I disagree. Devo is a much maligned, misunderstood, social protest band born of the Kent State shootings. Yes, the guitars are props, just like everything else on stage, but even the casual observer notices there is more here than meets the ear. Sugestion: read Joko Homo, Heaven Bound and De Evolution.
Devo played in Glasgow in November 1978, during the afternoon a friend of mine (who was going to the concert) was in McCormack's music shop and noticed one of the Devo Bob's trying out a Strat, he bought it and while his tour manager paid for the guitar he took a small hacksaw from his overall pocket and sawed off the top 'horn'. He played that guitar at the Apollo later that evening.
That's an awesome story! I know of that guitar that Bob 1 cut the horn off of and glued it back on in reverse. I never knew the story of it. Thanks for writing the story on here. I really appreciate it! Hope you liked the video!
Great vid, and well-researched! My only suggestion is that the VHS tape effect was distracting, especially when I'm trying to look at the guitars in the clips and it's covering it up.
Yeah just get rid of it! It looks really obviously fake. If you re release the video, that'd be even better. The fact that it persists over the many cuts to the closeup pedal shots, it really doesn't make sense to incorporate.
As of yesterday, I finally made the move to call myself a hardcore Devo fan. I heard a few of their songs on the radio growing up... I loved Whip It. But, never dug into the band’s history and what they were about until later in life. Now, I’m on a quest to learn of their history. Awesome video!
I started at the first album, and stayed for a while until they lost that energy of the first 4. That was the real, imaginative and transgressive gold.
Came to RUclips to get a little Devo fix in the background as I work and found this very geeky, cool little video. It does my old tired heart so much good to see a young guy appreciate the spudboys. Mark bends the notes in Too Much Paranoias, he doesn't slide up the fretboard. Also, I think the left-handed headstock is important for *really* being able to bend that open note during the verse. With that said, this is a video I didn't know I needed in my life until now. Thank you. I'm subscribing.

Great video and amazing research! I was introduced to Devo from that very same SNL performance, but being the old spud I am, I saw it as it aired in 1978. I was an immediate fan from that moment on. Great to see younger generations appreciating them as well - keep up the fine work my fellow spud!!

I've been a punk since I heard the Ramone's first album a friend recorded off a Long Island radio statioin... before it came out. Then Patti Smith's album came out... and then Devo played SNL and just kicked me in the face. I finally got to see a live show of Devo years ago and ... tho the seating restrictions pissed me off.. they were everything I wanted. Some additional info on that odd Satisfaction guitar for the Japan 2005 show. For the 2005 Japan shows, DEVO rented guitars, they didn't ship their usual guitars from the states-just the synths. When they came back to Japan in 2008, they brought their usual guitars along that time.
The Unknown pedal could be an MXR combo pedal as many have said, or possibly part of a radio system, as many late 1970s-early 80s DEVO shows used wireless transmission for the guitars and microphones. Also this is super cool, I'd love to see more deep dives on DEVO specific equipment, they always had the sickest stuff. Look at that awesome teardrop modified Gibson Ripper Jerry used in '78! And the LeBaye 2x4, etc etc Also Ring Modulation is the coolest thing ever.

I remember always being unable to get that classic full Stones studio Satisfaction fuzz. All pedals sounded so corny and thin . Which was no surprise since as I later discovered , the Stones' Satisfaction fuzz was double or even triple tracked ,so it made it sound like a fuzz orchestra . Even the Stones live Satisfaction never sounded as good as the studio version. Since Richards in a live situation had just like us regular punters a simple distortion pedal .
I totally understand! The studio recording after being mixed down is (at times) the best version of a song, especially with the Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction. Even recreating or covering the song live, it’s never going to be perfect, unless (I’m assuming) you crank the knob on a fuzz pedal all the way, but you’ll probably get feedback and it wouldn’t sound as great 😂. This is just my opinion since were on the topic of studio vs live, I’ve always preferred the SNL Recording of DEVO’s Satisfaction cover then the studio version. The vocals sound better, the little guitar solo Mark does sounds better, especially with the little tribute to the Rolling Stones by playing the original riff only a few pitches down. Overall, and ironically, I get satisfaction out of the SNL Recording of DEVO’s Satisfaction cover 😂 probably also because this was my first real exposure to DEVO, besides hearing Whip It and Uncontrollable Urge (on MTV’s Ridiculousness) But you always have to remember the original, that being the first version of the Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.

