Just to expand on the “I can’t afford art supplies” excuse: many artists start out in the same place! They start off without a collection of supplies and slowly build them up over time. That’s how you get the artists with twenty watercolour sets and fifty opinions on different pencils. Personally, I started my art collection with a nice pencil I stole from my mom, a cheap sketchbook from Michaels, and a six-pack of Copic markers that I got with a coupon and a very brave leap of faith. Before that I had nothing. Five years later, I own a watercolor set, loads of acrylic paint, too many damn markers, and plenty of ink to play with! But that came over time. For you it might be starting with the cheapest watercolours you can afford. Or maybe you begin with a pack of sharpies from the Dollar Store. In the end it’s not about beginning with a collection, it’s just about beginning.

If I ever feel bad about my work, I compare it to my work from when I was 9. I have a sketchbook from when I was 9 that I kept around for who knows what reason, sentimental value.
I recommend it to anyone. Keep your first memorable proud work, around 10-11 years old, and compare it to now. You will always feel better about yourself if you do that, because you can see how far you've come compared to your childhood self.
This is so true. I recently found my old sketchbooks from high school. I’ve definitely come along way in my art 👍🏻
Yeah, I do that too; I have a whole folder of work filled with drawings dating back as early as May 2010. If I ever need a pick-me-up about my work or to see how far I've come, I flip through that and lemme tell you, my GOD have my anatomy skills improved SO MUCH from when I was 14-15 yrs! XD
@@JessyScribblez I call my face shape from my childhood the "potato faces" because they all literally look like potatoes, so I completely feel this. XD
I'm great at excuses! My room/ storage area/ studio is so cluttered and chaotic, it often bogs me down creatively. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the disorganization, and I tend to not feel like doing much of anything. I just go into shut-down mode and start thinking "I gotta do something about this room, then I'll feel more like making things." I get all up into trying to purge crap I don't really need and make better use of the space, so creative time suffers.
Then other times, I do feel creative and feel like my energy should be more focused on creating art than cleaning up, etc. So I have ended many days feeling like I hadn't accomplished nearly as much as I wanted to. It's a vicious cycle.
"I'm too depressed to draw...." Draw it. Paint it. Mold it. I'll draw an odd shape that feels like it and shade it in and give it depth and contours with a regular pencil on a piece of scrap or printer paper. It's rough and I have to force myself sometimes. It took a while to do it but after so many times of that excuse, I got tired of it and determined to face it down.
Exactly,I have 6 kids from 1-13 I homeschool them as well yet I still chisel out time to "art" and my kids usually join in with their own projects. Or try and give me ideas for my own. Thanks for your videos!!

Alternatively to excuse number 8, “I’m an art school dropout.” It makes you feel really useless despite the fact that art school is just too expensive, and not being born rich won’t disqualify you from being an artist.
I use my chronic fatigue and my carpel tunnel as an excuse some times ... then I remember that if I don't get my art career going ... i'll have to go back to working retail when my son starts his first year of school! ... and that's when the creativity flows! LOL!
Yes! I do that too. I use my RA as an excuse but I'm getting better at fighting that. :)
I live with a rare condition called idiopathic anaphylaxis. This means I can literally drop dead any second without any warning. I have no control over this condition. I've had to rethink how I live my life which makes it extremely difficult to do simple things like driving myself to the store alone. But I'm not about to let my current condition rule me. As long as I have life, I'm working on my art. Please keep working on yours...dont quit...you'll not regret it. ♡
No excuses?!? But I've gotten so good at it. LOL! They say adversity does not build character, it reveals it. How one handles one's excuses is a revelation.
My excuse for the last 14 days is; I built myself a plywood kayak - It still required to be Painted - So I did paint something. Have a nice trip.
My 2 excuses I'm guilty of saying..
"My dog demands my attention" & "My husband is asleep (in the opposite room to my studio) from working the night shift, I have to be quiet"
I do that with my cat, too. I feel guilty for ignoring her...
A local, well known artist where I live started painting on whatever surface she could find and used old house paint people were throwing away. If the desire is there, it will find a way.
I had the worst insecurity and thought my art was never good enough. One day I took all my supplies out and just said to myself, "Its OK to ruin things, if I waste paint and canvas, so be it", and the artwork I made that day is still one of my favorites. So I just go with that mentality everyday and just have fun, if something great comes out, great! But then, I do have contests and shows that are themed and have to go a little out of my fun to fit the theme.

