What I love about this dude is that he's the first prisoner we see in the movie, except for the guys who get blown up on the raft, and he perfectly encapsulates the inner culture of New York: barbaric and ruthless, but still charismatic, and not at all stupid. The first time I saw this movie, as soon as this guy showed up, I knew I was watching an absolute god damn classic.
Exactly 💯, it's become a cult classic ‼️ Just like the THE WARRIORS ‼️ I saw this a half a dozen times...... And I bought the paper back novel, it was Awesome 👍....John Carpenter, had budget restraints.....if it would went by the novel, it would have been even more Awesome...... one of my favorites, from that time/era...... Mad Max 1 ,2 and 3... were Awesome ‼️
Such an iconic performance. Also, I love the small detail that he's perfectly in time: 0:39 he announces the 30s window, and at 0:49 he starts counting from 20.
😮 Romero, the emissary of The Duke, was so creepy. We loved it as kids when he leaned his head back, opened his mouth, and hissed while gazing forward at people.
@@darrinmagnus1 Read the Paperback Novel, Escape From New York !! Because of budget restraints, if they could have made it, as close to the Novel.... It would have been even more Awesome ! !
With the lack of haircuts due to COVID-19 and my already fragile mental state being assaulted by high-level incompetence, I am slowly transforming into Romero under lock-down. I'd be worried about that, but there are much worse fates than that in our world these days. Haaaaah!
I think the german actor Klaus Kinski would have been a perfect fit for the role of Romero “the punk “ but Frank Doubleday certainly killed it ….great job 😊

Exactly because question is these were supposed to be the bad guys but technically were they ? Snake was no hero but he never wanted to be the ending tells you who the bad guy really was these movies should be made because they make people think and question
Thibault Plisson brilliant character in a brilliant film. He really gives the setting an unhinged feel. I don't think it would be the same film without his performance.
Yep. Stood out for me too I was fascinated as a kid to what was a great movie. I watched many of these style movies underage like a lot of us probably did
Cult classic sci-fi masterpiece of a movie. These days all they want is none-stop fast-moving CGI effect. Movies today have no soul. Empty, plastic, shallow, forgettable, throwaway crap.

"There are no small roles, only small actors!" I remember the very first time I saw this scene. I thought the actor was Michael Biehn. 😂 Frank did a really great performance, even just in short time. RIP. 16/07/23
0:31 I like the way how Romero bows. First step normal bow and then - in a second step - almoust a kowtow to show his gracefully respect to his opponent. Romero is a very polite and humble character.
Never viewed the bow he does as respect, but as a mocking of social etiquette. A lunatic trying to mimic normal behavior. Which he did very convincingly. He was very creepy in that role.
I like how he does that too and in fact, that is the creepiest thing I thought he did in this when I was a kid. Creepier than his face or the way he dies, or his voice, or even his laugh. But that weird little bow. When i was a kid I didn't wtf he was doing.
He wasn’t bowing. Wtf 😂 he was crazy af. It was a tick. Like he had an episode and was suddenly another person. His character was probably raped until he was mentally a lap dog
I'm going to start walking like this guy and watch people stepping aside thinking to themselves "What the hell?" I was in HS when this came out. Loved it.
The first time I saw this film I got the impression that the first words Romero spoke, “You touch me, he dies”, wasn’t something the Duke told him to say but something Romero added as an insurance policy for himself.
Small parts in the movie and I couldn’t get over his hair. Maybe a wig but didn’t think about a wig in 1981 I was 9 years old Love this flick. Ever ever saw the sequel
I watched Escape from LA with a girl that had never seen Escape from New York. His character actually scared her. She said child molester. I didn't show her Assault on Precinct 13.
Great scene R I P Lee Van Cleef and The Dude who stole the whole scene here with Hilarious and Chilling results 😂😂😂You laugh At my hairstyle he dies 😂😂😂
First time I watched the movie, when I saw Romero in the back of the Duke's car when the Duke is introduced, I thought Romero WAS the Duke and the two men in front were his heavies. That would have been such an interesting twist and made his scene with Hauk even better. Imagine if Romero was the Duke and just walked out to Hauk and was taken for a creepy nobody when he was really the main villain the whole time.
Same here, it totally made sense that the Duke would be hanging out in the back limo style, always thought it was oddly out of character that he'd choose the passenger's seat instead. Even when it was made clear that the Duke was Isaac Hayes's character, I still thought it might be revealed that Romero was secretly the one in charge, using the "Duke" as a distraction to keep attention off of himself (up until his unceremonious shanking).
Mr Lee Van Cleef amazing acting career

In 40 years of watching movies, one of the best scenes ever, sets up the movie nicely. Serious badass sruff.
W'll never forget the scene
How can 1 minute contain so much character?
Seriously. He had like a total of about 2 minutes in the entire movie yet was added so much to this movie.
That sigh at the end,,, perfect

The presence, the eyes, the speech of Frank Doubleday in this scene is... just fantastic.
It was my favorite scene in the movie. My friends and I would literally act the whole thing out with every detail.

It was smart to give Romero a Southern drawl to illustrate that this prison is nationwide, and not just limited to New York.