At around 1:00: 'Originally' by the legendary Otis Redding, composer of and first hit version of 'Satisfaction'. But the Devo version kills with the drums and sick bass line.
I am old enough to remember when this song and the video came out. It was a bomb!! And as soon as I could, I bought the LP (you know that round vinyl thing that emmits music through a needle...). I would have to check, but it might even have been translucent or glow-in-the-dark. And btw: there are no pointless histories when it comes to weird/innovative musical instruments.
There's an interview from the '80s in Keyboard magazine with Jim Mothersbaugh who was their drummer for a while. He later worked on their tech. He described how they came across the Frog pedal and the AC powered ring modulator they previously used that apparently caused people to get shocked.
That would be awesome to find that article! I know of Jim Mothersbaugh and his involvement with DEVO. I remember seeing him play the drums and act in "The Beginning was the End" short film that they made. I heard he also created the first ever electronic drums. Very interesting. I also heard about the Frequency Analyzer pedal occasionally shocking Mark M. when he had it duct taped on the Telecaster from an interview with the late Bob 2. That's painfully funny! Landestroy 741 At 2:54, I believe that is an MXR Distortion + Pedal, I wasn’t aware until recently. Eventually, I would like to do a follow up video with new information.
I know sh*t all about guitar playing but for some reason I know that the little trick used on Too Much Paranoias (index finger above the nut) is also used by Tony Iommi on one of Sabbath's songs (I think the opening of War Pigs) bending the string above the nut as well...I don't know why I know this but I do. Weird...
Sorry for the late response. It is a weird trick they use. I'm still learning how to play guitar at the time I'm writing this. I always thought it was the whammy bar, but after seeing a video close up on one the Too Much Paranoias performances, you can see Mark bending the string above the nut. Weird but cool sound. I saw Devo at Desert Daze this year without really knowing anything about them at the time and now I'm watching everything I can about them. I didn't know Fred Armisen had played with them and was a friend. Coincidentally Fred Armisen was also at Desert Daze doing a standup set but didn't play with Devo.
Sorry for the late response. That must have been an awesome show! I was supposed to go see DEVO play at Radio City Music Hall in 2021. Unfortunately, they cancelled last minute, due to COVID 19. Hey Jack! Sorry I’m late answering your question. The articles at 2:56 was from a German Newspaper clipping being sold on Ebay, and at 3:12 its an article I believe from Japan, can’t recall where that one was from.
I always thought "the unknown peddle" was an Electro Harmonics Electric Mistress taped to Mark's guitar. But then again, if that were so Mark must of had one f'ing long extention cord to power it.
I think you’re thinking of the Frequency Analyzer Ring Mod pedal. That pedal and the Original Electric Mistress have the same casing. I think Mark did have to use a long extension cable when using the ring mod, since there was no battery powered option. I did see somewhere that now you can mod a frequency analyzer to power it on two 9 volt batteries. Not sure how good that’ll work though. As for the unknown pedal, I made a follow up to this episode and found out that the unknown pedal could possibly be Electro Harmonix’s The Silencer. Sorry for the late response. I was experimenting with the VHS effect at the time. I had it stretched to 16:9 purposely to fit in the video. Mixing the old with the new. Apparently the Hagstrom isnt a Hagstrom 1. Its something called a Hagstrom Kent PB-24-G which i cant tell the difference between that and a Hagstrom 1 but it’s different somehow

Shane Ellis I don’t think it is. The headstock is different between the RD Artist and the Firebird. I found some more info recently through pictures. It does appear to be a Firebird guitar that was half cut, however, I’m not sure if it is a Gibson or Ibanez. Ibanez made their own Firebird guitar, which caused a lawsuit. DEVO’s guitarist Bob 1 Mothersbaugh was known for using Ibanez guitars between 1979 to 1980. I put two and two together between the information, but it’s still unclear what guitar Mark used during that Paris show. Thanks for watching my video! Much appreciated! 🤙

It could be anything. Remember Mark was a personal friend of Moog, and has a ton of weird prototype hardware that never made it to market.

