    at the far left of the screen you have Main Memory ( is it RAM? or Virtual Memory?) and in the middle you have Physical Memory (RAM again?) we know that the main memory is physical memory...i'm a bit confused .do we have 2 seperate RAMS or is the
    main memory actually the Virtual Memory? Thanks in advance for your effort sir!

      Both are actually main memory i.e physical ram. He is explaining in a step by step cycle so it seems different. Here the states represented by the main memory and physical memory are not the same states even though the RAM itself is same. When the page fault occurs, the ram originally doesn't contain the requested page reference. SO after fetching from the disk it is placed in the main memory in step 4. But the executing program still doesn't know WHERE inside the ram this page is. This is solved by updating the page table as in step 6. In step 6 the page that was fetched in step 4 isn't moved to another location/memory but just its reference is updated in the page table of the process so that the process can now know where to fetch the frame from memory. Hope this clears your doubt.

    Does page fault happen even if there is infinite amount of ram?

    • @AyushRaj-sf3ug
      @AyushRaj-sf3ug 6 лет назад +3

      its practically not possible......how come you think of RAM as infinte.....if RAM is infinite ....we dont need such os concepts.....its basically RAM, which is limited . so that is the reason we develop concepts to deal with limited amount of RAM...

      you missed if from the statement above! for n no of pages if there are n no of page frames, there is no necessity of replacing any pages from the main memory!