I'm 46. I went self employed with my art yesterday. It feels great to finally start up. I totally agree with this video. Stop making excuses and just give it a go. You have nothing to loose, and everything to gain.
You just popped up.love the back and foreground interaction. Very engaging. Art is life! In nursing used adjectives freely was told should be writer. Bought the house of a Gardner and learned from her in the 7yrs after her death. Made my own clothes because am too tall and too cheap. Bed spread cotton thread was cheap so crocheted snowflakes for gifts and filet crochet panels to barter for chairs. Felt shattered so did assemblege pieces of all scale. Couldn't figure life out so wrote a lot more. Got angry at disorder in my life so made a bunch of grapevine wreaths. Got hungry and tried something new with what grows in the yard..pear raisin pie and steamed plantain (weed). Scraps of yarn became a blanket, scrap of wood a dove in flight and a bench. Life is art.

I hope you don't mind me speaking a little here. I have been an stylist/educator in the Cosmetology industry for 43 years. In my classrooms I can remembering hearing every excuse in the book for why they felt they were not successful in their quest to be a hairstylist. But in my travels I met many educators with more years experience than I had and one of them made a comment that I have never forgotten and used it as my theme all through my career and it has carried me the past 2 years with art. he told me when I was that young stylist trying figure out how to make it and giving all kinds of excuses why I couldn't, that; "If there is a will there is always a way." Think about that for a moment. Every artist, hairstylist, or want to be anything already has half that equation... THE WILL! I started painting in my mid 60's, I turned to RUclips for art education and Rafi is one of the best motivators I've come to find on the Internet.
Eight months into painting I was advised by a RUclips art instructor that I wasn't ready for festival/show selling, he told me to wait at least 3 years otherwise I would be setting myself up for failure. (my first ever art festival 8 months into my art career I made over $2,000 and people who bought from me thought it was amazing that I had only been painting 8 months). The reason why I I did it, was because of tips and instructions and ideas from folks like Rafi and Klee. I listened to their videos and followed some of their ideas and tips and headed full steam into doing what I wanted to do from the beginning because I had that first part of the equation. THE WILL!!! And if someone wants to try to talk you out of doing something or they talk about your art not good enough here is what I say to that.... "At least they are talking about it and that can't be all bad." They might tell someone about your art and how terrible it is but the person they are telling this to just might someone who buys a piece from you!!! Safe travels you two!!!
When I was working I bought all kinds of supplies. When i couldn't work any more I would say i don't have ideas, so l got pictures from the internet and started drawing.
The other stuff got all set up and still no ideas.
10 minutes a day mandatory in that room, l didn't have to do anything. 4 days in I just started making things, I went on you tube and got outside. I work on things everyday, usually 6 or 8 hours. Think about what your buying that you don't really need. Make saving money a hobby.
And if you watch tv, not only is it bad for your creativity, it means you have time. Have fun
Way to go with your book! God bless you and bless your book sales. Thanks for all of the videos. I too started with cheap paints, brushes and paper. I still use the cheap brushes and paint but use canvases now. I just like the cheap paint and the cheap brushes work great. No excuses.
I recommend the book “turning pro” for anyone with these struggles. It is coming from a writing perspective, but definitely applies to cultivating an artistic practice! Kicked my ass into gear! Great vid guys!!!!
Whenever I don't feel like drawing, I try to create something in a different Medium, wether it's paint,or foam, or maybe it's colored pencils, I just try to make SOMETHING even if I really don't feel like it, usually I end up feeling better by the end of it and even make more! Once I made some key chains out of yarn and cardboard and I was so proud of it! keep making and creating guys! :D