I remember always being unable to get that classic full Stones studio Satisfaction fuzz. All pedals sounded so corny and thin .
Which was no surprise since as I later discovered , the Stones' Satisfaction fuzz was double or even triple tracked ,so it made it sound like a fuzz orchestra . Even the Stones live Satisfaction never sounded as good as the studio version. Since Richards in a live situation had just like us regular punters a simple distortion pedal .
I totally understand! The studio recording after being mixed down is (at times) the best version of a song, especially with the Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction. Even recreating or covering the song live, it’s never going to be perfect, unless (I’m assuming) you crank the knob on a fuzz pedal all the way, but you’ll probably get feedback and it wouldn’t sound as great 😂. This is just my opinion since were on the topic of studio vs live, I’ve always preferred the SNL Recording of DEVO’s Satisfaction cover then the studio version. The vocals sound better, the little guitar solo Mark does sounds better, especially with the little tribute to the Rolling Stones by playing the original riff only a few pitches down. Overall, and ironically, I get satisfaction out of the SNL Recording of DEVO’s Satisfaction cover 😂 probably also because this was my first real exposure to DEVO, besides hearing Whip It and Uncontrollable Urge (on MTV’s Ridiculousness) But you always have to remember the original, that being the first version of the Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.

I am old enough to remember when this song and the video came out. It was a bomb!! And as soon as I could, I bought the LP (you know that round vinyl thing that emmits music through a needle...). I would have to check, but it might even have been translucent or glow-in-the-dark. And btw: there are no pointless histories when it comes to weird/innovative musical instruments.

There's an interview from the '80s in Keyboard magazine with Jim Mothersbaugh who was their drummer for a while. He later worked on their tech. He described how they came across the Frog pedal and the AC powered ring modulator they previously used that apparently caused people to get shocked.
That would be awesome to find that article! I know of Jim Mothersbaugh and his involvement with DEVO. I remember seeing him play the drums and act in "The Beginning was the End" short film that they made. I heard he also created the first ever electronic drums. Very interesting. I also heard about the Frequency Analyzer pedal occasionally shocking Mark M. when he had it duct taped on the Telecaster from an interview with the late Bob 2. That's painfully funny! I know sh*t all about guitar playing but for some reason I know that the little trick used on Too Much Paranoias (index finger above the nut) is also used by Tony Iommi on one of Sabbath's songs (I think the opening of War Pigs) bending the string above the nut as well...I don't know why I know this but I do. Weird...
Sorry for the late response. It is a weird trick they use. I'm still learning how to play guitar at the time I'm writing this. I always thought it was the whammy bar, but after seeing a video close up on one the Too Much Paranoias performances, you can see Mark bending the string above the nut. Weird but cool sound. I saw Devo at Desert Daze this year without really knowing anything about them at the time and now I'm watching everything I can about them. I didn't know Fred Armisen had played with them and was a friend. Coincidentally Fred Armisen was also at Desert Daze doing a standup set but didn't play with Devo.
Sorry for the late response. That must have been an awesome show! I was supposed to go see DEVO play at Radio City Music Hall in 2021. Unfortunately, they cancelled last minute, due to COVID 19. Was looking forward to seeing them. Fred Armisen was given the chance to play drums with DEVO in 2018. I think the current drummers for DEVO were unavailable. Hope you enjoyed my video! I always thought "the unknown peddle" was an Electro Harmonics Electric Mistress taped to Mark's guitar. But then again, if that were so Mark must of had one f'ing long extention cord to power it.
I think you’re thinking of the Frequency Analyzer Ring Mod pedal. That pedal and the Original Electric Mistress have the same casing. I think Mark did have to use a long extension cable when using the ring mod, since there was no battery powered option. I did see somewhere that now you can mod a frequency analyzer to power it on two 9 volt batteries. Not sure how good that’ll work though. As for the unknown pedal, I made a follow up to this episode and found out that the unknown pedal could possibly be Electro Harmonix’s The Silencer. Why VHS effect stretched to 16:9?
Sorry for the late response. I was experimenting with the VHS effect at the time. I had it stretched to 16:9 purposely to fit in the video. Mixing the old with the new. Apologies if the effect was distracting. The new episodes have the VHS effect, just not throughout the whole video. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Apparently the Hagstrom isnt a Hagstrom 1. Its something called a Hagstrom Kent PB-24-G which i cant tell the difference between that and a Hagstrom 1 but it’s different somehow

Is that unknown guitar an RD Artist?
Shane Ellis I don’t think it is. The headstock is different between the RD Artist and the Firebird. I found some more info recently through pictures. It does appear to be a Firebird guitar that was half cut, however, I’m not sure if it is a Gibson or Ibanez. Ibanez made their own Firebird guitar, which caused a lawsuit. DEVO’s guitarist Bob 1 Mothersbaugh was known for using Ibanez guitars between 1979 to 1980. I put two and two together between the information, but it’s still unclear what guitar Mark used during that Paris show. Thanks for watching my video! Much appreciated! 🤙
