You have to admit, it was pretty smart of them to offer this kit! knowing that eventually, someone would have cloned this design anyways, Not only does the kit let them stay in the market a little longer but may also attract repeating clients, If one bought this kit and see the potential of a such a gimble, but feels their 3d printed one is not up their needs, they would most likely buy the more expansive aluminum one. It was simply a smart business move on their part and it nice to see!
Thomas Sanladerer yea, I printed the first one in green prusament PETG and it was beautiful but had that twisting a pop bottle sound when I moved it. So thought I’d try some carbon fiber nylon. It’s very rigid and makes much less noise. I just posted a video on my Instagram maybe I’ll put one up here on RUclips as well.
Evropa Pagan no I didn’t but I thought about it. The little rubber pad with the adhesive bottom kind of holds it together. And the carbon fiber nylon is pretty strong.

I built one about 3 weeks ago for a photographer friend. It worked really well, but I had to print at 103% to get it to fit the hardware well. Print one piece first and check the fit!
I love the concept, but the squeaking set off my parrot in a tantrum. I am looking forward to seeing more companies get on board with this idea and seeing what Edelkrone's response is to editing files.
Ortak means "partner" in Turkish, they had a youtube series about developing innovative products such like this one. Its good to see they achieved their goal. Great video btw

I mean the concept of using machined and/or precision parts with printed parts isn't new (most DIY printers or CNCs are made like that after all), but having a known brand and company sell you the kit for you to print the parts IS new. And at a significant discount compared to the regular item price, too! I do hope more companies jump on this, and obviously also hope that we get incremental improvements this way. You can now release an update for a hardware product: either as a part or two with some new files, or just new or improved files to go with the same parts you already sold. Mainstream, here we come?
Now we wait for 3D Printing Nerd to do the same thing :D But I love how different creators represents same product in different way. Love all your videos Thom!

I think they could do something about that squeak, and improve it a LOT. I would LOVE an RC car kit that has an all metal drive line that you print the chassis and plastic parts for it. I think it would be fantastic!
It really does sound like a (not so) simple issue of materials. I think a video comparing the same object in different materials would be a good practical exercise.
Two aluminium shims per joint seems the obvious solution to it squeakyness and difficulty in moving it. Would it squeak so much if it were printed in PETG instead of PLA? PETG seems smoother, I tried a dual colour print by swapping filament at a specific layer, thinking it would be ok to change filament types too, first half PETG, 2nd half PLA - disaster, the PLA didn't stick to the PETG properly and easily broke away.
licensetodrive I printed it in PETG and it squeaks just as bad. Although I also printed on a Prusa Mk3 with the textured bed, maybe that makes the problem worse.
I also think this is really great idea! I am still waiting for my order to arrive. Would be great to see update on usability until then. Could usage of ASA or Nylon instead of PLA improve the situation?

Good complement to Angus' video. Maybe you could try loosening the joints and adding a little graphite. Just a little. That should help with the noise but not make the joints too slippery.

Wonder why they did not just use two headed bushings facing each other with the spacer shim? If they made the head counter bores slightly shallow then the plastic parts never would come in contact with each other.
Directly ordered one when I saw this on Angus' channel. I really like the idea and hope other manufacturers jump on that train. Have you tried PETG? Should be a lot better soundwise and still be plenty strong. Also one can easily print Nylon washers that will lower the friction to an acceptable level. Nice video. Good video as always, Tom. I also printed this in Amazon Basics Premium PLA at 100% and it came out just perfect. Compared to the original I must say, I am pretty impressed with how good everything fits together. I also have the squeek problem when moving parts but I will try PETG and make a comparison.
Seems like you had the exact same issues as I did in my review. And the chinese knocks off are cheaper when you factor in shipping and taxes. Not sure how you could recommend this 3d printed version over an all metal version

Probably have to glue them to the printed parts so the correct surfaces slip. Hmm- This would require modifying the files to allow room... Oh- I am assuming this is how the real product works. I think most proffesionals wont be getting that kit, its simply less hassle to just buy a original one... BUT. It might be good enought that they could be buying already assembled 3d printed ones made out of kit that would be made by hobbyists/3d printing specialists, that would be cheaper than originals but still good enought.
Yeah, some video shop could buy the parts and like and ultimaker/i3, charge a markup and sell it already printed wihle still selling the regular product to those who need an aluminium part
I am pretty sure you can modyfie files for your own usage. As in... thats not really prohibited by law anyway nowhere in the world as far as I am concerned, but I might be wrong.
Doesn't it seem that they'd be cannibalizing the sales of their high end gear by releasing these kits? Or do they consider it the difference between hobbyist market and professional market? Seems like some delrin inserts included for the friction joints would make this part approach the functionality of the machined aluminum version.
Seems edelkrone has learned the lesson that the increasing number of 3d printing people isn't a harassment. Most companies are thinking too conservative and didn't see a market in letting the customer produce a part of the product.
Guessing the 90% infill is so when you drop your expensive camera because your 20% infill version snaps, they can say its your fault because you didn't listen to their recommendation. Companies have to cover themselves after all.
The original parts are dimensioned for aluminium, changing to PLA results in half the stiffness just looking at the material property. Thus the whole assembly will displace more as can be seen in the video. It's shaking all over the place. The thing needs to be redesigned for the intended material and manufacturing process for it to be considered for the same application.

Watched a few courses but didn't like use it all that much. Forgot to cancel and they charged me for the next period. I emailed the next week and they refunded me fully. Terrible company...

I just finished mine in carbon fiber nylon and it turned out great! No squeaky noise, really strong and it works perfectly.

I printed mine in AMZ3D black PLA, and it doesn't squeak whatsoever.

Wouldn't it help if you just roughened the PLA at the joints using some fine abrasive paper?

You can alway use some silicon grease on it to avoid squeaking.
