    I am working on my second rack since I didn't get to use the first.Thanx for the inspiration . It is just as easy as you stated. a person could build these all day and it's nothing to add felt covering and corners,and wheel for that matter.

    Thanks! I'm actually working (this very week) on building a new rack, which is quite a bit larger. I'm documenting this with video, so I'll be posting a new video soon about the differences/improvements between building that and this one. I don't have a table saw so for this rack (and the one I'm building now) I made my cuts with a Portland Saw hand saw. They're inexpensive quality tools, and while it takes practice to make straight, square cuts by hand, personally I find it satisfying.

    Great video! The only improvement I can suggest is using pre-drilled guide-holes and screws rather than nails.

    Excellent work and video.. I recently bought a bookshelf that is 38" wide capable to hold 2 side by side rack units once I modify it for weight and fit It should do the trick. I should have looked for your video sooner for better ideas under $100. This bookshelf set me back about $75.

    @buewgewstmeiers I actually finished building the speaker cab almost a year ago, but at the time this video was getting so few views I didn't think anyone would really be interested in seeing a video with pictures of a speaker cab build. The cab came out beautifully though, and I may be building another soon, in which case I'll probably document that and put it up here.

    Thank you! I actually just built a new rack that I switched over to yesterday, and I documented the build with video this time, so I should have a full video about it up soon!

    Cool,
    Man I so thought the outside was what was gonna be black. You could probly make bank building those and selling them on eBay!
    Makes me wonna get some rack units so I'd have a reason to build one.
    It really ended up looking great!

    @buewgewstmeiers An update for you, I'm actually building another speaker cab, this time a 4x10 (to go with my new 70s Fender Bassman!). I'll be documenting the whole process with pictures and/or video, from materials to construction to tolexing to final details. I'm building it with my grandfather over the few days I'll spend with family for Christmas, then I'll finish it on my own. The video will be up in January, most likely early/mid January.

    I'm thinking about building my own rack, too, and this video is great! I'm curious to know if you ever made a video about the second rack you made, I didn't find it browsing through your posts but I'm curious to know about the improvements you made and how it all looked in the end.

      Michael Reaves thanks for the reminder! I need to put that video together soon. The newer rack has been in business since I made it and holds up against a rack you'd buy. I'll try to get it together and I'll let you know when I post it!

    The point of the straight parts on the bottom is to give room for the rack gear, which is at an angle, to fit as it angles toward the back, but it shouldn't hurt anything to not have those parts, you just might not be able to put a piece of rack gear at the very bottom of the rack because the back of the piece would hit the bottom of the rack, if that makes sense. Rear rails are a good idea. I'm going to need to build a new or bigger rack soon, the one I built here is getting full.

    The angle is just whatever you want it to be so the gear is positioned comfortably for use with your desk/setup. For mine it's 27" tall, 13" deep on bottom, 8" deep on top, which makes the angle 285 degrees. But you can make it any angle, all you need to do is changed the depth of the top accordingly and draw a line from the top of the straight part (8" tall on mine) to the new top. I also have castors on mine, I just figured people could figure out what they wanted to do about those themselves!

    The nails look better than screws. If I ever do something like this, I will consider setting the nails and using some wood filler to hide them.

    Hows the speaker cabinet coming?

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @DrUmSensitive I'm not completely sure what you're saying the issue is..you put gear into the rack using rack screws, they're a standard screw that fit in the threads in the rail. Hold up the piece of gear, line up the holes in it with the threads in the rail, put a the screws in, tighten them, and it's in.

    Handsome looking rack and very informative. I built a very similar rack myself a couple of years ago for my studio. Mine has wheels so I can move it easily--even though it rarely moves from its position next to my desk. Overall great video. P.S. Leaning guitars against amps instead of putting on a guitar stand is a great way to have your instrument get damaged... Just my 2 cents. Thanks again for a great video.

