Stupidly I've never thought about what happened to the best bits of railway property when the axe had finally started its journey.
Don't s'pose I've ever wanted to. I put it to the back of my mind and assumed from the evidence of all the decaying station buildings around that opportunistic dog walkers, idle yoofs and general public had helped themselves to what the fellow before had left behind.
To have to be the executioner's assistant/management's lackey/unfortunate sod who got rota'd to do it
must have been difficult to get through.
Even though the first interviewee about this task 1:38 was from a different line, it was still very much a case of "I'm practically digging my own grave here!"
Especially if the BR axe, sack and despatch department of the time didn't have an ounce of gratitude or compassion.
