    In this 2014 story, 60 Minutes goes inside the multi-billion dollar cocaine war, that stretches all the way from South America to Australia. In the past 3 years, our Federal Police have intercepted nearly two tonnes of cocaine on the lucrative Pacific route. Small yachts are loaded up with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the illegal drug on the coast of Ecuador, before making the long journey here. The innocent-looking yachties breeze into our eastern waters, mostly undetected, before offloading their cargo to local dealers. Tara Brown tracks the smugglers from South America to Vanuatu and Tonga, where a boat holding 200 kilos of cocaine and a rapidly decomposing corpse was discovered shipwrecked on a remote island reef.

      I had a friend years ago that was like 16 years old at the time that was surfing one day on a small beach not very populated in my area during the cold months and you can drive on. Huge packages of cocaine started washing up on shore and he was loading his van up but got pulled over a couple miles past the gates. He ended up on the front page of the news. About 20 years later I met the man who owned the shrimp boat the dope came off of. I was dating his nephew at the time. It was a small world back in the day growing up in a small beach town in Florida. Those were the days!!

      They'll never ever stop it unless they 100% lock down our whole society all the time, only than will it become more restricted though never eradicated, there's plenty of seeds in circulation.
      Best chance is through responsible use & education, why leave drugs exclusively for Pharma billionaire's..?

    • @jnielsen90
      @jnielsen90 11 месяцев назад +4

      @@441rider Well it's not illegal to ask Police for directions to anywhere...they don't have to provide them, but it's not illegal to ask....it's stupid, but not illegal. I live in Victoria just a ferry ride from Vancouver and I've lived here my whole life and Vancouver is no different then it always has been. It's a port that most illrgal narcotics are smuggled into Canada through so naturally it will have a higher amount of drug use and drug violence then other major cities. I still feel safer in Vancouver where less gun violence and shootings occur in a single year then it does in most American states in a single month. Even in Vancouver I have never felt the need to arm myself or have a weapon to feel safe. In any American city I can't say the same thing. So I see America as a bizarro World, not anywhere in Canada. Also our health care system recognizes addiction as a disease and not just a criminal act of being an addict and so anyone can seek medical assistance for their drug addictions without fear of ending up in a jail cell instead of a treatment facility like in the USA. Alsi our medical system must provide funding for drug rehab and addiction where as American Insurance providers can and will choose not to provide coverage for addictions.....leading to so many being incarcerated and in jail for simple possessions of drugs like the USA's jails are filled with right now. We perfer to get them help if they want it rather then stigmatize them as criminals and arrest and jail them for it

    Why don't the Australian Government just legalise, regulate and tax certain drugs and divert the money back into community health programs. Cut the criminals out of this trade and give informed adults a safe option to access recreational drugz

      That is the last thing that the cartels want. As a result, they invest large volumes of cash to ensure that it remains illegal. Everything from lobbying legislators to setting up anti-drug non profits. On this drug crazed planet black has become white and vice versa.
      Few of these drugs are actually harmful on their own, as long as you can maintain a steady and reliable supply after becoming addicted. The real harm comes from problems associated with it's legality and the stigma that goes along with being a drug addict. And of course the problems of overdosing, because you never know the actual purity or composition of what you are using. Things such as exorbitant cost and unsure supply. The effort and lengths that you have to go to hide your addiction, and the poverty that comes along with that, are the source of the majority of negative effects of the use of these substances. Things like not seeking medical help for abscessed puncture marks, living on the streets and not maintaining anything close to a regular diet are just a few of the problems that an addict encounters.

    Well, that makes it easy to make small time busts, anyway. Just look for the wealthy folks at high price clubs, because that stuff adds up to be _insanely expensive_ down under!
    Only the very rich can use it often. Hope you are looking internally for "bad actors" in police/government in 🇦🇺 . The cocaine business, with the amount of money involved, makes it more appealing than the high itself! Not like the U.S isn't a sieve - oceans, gulfs, seas, islands, harbors and thousands of miles of coastlines combine to make "drug by yacht" a problem in every coastal State (oh... and 5 great lakes, too!) Planes, trains, automobiles, boats, subs, humans... it's endless. Scary.

But we can spend more money on fighting it not just in Australia but training the drug squads in the country of origin such as columbia. As long as our government (Australia) pretend that this drug problem doesn't exist the future doesn't look good

    Great reporting ! Please do a story on why so many people want to do cocaine or any drug at this point. The last town I lived in was consumed by fentanyl and meth. There were terrible addicts of course and regular customers but it seemed like the drugs were going around in circles being resold and upsold and not consumed over and over again. The drug dealers were so getting frustrated that there were a few stories where dealers actually were bullying people to buy their product !😂
