I think its more that astrid has always had a softer side to her but she has these thick walls put up that keep her from it in the beginning. As she grows as a character and as hiccup brings put the best in her, she becomes not only more comfortable with who she is, but more willing to express it. In the Netflix series, Race To The Edge, she's still wearing her original tomboy outfit, but her Character itself is what's changing, becoming more adult, more gentle, and more loving. Astrid had a huge maternal streak that comes out in that series, and it doesnt detract in the slightest from her battle axe weilding badassery. She can be both but through the movies shes growing more comfortable with the elements of her that she hid as a kid when she thought she had to be a perfect viking warrior who killed anyone who crossed her.
i feel like this was more of a reason that Stoick died. Although he still had armor. But Hiccu realized that there is still a possibilty although he had strong connection with the dragons. He saw what the Alpha can do
And she braids his hair! So he starts out weak, no armor, no braids She starts out touch, with armor, and tight braids They both influence each other. He brings out her softer side, symbolized through the hair and outfit changes (note that she does still retain some of her armor, so its not like shes completely different). Meanwhile she brings out his tougher side and encourages him to be a better leader, symbolized by her braiding his hair.
I would like to specially mention that Astrid would have put walls up not only because they lived in war with dragons, but she kinda half watched her uncle get eaten by a flightmare, her dragon nearly killed, her parents house burned down various times, it also exploded (lucky they werent home) so yk I think she just had a healthy relationship where she was able to unpack herself and her psychological damage with Hiccup. She’s not really portrayed as aggressive believe it or not, just protective, she wants to protect her parents her villiage, hiccup, her friends, their children, her dragon, etc, she’s a loyal warrior and this is apparent even before her gradual lowering of her walls for Hiccup.
@@mmaq3659 it’s seen pretty blatantly through observation of her actions and how she constantly reacts to Hiccup and his advances to spare dragons in the first movie, her willingness to support him in both shows and the further two movies so much so she’s willing to die in battle against dragons or hunter with him, she is protective of him, and her village, even when she doesnt like Hiccup he’s apart of her clan, and her clan is her jurisdiction to protect, her aggravation is a byproduct of the climate they lived in for all their lives, killing dragons.
I watched all 3 last night. And the moment when hiccup releases toothless was so sad, the removing of his hand being an exact reversal of when toothless accepted him as his master/friend
tbh i really like Astrid from httyd 2 but i love rtte version the most, not just because of the design (which is pretty simple but she still looks tough and badass), but also for her personality and character development, i think rtte was the best at introducing everyone
httyd 2 is just my favorite in general i love when toothless becomes the alpha or wtv idc if that sounds weird but i also just loved toothless and hiccups relationship. lowkey the 3rd movie made me mad..
It the live action made Astrids hair like ur has been shit on and never washed disgusting. I can never forgive them for ruining such a beautiful character just for their woke bullshit
if you look at her hairstyle in the second movie you will notice that it is very similar to what Heather had, events from the second movie takes place after RTTE and she had an amazing bond with Heather, she was still tough but also very kind and loving to her, they were besties, and since RTTE was the last time we saw Heather, this hairstyle propably reminds Astrid of her, she has a soft side for Heather too
I remember telling a friend I wasn't a big fan of braids, unless its similar to certain styles, as well as Astrid’s. She didn't know who that was or what it looked like, so I sent pictures. She was able to tell me in depth the style name and stuff like that. Good times.
I fell in love with a girl that I had known since I was 8. We always loved watching HTTYD together because we were like Hiccup and Astrid. She died a year ago right at 17, but I will never forget the time we had together.
Maybe being a gentle wife isn't a requirement for any woman and they should have individual personalities while still being loving and caring in their own way without affecting their whole personality...
But why do women always have to loose their tomboyness and fighter attitude when they meet their partner...like she could've gotten warmer and kinder without becoming much more feminine
She was femme in the first movie. She's a viking, she kills, she's aggressive because if she threw flowers at the dragons that'd make her end offed. She still rocked a great image, they don't seem to know what it is a real masculine girl apparently. She was a femenine viking all along. Sometimes people surprises me what concepts of feminity and masculinity they have from people. It's like seeing a man dressing in pink and purple and automatically say he is femme when his attitude and life style is nowhere close to it... she's the same. She's tough bc she had to fight to survive like everyone else against beasts. She is femme, she always has been. They see her not lift up her axe and not yell anymore and think that was a masculine trait? By that logic we could say hiccup was a lil princess bc he hated fighting and he was calm and soft, since we love to say sth is femme or masc when it isnt
Because she became a mother and didn’t need to worry about either dragons or warlords trying to conquer her home anymore so she chilled out quite a bit
8/50 commenting on therian, alterhuman, furry, otherkin/otherhearted, ninjago, httyd and dragon puppet vids to get them on my fyp!! I actually never noticed!! Ty for the new information!!
The reason i love astrids character is because she was always more capable than hiccup but it never took away from how cool he was in other ways. Astrid could solo anyone from berk but she doesnt have to because hiccup was able to tame fucking dragons and then safely get said dragons out of harms way while having his mother come back, his father die and he has to become the new chief. And through all of this astrid is the strong character keeping hiccup centred while he has to confront his emotions and move on while not ready, whoever wrote astrid in these movies better be involved in the live action one
I feel like she loses all personality after the first one. My biggest gripe about the movies after how to train your dragon 1 is that the plot becomes more about he dragons than character development
Its like Elsa. Elsa wears a tight Royal bun because she is still not free, when she sings "Let it go" her hair changes into braid as she embrace her powers, Then at the End of Frozen 2, her hair is now completely free and finally free and embrace her power as the fifth spirit.

The blunt blonde bangs, blue shirt, armored shoulders. Then they don't really take that away from her, they just add more depth to it, like making her bangs look softer, adding in some warmer colors, and adding fur and softer textures to balance the armor.