I'm 33 years old and often feel like I am too old to start working on art, but about a month ago I decided to just sit down and start drawing and begin trying new things. I've dabbled in ceramics and acrylics for years, but always fell back on the old "Well I have no talent" thing in the past, but the idea of relying solely on talent really takes away from the hard work that creatives put into honing their crafts. It's easy to think professional artists are relying on pure talent because you just see their A game, and watching youtube artists (like you two!) has really helped me to see that, though natural talent can have an impact for some people, it is largely the hard work they put in to perfecting their craft. Anyone can put in time and hard work. Even me. Even in my 30s.
I always had those exact 13 excuses, this video was so directed to my artistic heart that, I paused the video, went to Instagram, created my artistic channel (is about 5 minutes old). Guys thank you so much. I'll start taking pictures of some of my drawings and paintings and post them there. Your were the final kick I needed to start.
You two are very positive and so kind to everyone! So realistic! Sometimes (someone close to me ) will say, just go back to your craft room.. or all you did today was cut and glue paper.. etc. This person is very supportive also, but sometimes when they are bored or in a bad mood, downplays my art. Even if it's not museum quality. I just do it to make people smile and give myself something to do. But that person also shows off everything I make and is very supportive in other ways. I really want to take a copic class but its $350! I feel like I would be investing in myself, they thing its just a coloring class. Idk, they are not a bad person my any means. Just gets me irritated sometimes. You both are great though! I'm glad I found your channel recently with the Etsy video! I know you don't want to talk about it much, but please keep us informed if you learn anything new. Thanks!
Truth! Many people start at retirement, when they have more time to make art and possibly decide to start a creative business!
The best advice I got was to quit talking about it and just do it. Y’all are awesome.
My only excuse was that I didn’t want to do anything else, I had to create. Never had an excuse to not create.
My excuses were time and money. I finally got started this year (New Years resolution). It’s going slow but I’m happy with what I’ve produced so far. I’m having fun trying different things and finding my style. Thanks for your videos! They’ve been extremely encouraging.

I have done fun raiser for myself at church, also don't hesitate to pass the word among your friends that you have art for sale, big one is also affordable... Have things at different price points. I started when I was 60 years young. Total great tips.... At the end of the day- it's about how determine you are about creating- Klee and Rafi you guys are awesome, legit tips and points of views. Thank you.
You two are simply marvelous folks who share and inspire all of us to get up off that thing and create. Your videos are not just for those who draw or paint. They are for anyone who creates in any medium. I work with fabric and epoxy clay. I am also just starting, 60 years old, work only part time (not by choice) and am on a VERY limited budget. I use coupons, thrift shops and stupid-fall-in-it luck to get what I need. I took my things and literally walked into local shops to sell my stuff. I am now in FOUR local shops because I had the balls to just walk in a shop and hawk my goods (yup, the shop owners were a bit surprised).
Side note: Klee said: " even our family didn't care. " Boy Klee, that hit close to home. Some of my family cares, but not enough to really support me. It frankly sucks eggs. Creative people can be so passionate about every little thing, but those "normal squares" out there can't see how exciting each little step can be. It is so disappointing to have an idea and hype yourself up about how awesome an idea it is, just to tell your family or friends and they look at you like you just grew a third ear on your face. It has been a long time since I was stationed in Pensacola and it amazes me that any kind of artist could make any kind of a decent living there. Times have changed. Jerry Saltz had an article in New York magazine last November that addresses all these issues (and more). Very entertaining and inspirational. Guys aside from the fact that I know this is 2 years old I can't tell you how much I appreciate you too because I've just found you. I'm 67 going on 68 I retired three years ago, I spent most My Life as a costume designer costumer and work at UCLA in the costume Department came to hate it. I went I was an art major at San Francisco State, and I should have gone into Arthur minute I left that school and I didn't. Lately I've been really criticizing my artwork and I've been criticizing the fact that I'm 67 going on 68, and today you have just a dispelled that and told me to stop and I needed to hear that. I thank you for that guys. God bless.

Rafi and Klee thanks so much for your video. I started the week thinking no one cares about my work and then decided to challenge myself to create a portrait a day for the next 15 days. My project begins tomorrow. I agree with Klee whenever I'm low, I just push myself to keep creating. I think oftentimes we are our worst critic and we need to shut that part up so we can listen to our hearts and just create. Thanks as always for what you both do. ♡♡♡

I just ignored all the excuses in my head and entered five paintings for exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair! First time my art will be on display, ever.

I always knew I was creative, but have to admit I did use the excuse that I didn't have time. Mind you it would have been difficult when I was on the road 12 hours a day, and living in the cab. I did take a notebook with me though, and write. Now I am surrounded with my textile art materials and it's heaven. Great video, and I like the way that Klee is now up front and you work as a team on these videos. Lots of lurv ilona xxx
This is excellent! There are things that can stand in your way and there are practicalities that exist.
But you have to use the same creative thinking that you use in your art with your business side. It may mean not existing as an artist for primary income, but you can make it work no matter where you are. Accept and embrace the challenges, and work within them or change them all together. If you want it, you will find a way. If you don't it becomes obvious.
Don't pound square pegs in to round holes either. You have to adapt the business constantly. You can only change so much in the surrounding environment before you have to adapt yourself to survive within it. The interwebs made this part much easier by creating an avenue to easily mitigate local physical challenges.
I know so many people who could benefit from this I am going to share this with them! You find the time, money, inspiration for the “things” that you want to. If you want it badly enough you find a way! I do not make videos of my art because my priority is creating my art. Showing other people my art and selling is no longer my biggest desire, yes we all want and need affirmation, I may spend time watching videos instead of making videos and that is how I spend my “non-creative” time. I feel that it is all connected, thanks for sharing this video with everyone and I look forward to seeing what others say about it! Have a great day!