    • @jessegimbel
      @jessegimbel  10 лет назад

      Since this video I've built a new rack to house more equipment, I went with castors too. That one is built a lot more sturdily and is finished much nicer. I documented the build and I'll be putting together a video for that as well. And about the guitar, that's probably the only time in my life I've ever leaned a guitar instead of putting it on a stand, I don't know that it should be a major takeaway from this rack video. I'm a stickler about putting guitars on stands and when I'm recording bands I'm constantly reminding everyone to use the stands I put in front of them rather than leaning them or putting them on the floor, it's amazing how people don't think to use them even when they're seeing the stand all day.

    Until recently I worked for a local live production company that rented out audio, video, and lighting. We also did installs for churches, corporations, and local business. If you are looking for rack rail and want them cut to a certain length, I would recommend contacting a local production company to see if they can help you. They get them in bulk and may be able to give you a better deal. Just an FYI.

    • @jessegimbel
      @jessegimbel  10 лет назад

      Thanks for the tip Adam Hartley! I haven't had a use for bulk rack rails since I've only got space for one rack right now, but it's good to know for future building. I've built a new, more sturdy and bigger rack since making this video, I've just got to find the time to put the video together and get it uploaded, it'll happen some time in the next few months. Thanks again for the tip, I appreciate it!

    @11219tt You're very welcome! I've got a similar video that I'm working on showing how I built a 4x10 speaker cab for my 70's Fender Bassman. It'll probably be the same kind of format, I hope you enjoy that too!

    Do you know whats the measurements to build a basic squared rack case? I just need the inside measurement.

    • @jessegimbel
      @jessegimbel  10 лет назад

      Rack gear is 19" wide so that's your interior width. One rack unit is 1.75" tall, so that multiplied by however many units you want it to house. The depth only needs to be as deep as your deepest rack gear with cords attached, if you want it to hide your cords. The rack I'm using now that I built is 12" deep from the rails, but has an extra 3" in front of the rails so knobs don't stick out past the front. So 15" deep for mine, yours can be whatever depth you want.

  • @DrUmSensitive
    @DrUmSensitive 13 лет назад

    I'm having a real hard time with a similar rack. How do you screw the gear together with the rack?!?! Do you use screws and nuts? Because that is the worst method in the world, if you plan to take gear out and put it back in, sometimes. There is not enough place for the fingers, and it is really a pain in the ass to do it.
    If you have a better solution, I would really like to hear it... :/

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @DrUmSensitive Ah, that's a shame. Yes all rack rails have threaded holes. They're widely available online, just searching "rack rails", and not too expensive. The rack rails that are built in when you buy a rack have threads also. It definitely seems like it would be a pain to have to use nuts for them. But it seems like if you're in a place that you could buy gear to go in a rack you could also find rack rails. Good luck!

    • @jessegimbel
      @jessegimbel  11 лет назад

      The rack is a 12u rack, and I built it myself. If you're talking about the rails, I bought them from Amazon I believe, or Sweetwater. They sell them at most any online music store. I have a new rack I built that is bigger and sturdier so I'll be posting a video on that soon.

    I will admit I am a terrible carpenter and may end up buying a ready-made rack, but this definitely is making me consider building one. I never got how certain pieces of 'studio gear' - or certain things in general - are so goddamn expensive for what seems to be no good reason at all.
    I mean, I literally bought four pieces of used rackmount gear for gear less than the cost of a used 6-unit rack. What the fuck?

    • @jessegimbel
      @jessegimbel  10 лет назад

      Absolutely. I've built a new rack now that I'll be posting a video about eventually, and I've got some smooth castors on the bottom. It'd be tough to move it without them!

  • @DrUmSensitive
    @DrUmSensitive 13 лет назад

    Oh, so the rail has threads? Hm. Well, that would be perfect, if I could buy one, but I can't, where I live. Only with 1/4" holes...
    Thanks anyway...
