    I have a tip about the brushes if you choose to buy your own. Make sure the bristles of the brush are short as they lend a lot more accuracy than brushes with long bristles. Another tip I have is make sure to twist the bristles of your brush to a point each and every time after cleaning, this will keep your brush nice and in the correct shape to paint. The last tip I have is if you make a mistake and paint over a previous color too much, you can use a wet brush to "paint away" the mistake. this only works if there is already paint down where you've made the mistake. this has helped me a LOT! : )

    I'm just starting my first canvas and was so glad to find yours. I had just watched one where someone built & stretched the canvas on bars which seemed awkward to me; as you said it makes it very "bouncy" in the middle! So I will find a large enough drawing board and use the tape method which makes much more sense. I also like your tip about starting with the darks first. Overall great tips for a beginner!

    I already paint using acrylics but getting good subject material is a pain so I started painting by numbers saving me the time to draw my subject. I use synthetic brushes that keep their points and are middle range price and are easy to clean and maintain. I also use artist quality acrylics and if I need to I can use them if I run short of supplied paints, although you cannot get the precise colour you can mix to very near the colour you need. I also blend the joins so it gives a smoother appearance to sections of differing colours

    I recently began pbn as a hobby and wanted to say thanks for posting the video! I have one tip that may help with the more intricate areas and that is to invest in watch repair glasses with an LED light. I have a pair from Amazon that we're around $35 and they have made all the difference when paired with fine detail brushes. I agree the ones that come with the kits are awful.

    Thank you, I agree with your tips. I would add two. 1) I'm right handed so I try to start in the upper left hand corner so that I don't drag wet paint across the canvas. 2)..I like to tape my canvas down to a piece of foam board it does flatten it out, make it easy to turn so as to have a better reach and I prefer to frame the projects in poster frames, which you cannot do it you've put them on wooden stretchers.

    • @ALLJArt
      @ALLJArt  4 года назад

      Any craft/value pack of brushes will do but I use the Arteza miniatures for all my PBN and my normal paintings! They are currently out of stock though arteza.co.uk/dp/detail-paint-brush-set-of-15
      Maybe you could try a set from jacksons. This is also a good set and cheaper, unfortunately out of stock too :( www.jacksonsart.com/silver-brush-ultra-mini-golden-taklon-brush
      I would keep checking back or get them to email you when back in stock because they really are good.
      If you really want them quick maybe Amazon might be your best bet, not sure what country you come from so you might have to just search miniature brushes in the search bar like this: www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=miniature+brushes&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 Any one of those sets are pretty good!
      Hope this helps

  • @gailhansen7282

    Thank you for the tips! I just bought my 1st PBN. I was wondering if you feel it's better to have the canvas stretched on a wooden frame before starting? Or is it ok to have it stretched and framed when completed? Will the paint crack? Where is your favorite place to find frames? Hobby Lobby? Michaels? Or somewhere else? Also is there normally enough paint to make it through a painting?

    • @ALLJArt
      @ALLJArt  4 года назад +3

      I haven't really ever done a PBN with a frame so I can't really say but I do like to tape them to a sturdy board so that the canvas doesn't move. I stretched and framed a finished one on a wooden frame and it was fine, the paint didn't crack. I am from Scotland so I don't have Hobby Lobby and Michaels here. I get mine from a UK shop chain called The Range or B&M. I think they are similar to those stores anyway. I usually have extra paint left over. They tend to give you more than enough to complete the painting but it is easy enough to contact the company and explain you have ran out. This usually helps them gauge better how much paint people will need for certain ones. Hope this helps!

    I find painting at a slight angle to be easier and much more comfortable. Not vertical like a standard easel but not flat either. I bought a drawing table on sale which adjusts.. but before that I used a piece of plywood with two jumbo pushpins stuck in the upper corners. You can set it on your regular flat surface and it gives you that nice angle. Anything flat and solid will work if you don't have plywood.. for example a large clipboard or even heavy foamboard.

    Great tips! Totally agree with thicker paints ruining your brush, although I actually like the texture it gives so I don’t water them down. If I find very watery paints, I use a bit of tippex on the number first so that I don’t have to worry about the number peeking through. Also, mixing watery paints with a cocktail stick and using the paint off the stick rather than directly from the tub seems to help too.

    • @ALLJArt
      @ALLJArt  2 года назад

      The tippex tip is a good idea or if you don't have tippex then maybe getting a wee tube of acrylic white would help too! I mix my other tips of paint with cocktail sticks and they are actually really good for making marks in paintings as well!

    Recently ordered a paint by number. I haven't had one of these sets since I was much, much younger. I really appreciate the input you've shared in this vid, it's gonna help in this process for sure. As a child these kits came in a box on a hard surfaced pallet. This is on a canvas, that has fold lines... can these folds be safely steamed or ironed out? Thanx much 8o)

    • @ALLJArt
      @ALLJArt  4 года назад +1

      Hey! Yeah, I ironed mine without any issues, if you are worried, you could always put a towel on top of it and iron over it like that but it should be fine. Try low setting on iron first too!

    All J Art, thank you for your video, it's very helpful!
    Could I get some advice from you? I bought a set that is three different canvasses and just one tray of oil paints. I like your idea of thinning the paint down.
    So I guess I should work on all canvasses at the same time, doing the darkest first and moving to the lighter colors?
    Also, I also thought I should stabilize each canvass so I bought some of that foam board to glue them on to before painting. I intended to use adhesive spray.
    Also, I wonder about using oils instead of acrylic paint. If you say I should use the oil paint I have, what do I use to water down the paint with?
    Please give me your thoughts on all this!
    Thank you very much! Your canvas turned out so nice! 😊
