This is my absolute favourite song in DEH. I think it’s a wonderful arrangement and representation of trying to do the “right thing” and the “hard thing” of moving on from grief but realising you’re never gonna move on from it. The other realisation is that the glove is his son…he thought as a father if he just kept pushing and persevering with his son he would change because that method has worked for him his whole life and then for only a second we see him realise he was wrong (for a kid that’s lost control). Suddenly him saying “you do the hard thing cause that’s the right thing” is now almost a failure and a joke a testament to just how much he as a father missed the point and no amount of perseverance is going to bring him back. The composition isn’t obvious and I feel for anyone who has suffered intense grief it makes so much sense…that feeling of having to “save face”.

Ashlie Camarena agreed but Pasek and Paul could’ve written a better song than baseball glove lol. The Murphy family AND Evan have zero connection to baseball, and somehow Connor’s dad just has a glove he bought because he thought his son would play catch with him even though there was zero indication that anyone cares about baseball in that show lol
Tbh I don't rly like the sound of it either, but the song itself was quite important for the storyline and to be able to understand the characters better.
Sarah Tapler I think we have the opposite views lol. I saw DEH twice and imo this song did nothing for the story that another, better themed song cannot do. What I mean is that another better written song should’ve taken this song’s place to further the plot. This baseball glove is almost irrelevant to the rest of the story lol.