ECT) talk a walk, work on a different project (if you’re stuck on a painting, put on some music you like and just let it move you the way it wants to... there’s no right or wrong way to dance, but there’s a right and wrong way for your body so just be carful you don’t over do it)

Both of you are so incredibly supportive, warm and helpful and your advice clearly is heart felt and authentic. This particular video really spoke to me as well as the one about trying to be creative while having a day job. You talk about the things that artists often feel ashamed to talk about and it is those very things that hold us back from being fully creative and powerful. My very best wishes to you both. I've been watching a lot of your videos recently after I somehow came across your channel. I like your style and your sense of humor, especially when your partner is in the room adding her comments.
I am trying to start an art career. I am a retired (because of disability) guy in my mid fifties. I paint in the abstract expressionist style, I think....but have tons of paintings already, having been painting for around two years now. I have given many away, which is going to stop after watching that video of yours.
I am in Denver, and really have no idea where to start, so your videos are giving me all the right answers as to how to and why to, now I just need to actually go out and get my paintings into the hands of some people that might enjoy them.
Anyway, thanks for the channel, thanks for the advice, and thanks for the genuine support, it does impact me more than you realize.

Ignore the haters!!!🤩 I actually hijacked my parents house, took all their art down, put my art up, got some local beer, baked some frozen mini quiches and invited everyone I saw (that didn't give off creepy serial killer vibes) and ended up having a pretty successful little art show & gained some fans!! We have local shows but they're just too expensive for me right now, so all I had to buy was the quiche and beer😉! Gotta start somewhere!

Thanks for a great video and enjoy your trip. When I get art block, I whip out art supplies from the dollar store that I don't enjoy, like icky pastels and just play around. No expectations placed on myself, and create ugly art, then laugh at it. Another barrier I recently faced was someone saw my portrait work and wanted a portrait for the living room. Cool. Then it turned in to the person, and their daughter. Ok. Then it was the person, her daughter and two sons. Then it was the person, their daughter, two sons and her son in law. Sweat building. Then it was the person, their daughter, two sons, son in law and their dog. And hello anxiety. For some reason the person's soothing words of "think of all the exposure you'll get" (from their living room) did not help. Least I'm never alone with anxiety to keep me company lol.

I went to an exhibition once at the National Gallery of Victoria where (and sadly I don’t remember the Artist’s name as it was many years ago) the works were drawings done with a biro on crumpled paper bags. Beautifully framed I might add. But that inspired me. Use what’s lying around. And that saying; beginning is half done, is so true. Don’t wait for inspiration because sometimes it just doesn’t come. Sometimes it’s making a card for a friend, or doing voluntary art/craft work at your local Community Centre or washing the dishes or shaving - an idea 💡will pop into your head 💭and before you know it, if you act on that idea, you’re back to work.
"You're lucky. I don't get lucky like you." It GRINDS the gears of my soul whenever I hear this excuse to not do anything, let alone create artwork.

I ran an art event in my city because our old art fest got destroyed by greed and then uncerimoniously shut down. If your city is anything like mine, contact the parks and rec (or something along those lines) department at your city Hall. See what you need to do to start an event. It probably looks like a lot. But you can do it with a small team and reinvigorate your local art community!
By the way, Rafi I think that was such a lovely and romantic gesture on your part to get Klee those pliers. And that she still has them. :) Wishing you all the best with the book launch and congratulations.

Excuses has many forms, my favorite might be rationalizations. Rationalization is the spin doctor of our excuses. What's particularly difficult about the rationalizations that our excuses develop in our head is that they're legitimate. They are actually true. Our wife may really be in her eight month of pregnancy and need us by her side, it may make sense to postpone until the baby is here. The company you work for may be under a violent take over from another company and it takes up extra time or you may need to adapt to the new city that you're living in which takes up your time.
Whatever it is, here's the thing. Tolstoy had 13 kids when he wrote his all time classic 'war and peace'. Lance Armstrong won while fighting cancer, ... If the rational constructed arguments coming from our brain couldn't be beaten there would be no Mona Lisa, no Pina Bausch dance and no Matchu Pitchu...
Great book analogy.....its so like that...if you think you are writing a 'big' book you will stare at the page. If you give yourself permission to be awful you will get it written...

