Those kids do genuinely perceive this government as Fascist and have used the poem in that context. The irony is, this is a democratically elected government. The first time in decades, the country has given someone a majority. That means they have been given the mandate to implement the promises made in their manifesto. Of course, not everyone will be happy. Thats not possible...we are all different. That’s called democracy, also. I understand that the Government have managed this series of changes and the ongoing narrative very poorly. The government should have used some empathy and basic sensitivity with this group of stakeholders, but that’s about it...nothing more than that. One does not have to believe or agree with everything an author says. I don’t think I have found any political / social commentator that I entirely agree with!
And, the fact that someone is a Bhagoda, makes no difference to how I perceive the validity of the viewpoints and arguments they put forward. It’s irrelevant - it does not discount the weight of the arguments they present.
I am assessing him on what he has to say, not on what was done to him because of his ideas by some society. In the same way, I don’t care for Malala one bit. A nobel prize had made no difference to how I perceive her viewpoints. She has lost her credibility due to her celebrity status and she makes lightweight observations.
On the other hand, Tareq Fateh has some very important points to make. I don’t take everything he says as gospel because he has his biases (he is human just like all of us). I am thankful to him because he has added to my knowledge about some aspects of the history of Pakistan, how Indian tolerance is interpreted in Pakistan as weakness of the Hindus, what happened in Bangladesh, the difference between the pious, decent, thinking Muslims, the Islamic supremacist and the misguided masses.
Thanks to him, I understand the difference between these groups. Otherwise, I was committing the horrible mistake of putting everyone in one basket. Now, I am able to distinguish between these broad groups and I am thankful for that. He also shows the mirror to Indians with the same courage as he shows to others. That’s great!
