      @@nathanscott2764 Actually it comes from the first of 3 'pilot films' (so EP -2 :-)) that shows the airplane crash and the rebuilding of Steve Austin. This film was later renamed as "The Moon and the Desert". In this pilot episode, Oscar Goldman is not already part of the show, he was introduced in the second pilot film "Wine Women and War" and is part of the third pilot "Solid God Kidnapping". Consider "Population: Zero" as EP1 :-)

    The speed editing looks real, which is amazing for the 70's. This show was light years ahead of its time!

    • @responsiblejerk2328
      @responsiblejerk2328 4 года назад +7

      They somehow avoided the Benny Hill effect of speeding up the film. I think it's only sped up about 2x, but the fence posts whizzing by in the foreground make it look like they are going 60. I would bet they also used some longer shutter speeds to add more motion blur to each frame so it would look more natural sped up.

    • @seansands424
      @seansands424 4 года назад +1

      @@responsiblejerk2328 You can still see the loop if you look at the back ground

    • @JediWitness2
      @JediWitness2 4 года назад +3

      @@responsiblejerk2328 Actually in the original clip here is running just about that fast. Lee Majors was a very good sprinter and he's running about fifteen mph in this clip with the background going by at about 60 of course.
      But they could have at LEAST shown him running at twice the normal speed in the show without the Benny Hill effect as you mentioned.
      I recently watched some episodes of The Greatest American Hero and one of his many powers was super speed and they would always show him running about forty or fifty mph and it never looked fake at all. They only showed it for a second or maybe two but it never looked silly or fake as far as his movement went and they're was no photo realistic CGI then since it was only 1980. They were still using the same camera tricks as in this show.
      The slow motion got so annoying all the time in this show which is why this clip is so awesome. I just wish they did it even 2x normal speed to show you something instead of the slomo.
      What really surprises me is that even in the movie Civil War during the highway scene when cap and Bucky and black panther were all running they had them do it exactly the way this scene was done with them running at a normal speed and actually kind of sliding along the ground but in actuality this scene here in six million Dollar Man looked far more realistic. I don't understand why they didn't just use the CGI they have access to now and show their legs moving at like twice the speed of that of Usain bolt and it would have looked perfectly fine and 100% believable with today's technology.

    • @responsiblejerk2328
      @responsiblejerk2328 4 года назад +1

      @@JediWitness2 I believe for Civil War they used a rig to capture that at more or less normal speed. They drag a big carpet that the actors run on and it multiplies their speed. Like the moving sidewalks at the airport. I know that rig exists anyway.

    • @apollo-so5yj
      @apollo-so5yj 3 года назад +1

      @@JediWitness2 I agree with you, it would have been nice to see more of this sort of 2x speed with the camera/shutter effects as we see in this clip.
      As a child, I remember and will never forget the realism of this clip in the opening intro. This is a key part of what made this show so amazing at the time. Even to this day, this scene looks very real and makes very evident the power of the bionic legs.

    Lee Majors was arguably the best runner I can imagine for this role. He was a mixed of power, control and utmost precision as a runner. He had a great physical condition and that macho 70's look added to all that. He was a extremely elegant runner, can't think of an actor who can be compared to him. Maybe in the future robotics will help human beings to be able to run 65 mph.✌

      Big subject, but they only had real instruments and orchestras, and each composer had almost nothing to reference, so they simply created whatever came out of their own imagination, and nothing was to be accepted or popular.
      Oliver Nelson, was cool, jazzy, and funky, and of his time. As a synth nerd myself, I can tell you that those early synths were used to transform the background music, especially of robots beeping and computerised equipment.
      Oh it's a huge subject, but it's all about using what they had to sound different. go listen to the Persuaders theme, and the mix of traditional instruments, mixed with synths.

      Yeah, that was the big letdown of the show. You *needed* to see it this way. But minor footnote: that's not high speed - not much. That's close to real time (20-25, not 60). It's amazing to see it (and feels amazing). I've frequently broken out in runs when I'm walking; and on a few occasions when I got up to that cadence I was completely taken by surprise to hear girls on a balcony of one of the duplex houses screaming and cheering in delight; or another case at night, when I broke out in full speed, there was a group of students hanging outside near the dorms who went into cheering and applause mode with the "go! go! go!". I thought was alone and that nobody could see it at night.

    I still chuckle at the Family Guy parody of this bit. They said, we can rebuild him, we have the technology, but we don't want to spend a lot of money. And Peter is running in the red jumpsuit with a garbage can for a leg and a plunger for an eye. Still this was my favorite show as a kid I just loved it. I met Oscar Goldman once in a mall, he was in his 90's at the time, but it was way cool. That guy did a bunch of tv, that show was just one gig in hundreds.

    I loved The Six Million Dollar Man, Lee Majors was the man every kid wanted to be. I wonder if they'll ever remake it? I'd quite like to see what a modern version would be like.

    • @JediWitness2

      They did remake The Bionic Woman in 2008.. But it was done terribly and with a couple of brief exceptions, the special effects from the original 70s show was even better than the 2008 show.
      There were rumors in 2010 or so that they were going to do a reboot of the show called "The Six BILLION dollar" Man with Mark Walberg.. But apparently it never went anywhere

    There can be movie adaption but it wouldn’t have the magic that Lee Majors brought to the character. The fact that some of the episodes were horror, made the show that much more awesome.

    How could his heart cope? They didn't replace that. Or was he just a passenger sitting on top of his legs?

    • @JediWitness2
      @JediWitness2 2 года назад

      More the latter.. Yes. He move his limbs the same way you would move your organic limbs. It's more about moving them with thought in your mind because he doesn't actually feel normal sensations life a flesh and blood limb though he does have basic sensation in his arm and legs. He just doesn't feel pain or hot and cold if I recall.
      Years ago some other commenters said that they remember Steve saying he could hit 60 without breathing hard, but apparently 60 is not his top speed which was something closer to 67 mph. Since he is moving his left arm which is of course a real normal arm perhaps the mental strain of running faster than 60 along with that of his other arm does cause him to be somewhat winded when he goes full speed but it still only a fraction of what it would be if you were flesh and blood.
