear slider named yuki when I was 11-12 and I LOVED that turtle! Taking care of the water became overwhelming for my child brain and my mom couldn’t be bothered so we rehomed her. But now that I’m an adult I would like to have another red eared slider one day. Such amazing turtles! Yuki was so docile and cute and so easy to handle. 10/10 would recommend if you’re able to give them the space they need.
I have a Mississippi map and I LOVE HIM TO DEATH. They are probably the best species to keep in my opinion. They're small, they're fun to watch and they're cute as hell.
I also love big als aquarium! They know so much. For years we were killing our fish and didn't know why until they told us to have the light on for only 5 hours, and feed every other day! Pet smart told us the opposite
So on the 3rd of march 2021 (so 5 days before this post) I got my first pet reptile the ball python in my pfp and it's a specter pinstripe and the place and they fed it every weekend day. Well it's only been 5 days and I just tried feeding it (live hopper cause that's what they were feeding out and I wanted to make sure it eats before moving to frozen or rat pups) and it already ate without a single problem! Ate the moment the mouse came to it so I'm happy that it seems to be feeling comfy cause it's been super active every night
Painted Turtles are great too!! Overall smaller size like maps, 4 different sub species to choose from, and females only get like 6-8'' and males 4-5".
Just became a subscriber and I love these videos. I would say one fantastic turtle to keep that didn’t make the list is spotted turtles. Stay small, well tempered, attractive coloration.
I think the most rewarding pet turtle, if you really go the extra mile with them, and if you can obtain them legally, is the common snapping turtle. They are really not for beginners but they're impressive, personable, and easy to take care of just on a larger scale. If you don't want a huge enclosure, my money is on Africans side-necked turtles. They don't need very large enclosures as far as aquatic turtles go, and they are very personable and adorable. They're like musk turtles but more fun, arguably easier and more available. With all that said, the only turtle I consider to be a beginner-friendly reptile for non-aquarists is the box turtle.
I’m in Mo and Box turtles do go into the water they are found on the bottom of ponds often. If you’re going to keep one have enough water they can submerged themselves
i know where u got that price screen shot for red ears from, you ignore the "no florida sales" on the site's page for any red ear slider, look at that pick and choose info. as is thats a store based in florida, they don't / can't legally sell them in state but can ship them to areas they are legal, and they can't leggaly sell any turtle under 4 inches without a set up, or proof of set up.
I would throw spotted turtles in there as a sleeper pick very simplistic small semi aquatic turtle. They like shallow water. However in some states where they are naturally found there is restrictions on keeping them.

Box turtles are great. I got one from a local tortoise and turtle rescue. The poor thing has been kept in a small aquarium its whole life and not taken care of. Mites infested The tank and chewed off all her toes. I have a large outdoor enclosure that I have split into half, one side for the box turtle and the other one for my Russian tortoise. I'm tempted to divide it into thirds and make an area for my northern blue tongue skink this coming summer.
Top 3 are good. Razorback musks and a various maps are pretty aquatic and for beginners. CB DB Terrapins live perfectly well in fresh water. Do more research. If you want a big turtle get a mata mata. Here in states people buy cheap sliders but don't want to spend for a tank or tub of the proper size. A pet on the cheap.

A friend of mine is going through a pretty rough patch and surrendered his 6yo yellow bellied slider to me because I keep aquariums for fish. He was keeping it in a 20g long (I know, way too small) and right now I’ve only got space for a 40g breeder in my current living arrangement. I am moving into a spot in June and will have a 100g tank that’s been sitting in storage available. I totally understand water changes, diet, lighting, filtration, etc, from fishkeeping. Am I doing too much harm keeping this turtle for a few months in a 40g? I’d much rather surrender it if I’m doing irreparable harm, but my friend needed to move immediately and I had a spare 40g available.
That's the wrong question to be asking. Don't skimp on water changes. Proper aquatic turtle husbandry generally requires frequent, large water changes every week or two of at least 50 percent or more, especially since the turtle(s) will be living in an enclosed environment; so a large dose of fresh, clean water can only be beneficial. Spot cleaning shouldn't be necessary as a good mechanical and biological filtration should remove and break down any turtle waste relatively quickly in between scheduled water changes. Now, I have certainly gone a month or more without maintenance when life gets busy (minus top offs), and a mature filter and setup certainly helps, but it's always best practice to stick to a scheduled routine to develop that self-discipline and get you in the habit. This habit can mean the difference between someone keeping his turtle for 10-15 years vs. someone who still has his same turtle 40 years later.
Diamondbacks are so incredibly personable to, but yeah you HAVE to go beamish. I tried fresh water twice and both turtles died in less than a month. Just go brackish, a big both of aquarium salt is cheap. Put in the work.
Hi, I have a garden pond with a Turtle in, I have some hear bulbs, too, you think it's a waste of time using the heat bulbs as it's in the garden or will it help with it's health/ not a bad idea/can't hurt? I live in the U.K.
I have a question. Do tortoises carry salmonella? I have a turtle she’s about 7 years old but I’ve always washed my hands immediately after because I once heard they carried salmonella.
I keep diamondback Terrapins and honestly they are by far in my opinion a loy easier than most turtles to keep and if born in captivity they dont need to be in brackish water at all

I have a garden pond with a Turtle in, I have some hear bulbs, too, you think it's a waste of time using the heat bulbs as it's in the garden or will it help with it's health/ not a bad idea/can't hurt? I live in the U.K.
great video but i have just one question. can a turtle be happy if it lives alone?
My musk turtle is in a 20 gallon tank and is doing really well
I have 3 albino redeared sliders, 1 charcoal redeared slider and 1 pink belly side neck and probably getting a few more lol
I've actually got an African Sideneck Turtle. His name is Norbert.
Just when I was going to say where is your shoulder pet, haha I now understand thanks for all your input
hahaha
Stinkpots rule!! My bucket list turtles are Fly River and captive bred Mata Mata
Musks and muds are sooo cool! Loved seeing mine in the video!
Love my razorback musk! Never had him musk me.
I have a question. Do tortoises carry salmonella? I have a turtle she’s about 7 years old but I’ve always washed my hands immediately after because I once heard they carried salmonella.
all reptiles can carry
@@WickensWickedReptiles thank you
i would loveeee a musk turtle care guide !!
I can confirm, musk turtles like to bite... I just got mine in January
cool!
Yeah mine showed in the vid (mud and musk) are not to bad and are super used to me and don’t musk!
Great list - Pink belly sidenecks are missing on this list in my opinion 💚🐢🐢
they were on there but switched em for stinkpots last minute
@@WickensWickedReptiles ah I see 😅- we‘ll get our stinkpot on Saturday.
I keep diamondback Terrapins and honestly they are by far in my opinion a loy easier than most turtles to keep and if born in captivity they dont need to be in brackish water at all
cool
My box turtle caught and ate a anole. They can book when they want to.
wow that's wild!
Hey man, got any semi-aquatics? I'm always looking at info on mine. I have a wood turtle and it's fun to watch him on land and in water.