You are obviously coming from a place of encouragement and support for your fellow artists, and I really like how careful you are about wording your thoughts so positively~
I thought about this all week- I do agree that we human beings will often use outside conditions to justify our internal fears about rejection or an unknown outcome. ( I tell my students "can't" just means "I don't want to try" ) . On the other hand, I think you might be a little harsh about a couple of the "excuses"- only because they are sometimes legitimate reasons and not excuses. ( chronically ill kids may be the cause of literally not having time or money/opportunity to get materials, for example ) I guess it boils down to personal priorities, and whether you are talking about being an artist or creating art for a living. The modern day "Gift of Magi": pliers. So romantic! I love the list you covered... I am holding onto the 'stuck power' that keeps me in front of RUclips. I am afraid of starting on a project cause I am afraid I will not do anything but painting. I decided to paint a terracotta pot. Still festering on what to do with it. I think I need to varnish it? But maybe some paint splatter would be fun first? Love this video!

My husband and I just bought a house 2 months ago, so no art now for 4 months because of moving, home repairs, and now trying to move again because we need to move back home to take care of his dad, so we are frantically trying to get the bank to accept paperwork to do a straight trade with us for the house. All of this stress is going to make an AMAZING series of artworks when we finally get settled. But my main excuse is usually that I have a handful of chronic illnesses that cause widespread pain. When we get settled I'm going to finally channel all of my frustration with that pain into another series of artwork. Maybe I'll combine the two and name it "Absolutely Normal Chaos"?

My town has a fake arts district. All galleries (usually closed) and no support for artists (not an art shop for miles) and street fairs with low-end crafts (no shade). My dream is to take advantage of this situation, sell art, create an art supply and paint shop for myself and the artists here who so desperately need it.
I'm old and I have a full time job in front of a computer. That's why I've taken up painting.
I didn't go to art school. I'm not paying for art school to do what I do innately.
My fake excuse that I felt like I need to share with you because I felt challenged: "I got no arms to do art with." but I have arms and there are actually handicapped artists that do amazing work with their feet as hands... I have seen their stuff. IT'S REAL and it's amazing! No more excuses!
My real excuse: "I have no income. How can I afford art supplies while living off of savings? Because it takes years to become successful. I don't have that many savings."
But I will try to follow your advice. I think the biggest lie I have created for myself is that I need paint and art supplies to even do art. But creation doesn't require money. I should go gather sticks in the forest and make rope with old cloth or plant fiber from the woods to create great structures that I don't even know the meaning of.

Great video you two, I can't tell you how many excuses I have come up with in the past and have completely stalled my art career because I was trying to validate the excuse!
My chronic excuse was always, well I don't have everything I need to get started, so I will wait till I do.......... Ugh just writing it out makes me cringe!

Some art supplies are quite pricey, but I let all my friends and family know what I need or am looking for so they can keep an eye out for when it goes on sale or if they see any of it at a garage sale. Plus I get a lot of art supplies for xmas and my bday.
Another excuse... or rather why I sometimes have a creative block. I put too much pressure on myself. Just like you said.
I am like "okay, now you are gonna make a piece that you can sell and it better be good or nobody will buy it. and also it needs to be in this genre. and it has to be an original, go paint something really complicated." and that little pressure alone suffocates my creativity. I think sometimes that I should just not watch so many other artists do their thing and instead just do my own thing. Even if my own thing ain't as good, I don't have to publish or sell it right away. I should use the pen and paper that I have and go out on a walk to find inspiration. But instead I keep on collecting pictures on pinterest endlessly or I watch youtube videos endlessly. But when I look too much at other artist's work, then I want to copy them because I find their stuff so amazing I want to paint/draw like them. And then my little voice tells me "No! You need to do original art so that you can sell it!" and then I think like "but I am not good enough yet!" and this spirals in my head around and around. it is frustrating...
I should have like a secret sketchbook full of stuff where I draw and copy and don't worry about copying because I won't sell that stuff, but it'll inspire me to do my own stuff once I've started.
